Damn. Bought from megabuy and they charged the same price plus $8ish shipping. And that was for pre order… should have waited for this one!! :((
This is for the 120gb btw

  • I'm gonna have to say damn too, I bought the 250 SSD recently for about 50 more…

    • +2

For $50 more, why not get the 840 Pro instead? :)

  • Megapay..:(

  • Anyone have some good info on the differences between the 840, 840 pro and the 840 EVO?

Seems to be some conflicting info on google.

840 EVO is essential the same to regular 840, but deliver slightly faster speed to both Read/Write

The bad is the EVO still using TLC rather than MLC

        • +1

At this (starting) price range, they have to use TLC.
I'm skeptical that TLC masqueraded as SLC cache will effectively improve endurance.
As always, you get what you pay for.

        • Anadtech seems to have no problem with it using TLC, though I get what you mean

        • Was it meant to improve endurance?

I thought it was there to improve write speeds.

        • +3

Anadtech seems to have no problem with it using TLC

That's because they're using new drives.

Commentators say that a SSD with cells having 1000 (most likely for TLC) or 3000 (Samsung quoted) write endurance with an efficient wear-leveling algorithm (like writing to least written-to cells) can be practically indefinite… But this assumes an empty disk. However, the more of the disk's storage is permanently filled (OS, applications, data for applications), less cells are available for wear-leveling.

It's reasonable for average person to imagine that leaving 25GB free on SSD is fine but that isn't sufficient space for wear-leveling if there's going to be things like file versioning, Windows search, virtual memory, hibernation storage, Windows Media Centre (buffering whilst watching Live TV), etc, writing in the background.

In summary, TLC is a bad idea if you want to keep your SSD writeable in the long-term (akin to logic that its better to buy multiple crappy shoes instead of one good pair). At the very least, buy twice the capacity you think you want.

        • Dont know if you can still get volleys, but when i was a kid i had a pair which lasted forever!

  • As far as I know the evo is similar in price to the original but has around 500mb write speeds, which is coming close to the pro. The pro is more expensive but includes 5 years warranty and not 3. I was about to buy the original but this is almost the same price hence I chose the evo.

    • +1

Cheers. I currently have the 840 Pro and am happy with it. EVO looks like a good improvement over the old 840.

  • +3

anyone know how the samsung 840 evo compares to the sandisk extreme (the old sandisk extreme I not the extreme II)

    http://www.shoppingexpress.com.au/buy/sandisk-extreme-ssd-12…

I cannot find much on the internet because the sandisk extreme is older… but from what i can tell from the manufacturer specs the sandisk extreme has faster sequential read and write speeds… while the samsung 840 has better random read and write speeds… i do not know what that means in real world usage for a typical user though and which one is preferred? anyhelp would be appreciated.

edit: nevermind - found this, it helps for anyone interested…

I was so close to buying through MegaBuy last night, and didn't. I was confident ShoppingExpress would come out with a good deal … and here it is!! You do good work SE, I like it. MegaBuy's shipping cost, plus the 2.5% extra charge for paypal and credit cards were enough to make me think twice.

Rep, I've got a comment and a request:

Two 250GB drives are cheaper than one 500GB drive. (2 x $189 = $378 vs $389) Usually it's cheaper to go for the bigger capacity. Any chance of the 500GB being sold for less than $378? Seems like $369 would be the logical number in the progression of prices: $189 for 250GB, for another 250GB of capacity add slightly less (already has the controller etc, just needs more flash), so add $180, and you get $369. Please! :-)

Maybe the 250GB size is most popular and gets the biggest discount? It just seems like the 500GB is unjustifiably more per GB than the 250GB.

    • +1

      Hi Iceman,

I love your explanation over there :) - however, base on the cost, the 500GB gotta stay at $389 delivered.

Forgot to write back and thank you for your reply. It's a shame the 500GB won't go any lower, so I think I'll stick with the 250GB. Edit: have now ordered it!

