  • So your paying around $40 for WD's "smart"ware?

I purchased a couple of these a while ago when Harvey Norman had them at $138. Within about 2 weeks one of the controllers died and about a month after that the harddrive in the other unit died. After the second one died I just asked for a refund instead of a replacement and bought an equivalent Seagate. The replacement unit hasn't died yet, but I am not keeping anything important on it.

Not going to neg the deal, but letting others know about quality issues I've had.

    • Thanks for letting us know,i love WD and hate Seagates, however 2TB drives that is. From what i've read something doesn't feel right with these 3TB drives, will skip this step in evolution i guess.

      • Whilst no manufacturer will ever confirm, common consensus is that external HDDs are binned parts [ie. not able to qualify (performance/endurance) for sale as standalone HDDs] hence no surprises about failure if in constant use - they're not sold for that.

I think the problem is the handling of these external hard drive. You must not move the HD when you are using it. I see a lot of people re-positioning the HD while it is being used. I have never done that and never had a failure in the all my external HD (various brands) bought within 6 years.

  • I've got more than enough HDDs, but I just wanted to say I've been using many WD Elements and these WD My Book 3TB drives without issues on a single one.

  • I got 4 external drives…. a seagate and 3 WD's.

I can hear the seagate clicking away in the other room!

Havent had an issue with reliability on any of them, but I do favour the WD's for sure. Each to their own…. just like Ford and Holden, you'll get fanboi's on both sides.

But I'm definitely a WDboi… HP Proliant server is busting at the seams with 4 WD Red's happily spinning away inside 24/7, and have never had an issue.
