  • I guess its a fair deal, Kogan are about the same delivered, HN/ JB only $150 more, I'm sure you could use either sites to match.

  • its actually a great deal because kogan is a grey importer which means no local warranty, compared to purchasing from (online version)bricks-&-mortar store.

I'd say Canon 60D from JB for ~$748 two weeks ago was a better deal
They even had 15% off that price
older model but it was a higher grade camera

  • Get any body only and one good zoom lens. (You will eventually anyway.) An 18-200 lens will almost do the same thing without swapping lenses every two seconds.

    • +1

superzooms like 18-200 hardly ever deliver good results.
better option is something like 18-105 or 16-70 lenses, or similar.
      imho.

The Grey's online deal for the Sony a57 is still active, twin lens kit 45% off for $650 + free ship and 12 month sony warranty http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/111733
Google 700d vs a57 , it's a great camera, I got mine on monday and so far I'm very impressed.

Cheaper at RYDA as stated above.

$898.95 with free shipping. Use the code RYDAMX

  • Canon 700D or Nikon D5200?
Mixed reviews with some favouring canon and some nikon.. Confused..
I quite like the idea of a touch screen on the canon making it easier and quicker to focus.
    Any comments?

    • touch screen is a good thing to have (as on my canon eos m), but i wouldn't say it is a critical feature for focusing. it is much quicker to have a focusing zone in the centre and utilise focus-and-recompose technique.

Canon 700D or Nikon D5200? i think deal on Canon 60D with 15% off was the best one (see above), but i reckon it is over.

    • +1

      According to http://snapsort.com ratings - Nikon 5200 (85) > Sony A57 (68) > Canon 700D (50)
but why pay $900 for the Canon when you can get the Sony A57 twin lens kit on special for $650!!!

      • Excellent price on a Sony camera (i do not know much about this particular one but I assume it is a good DSLR camera). The only issue is that once you get a DSLR body you're locked to a particlar lens mount. Sony has a few good lenses (of the top of my head, one of them is 16-50 2.8).
But Sony lenses can be a bit pricy, compared to Canon ones, which can be found on sale more often.

        • The Sony has plenty of good lenses in their G and Carl Zeiss series. Their prices are quite in line or cheaper then Canon/Nikon that has IS. Remember Sony has in-body image stablisation so no need to buy expensive lenses to get IS.

I have the A57, it is a kickass camera for the price. Does 10fps which is excellent for sports photography and image quality is on par with the larger full frame cameras like the 5D M3 at base ISOs (100-800 ISO)

        • i would not argue about it.
i've got an rx100 as a second camera for two months by now - no major issues so far.
sony A cameras look pretty good to me, but for the next few years I am locked to Pentax mount as I inveted some money into good quality lens.

        • Pentax makes very good cameras too, I got no doubt. Only problem is they don't make any full frame DSLRs so no upgrade path if you need to go full frame.

        • i am happy with APS-C sensor (for quite a while by now), no plans to upgrade my gear to full frame. so it is not a problems for me.
Pentax gear has its own disadvantages, as any other brand.

    • Thanks guys!!
But I've always found Sony after sales service pretty bad.. If its in warranty - you have to wait a long time for the parts to come and if its out of waranty - the parts and labour are so expensive that its better to buy a new one.
At $650 for a twin lens kit, its cheaper than 700d and d5200 and the quality seems to be at par with them as well..

      • i can be wrong but if yor camera got faulty after the warranty period, it is just easier to get a new one.
get extended warranty like 3 years or so, and you're gonna be fine.
actually if your gear did not break down within first 3…6 months of reasonably extensive usage, most likely it will work properly for at least next 5…6 years.
