Buying a Rolex - help!

Hi everyone, long time reader, first time poster, please do not crucify me if I haven't followed proper OzBargain etiquette.

Looking at buying a mens Rolex and need some help and advice.

  1. Can an authorised dealer (AD) discount a Rolex watch? I have been to 2 ADs, and both stated that Rolex sets the prices and they can't discount them. Is this true? They also informed me that any other brand in store they can discount, but Rolex prices are final unless it is a model they are trying to get rid of.

  2. In terms of Rolex demand and resale value how do steel, steel and gold, gold and diamonds variants weigh up?

  3. Those who have purchased a Rolex watch, have you been satisfied with your purchase? Would you purchase the Rolex again or a different brand?

  4. The watch I am interested in is the Datejust II…any comments about this particular model?

Thank you in advance to anyone that replies!

You should open up a second site Scotty; "OzLuxury"

  • Never bought a Rolex but I have a few Swiss watches including Omegas and several other Swatch brands. Australian ADs might not discount but overseas ADs do. For what you would save on a Rolex, take your significant other on a surprise long weekend to Hong Kong or even better LA/Vegas and come back wearing a new Rolex. Savings on the Rolex would pay for the trip!

In general Rolex sport watches (Daytona, Submariner, Sea Dweller, GMT Master, Explorer etc)seem to hold their value better than Datejusts and Presidents. Stainless Steel seems to hold its value better. If you want to see what 2nd hand prices look like have a search on www.watchrecon.com no shortage of 2nd hand ones for sale.

  • But if over $900 value, got to pay tax and duty with customs.

Unless of course you post the box and papers back to your house in the mail and wear the watch on your wrist. Also it is >$1K for declaration and duty. Depending on where you buy it from you might be able to avoid tax overseas (for example UK/europe save 20% VAT). Consider that, even if you declare the watch and pay duty, you'll still probably be a fair way in front!

    • Yep, I've done this quite a few times and no problems.

    • That is incredibly smart!

  • you can get discount 10%
