Yeap, not sure why on earth OP would think this is a deal.

      eBay is heaps cheaper.

      • +10

Perhaps because it has warranty, it doesn't ship from Hong Kong so he can have it now, dont have to pay with paypal and has the 9v battery included. Sure it is $8 more but there are some positives about buying it locally. It also does seem to be a slightly different model.

Because firstly it is probably better quality than the ebay ones, despite looking the same. Secondly it isn't everyones hobby to scour pages day in day out looking for bargains and to be an expert on bargain hunting. It has 50% off, to me it looked like a bargain as well and I think some credit should go to the poster for putting in the effort at least to try and point out something useful

        • +6

Thats why ozbargain is here - save us all scouring.
a neg means there is a better price out there or the store is dodgy, it is not a reflection on the original poster, just the price. Supercheap does NOT specialise in quality - they are super cheap.
Why neg somebody saving you the scouring and giving you a better price? you can buy the battery for $2.

        • +3

That's a good point, i didn't know that about super cheap autos and would have assumed them to be of a decent standard.

But it isn't so much the fact of a negative vote that concerned me, more the fact of trying to ridicule someone who is trying to contribute to this community. To me this site should be more about working together rather than trying to out do each other.

Statements like 'why on earth op would think this is a deal' aren't really helpful and attracted negs for a reason.

A Chinese website is not a valid comparison.

Likewise comparing a price to a price from an overseas location, is good to point out, BUT not appropriate for a negative vote.

        • +2

why? same place supercheap gets them. It isnt valid because we sidestep the middleman?
or because you love to have a go at me at every chance - its not like you to miss a chance to neg a deal.

      • also just notices it is a much better 12:1 rather than 8:1 spot ratio (ie the area measured is 1/12th of the distance rather than 1/8th, so you get a much more accurate reading because you are reading a spot less than half the size)

If you don't mind me asking, Please state where tmart is located? And should the thing have issues who pays for postage to return it? Whats the wait time on that? Sure they say 'warranty' but its based overseas and it WILL be a headache. I purchased one via ebay and it failed on me after 7months. It wasn't worth the headache or the money to send it back. At least this way we are supporting a business within Australia which is giving jobs to locals here. Im all for ebay and overseas buying, but even if you do as you said above and buy your battery for $2, warranty will be an issue as it needs to be sent back and I bet it will be at your cost. For an extra $6 its local and best for those who WANT to deal with local sellers.

That one on eBay is fine if you want wait 2-3 weeks to get it but if you need it right away ops is a good deal and you can return it to the store if it's not working.

    • +2

That's not the point here. At double the price.. and also the highly inflated "original price" just makes this closer to a scam than a deal.

      • +1

Check your maths… $12 vs $20 and has some different specs so may not be same model.

    • +3

Mine came in 2 weeks from China and has been used 5-6 times a week for the past year and has not missed a beat, kids use it all the time.. cats seem to like chasing lasers..

      • +1

I bought one for checking the temperature of ICs, but I must confess it too has been used for cats more than ICs.

    • that one on ebay is always listed at that price, you can order it anytime. if time mystically becomes a huge issue to you just at this moment, you certainly need to learn to do some planning.

    $20 is a good deal.

    Considering the following cost $2999!!
    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/UNI-T-UTi160A-IR-Infrared-Thermal…

    But..
    OP's $20 deal - shows temperature of 1 point, $20 / 1 = $20 per point
    $2999 Infrared Thermal Imaging camera - shows temperature of 160x120=19200 points, $2999 / 19200 =15.6c per point

You have compared Dog shit with Cat shit - Not the same.
A full FLIR camera is not the same as a IR spot temperature measurement tool.

The problem with the good internet sites like ozbargain was 3 years ago is they become shit when everyone learns about them.

Opinions are like assholes - everyone has one.

      • -1

Someones a butthurt that now other people can buy stuff they usually can't afford.

    • +2

teaBagger is 100% correct. Dog shit and cat shit is not the same.
I've asked all my friends and they agree they have never seen their dogs unleash a cat shit.

      • My Dog ate a cat and then crapped it out. Does that count?

Ill probably go get one of these It's a bargain even if not the cheapest, its different and local.

For that reason OZbargain is doing it's job and you "purist" nerds should pull your heads in a li'l bit.

    • facepalm

      That's a goddamned FLIR camera (Forward-Looking Infrared), not a thermometer. That's practically military-grade hardware.

Just because the word "infrared" is featured in the description of both products that doesn't make them the same.

My TV remote operates on infrared light too. I'll sell it to you for $1,500. Bargain.

Im a fan of buying from overseas via ebay, and purchased a lookalike exactly like this. Sure its cheaper but unfortantly mine failed after 7months. Really these things dont or shouldnt fail but i guess i was unlucky. I say for an extra $8 your getting the battery and warranty via a local australian buisness. Anything goes wrong and they sort it out.

    • Sadly my experience of Australian businesses 'sorting it out' when things go wrong is generally pitiful with one or two exceptions…

      • But atleast you can take it up with Fair Trading in worst case. Rare to do with stores like this but if need be, fair trading can come in handy.

  • No stock at North Parramatta in Sydney as at 10:00 am Monday

    Just grabbed one today.

I have to say for 20 bucks, these things are not too shabby at all. Rubberised grip coating, lightweight, very easy-to-read back-lit LCD display (you can turn the back-light off to save power), battery indicator on the LCD, measures in Centigrade and Fahrenheit, temperature range from -50C to 380C, you can even turn the laser off and it'll still measure in the direction you point it (obviously it's just harder to be accurate).

It also saves the last measurement you took until you depress the trigger for a certain amount of time to begin measuring again.

I tested it out on a number of household surfaces (especially areas where I could independently verify the temperature with other thermostats) and the thing is pretty damn accurate all the way to about 10 metres or so.
