Best Credit card for annual expenditure of $14K

Hi Guys !

I would be starting my post grad degree soon and need to pay the fees for the course. The total annual fees would be approx $14K or so. Fortunately the Uni accepts credit card payments for Mastercard and Visa. Amex is not accepted. I was looking forward to take advantage of this option and pay the fees through a CC.

Looking to get a CC which has good rewards and Qantas FF program would be a sweetener. I already have Amex ( No annual fees) and Bankwest Zero MC ( no annual fees). Bankwest card has no rewards program as its fees free.

Any suggestions !!

Thanks for your help !

  • Hi ozshaz, try entering your expected annual spend into the calculator on the Credit Card Comparison section of our site (Rewards Compared ) and it will give you an indication on what sort of pay back you can expect from each of the cards.

Let us know how you go or if you have any questions.

  • Consider also paying on one card, then doing a balance transfer to a 0% for six months card and banking the $14k in a high interest account till the 6 months is up.

  • $1:1QFF point ratio:
    Woolworths Everyday Rewards Qantas Mastercard
    Jetstar Platinum Visa
    HSBC Platinum Qantas Visa

The usual ANZ/Bankwest/NAB/Westpac etc. Qantas cards (usually <1:1 conversion rate)

And don't forget 28 Degrees Mastercard (No rewards, but compulsory for OzBargain membership)

  • Thanks Guys ! Forgot to mention that I already have 28degrees MC :-)

I am bit reluctant to use the balance transfer thing coz it may impact the credit rating for having too many CC..that's just my opinion..

  • I am a frequent traveller, so I like a cc with free travel insurance. Also I sometimes fly Emirates so their rewards are handy to have (I only use them for upgrades as fees too high on redemption booking). And I like a bit of luxury at a bargain price. So for me the Citibank Emirates credit card suits. 1. $249 annual fee.
    2. Up to 55? days interest free. (I always pay off within this period, but if you do not, then compare interest rates before selecting cards too)
    3. Free travel insurance (Annual travel Insurance for a frequent traveller can be $250 - $350 from travel Insurance co.s).
    4. 1.5 ff mile for $1 spend (spend anywhere anything)
    5. 2 Lounge passes Sydney Emirates Lounge per year.
    6. Free Limo from home to Sydney Airport and back again once per year.
    7. Often have offers like Hypothetically 15,000 mile to join and 15,000 for spending $??? within ??? months (check web sites/google search).
    8. Probably same deal for other Aust Cities that Emirates fly from.
It was a pain to set up though. That was a few years ago. Hopefully Citibank have improved by now. Emirates have very good telephone customer service though.

  • Does the uni accept postbillpay? It may be possible to use Amex linked with paypal in that case.
