SoundMAGIC HP100 Headphones ~$184 shipped; HRT microStreamer Amp/DAC ~$171

50

The HP100 have a bit of a cult following on Head-Fi, and are one of better rated sub-$300 headphones on the market. Typical price in Australia is ~$250 shipped, but Massdrop (registration required) has an unlocked group buy deal for US$149.99 + $16.21 shipping to Australia (~A$184 shipped).

Also of interest to audiophiles-on-a-budget is the HRT microStreamer Amp/DAC for ~$171 shipped, which is a very highly rated portable USB Amp/DAC — many rate it ahead of the similar, but significantly more expensive AudioQuest DragonFly and Meridian Explorer. Typical price in Australia is ~$220 shipped.

  • I'm a newbie to audio but I've been reading about my Sony XBA-4 that I recently received. Would appreciate if anyone could confirm my thoughts?

People say that the XBA-4 work well with a low impedance source. If I'm reading this correctly the Microstreamer has a low impedance of 0.5 ohm. Can I assume then that this should work well with the XBA-4?

Secondly, the Microstreamer would appear to work with Samsung devices, so I'm assuming it will work with S3 4G?

I picked up the XBA-4 from the same deal as you; I think they benefit greatly from a good source and amp. :)

The microStreamer should work well. (Comment on Head-Fi about using it with the XBA-3: "Used my XBA-3s with the Microstreamer today. The XBA-3 has a variable impedance curve and can sound unpleasant (i.e. metallic treble) on an amp with higher output impedance. With the very low impedance of the MS, the XBA-3 had nicely controlled bass with a non-metallicy, detailed treble.")

Also shouldn't be a problem using it with the S3. Says on CNET (http://news.cnet.com/8301-13645_3-57570860-47/a-budget-price…): "HRT also claims that the MicroStreamer can be used as a USB DAC with Samsung Galaxy S3 (and the upcoming S4) over its MHL connector (contact HRT about the details of that setup)."

Cheers thanks for the research. Looks like the Microstreamer deal has gone through, so looking forward to receiving it and giving it a whirl!

  • I can't view the page on the massdrop.com site without creating an account first? If so I'll give that site a miss.

Your loss, they have some pretty good deals sometimes.

    • I mentioned that registration was required in the post; it's certainly annoying, but I guess that's the nature of the beast. Massdrop is one of the very few overseas group buy sites that ship to Australia (with reasonable shipping rates) and there can be some pretty good deals considering the mark ups we typically have to deal with here. :)

  • Finally received my Microstreamer last week. It's an awesome bit of kit, and is working wonderfully with my S3 and XBA-4 =)