For those who asking EVO vs PRO. Here's the best answer I would give.

    MLC (Pro) vs TLC (Evo)

    • The PRO uses MLC which will hold your data for 70 years for 250gb version or 35 years for 120gb version, data integrity tests have proved this. Reference
    • The EVO model uses Samsung's proprietary hardware TLC, which gives you data integrity for approx 23 years for 250gb version or 11.5 years for 120gb version. Reference same as above
    • Usually the difference is irrelevant as most of us don't really store our data for more than 5 years.

    20% different write/read speed

    • Another difference between the EVO & Pro series is read/write speeds.
    • The Pro is about 20% faster than the EVO, both on read & write speeds.
    • Again, the difference of that 20% usually is irrelevant unless you're to do benchmarking for your systems, or you really need those read/write speed.
    • Comparison of read/write speed

3 years (Evo) vs 5 years (Pro) warranty

    • Evo has 3 years warranty
    • Pro has 5 years warranty

    Price difference

    • From your comparison linked, I thought this was also relevant:

"The Evo is remarkable in that, like the Sandisk Extreme II, it features a second level cache. For the 250 GB Evo this comprises of a 3 GB Turbowrite cache (TWC) which is a block of high speed Flash Memory. When the TWC is exhausted write speeds drop by approximately 50% but that won't often happen under typical consumer workloads."

Purchased :D Have been research good SSD for months, and this one seem good choice. The PRO version currently around 250$, which is about 20% more expensive than this one. For me that the performance not really worth that 20% extra cash. 189$ is really out of my budget, but this upgrade will boost my macbook pro dramatically. All we need originally is the SSD's speed, not the 20% extra from the PRO.

At this time, where the ram price is too expensive, upgrade to SSD seem the best option. That's why my macbook still 4gb ram though hahaa :))

I must said that the 840 250GB (not Pro) is performing rather well on my old core i5 2nd gen Windows 8 notebook. hdd score under windows reach 8.1.

my config is to slot a 1TB 5400 hard drive into the ODD bay and use that as secondary software and download drive while 250GB use for OS and key software only.

6th month into its usage with 0.77 TB data written, it still performs rather well. only abut 1/3 of the drive was filled, if drive is trimmed and optimised well, it should retain its performance for some time to come.

Samsungs power consumption beats all its rivals, hence for notebooks that has a battery life concern, it is almost the best bang for $ while on desktop with a 400W power supply, other brands would do just well regardless.

I look forward for the EVO to drop its price further down the track. Since hard drives are a consumable item, normal disk spin drives has an expected life span of roughly 3 years, hence it is recommended to clone or redeploy on a brand new drive every 2 years. IF SSDs can last just as long, then the investment is affordable as 2 years later the newer gen tech and prices would give better size and performance already. THe benefit of the SSD over HDD is amazing.

My experiences with SSD so far is that a SSD + HDD config, 64 GB would be stretching it but 12X GB is enough as the OS drive alone. My recently developed gaming desktop has 120GB Kingston and some older gen 64GB SSDs, it performs exceptionally on par with the Samsung for win 8 boot up.

I can safely conclude Windows 8 /8.1 is better than windows 7 on performance when comes to running them on a SSD. Win 8 is highly recommended over win 7 (provided you know how to make peace with desktop mode and modern mode).

  • Didn't even think how to mount it, any chance of adding one of those brackets to my order before it ships? Would it still be free shipping? Order no. N00127294.

    Thanks rep.

  • Normal price $200.50 after special $189, seems not much different though.

Rep, can you do better price on Samsung SSD PRO 840 Series 256GB?
    Cheers.

    • the 17X - 18X price mark for 250 is the entry level market current price medium

The expected street prices are at this stage:
      12XG 9X - 11X
      25XG 17X - 19X

the pro level version with 5 year warranty are 23X - 26X for 25X GB

P.S. Do PM me if you need help as our support team got a bit overwhelmed with the recent surge of email and orders this week.
