I bought this camera 2 months ago for $407 at Bing Lee. It is super zoom camera I ever seen. Best for bird photography.

  • Sorry for negative vote. My smartphone is way to small for thumb.

or is it that your thumb is too big for the smartphone?

That's issue is what my gf love.

  • I've been tossing up between this (for the zoom) and the Sony A57 for the past couple of weeks. Ordered the A57 from Graysonline just this morning. Thanks to LaTerrible for the awesome price on that. :)

    • The A57 is an awesome camera for the price. It's one kick ass camera in terms of specs, price and image quality. Great purchase.

  • Looks to be online only. Not available for pick-up in any of the stores I've tried.

    • Was only available in 4 or 5 stores in Brisbane for pick up, But went to Loganholme store and they ordering it in for me, Just had to pay 10% deposit

  • This looks like the kind of thing I'm after but would like advise from someone who knows cameras.

I'd like something that will take good stable shots of friends and family inside and outside (without zoom) and occasionally take some scenery shots using the zoom. I like the idea of this being relatively compact, and wont have to carry around different lenses.

    Is this my best option?

Does anyone know the positives/negatives of this camera? I'm just looking through some reviews now, but it's not too easy to understand.

    Thanks in advance.

      • Thank you so much for that link, I'm still struggling with some of the terminology. Is there much competition at this price?

        It looks good to me!

Think these are the 3 main choices in Super Zooms

        • Thanks mate for all that. I went ahead and bought one!

        • Is there much competition at this price?

None at all. 3 or 4 days ago when I was looking, Kogan's price was the absolute cheapest at $378 plus shipping. I have no idea how much that would be, as their servers were down just now when I tried to check it. They are grey importers, so no manufacturers warranty and the site stated that shipping would be 2 to 3 weeks.

Best Australian price I found with manufacturers warranty at the time was at Ryda for $439 including their $10 shipping.

JB Bifi $458 then Hardly Normal $477

        • It's not mentioned on the web page, but in the catalogue it's stated that it comes with a Canon Care Pack. Read up on this for yourself, but what it appears to be is an extra 2 years extended warranty, and normally sells for $59. Although many here probably wouldn't buy it for this price, it's free with this offer, and ensures 3 years of hassle-free replacement if anything goes wrong. It must be registered within 14 days of purchase.

I'll be interested to see if this is sent with the online purchases.

    • eddiecox,
As an all-in-one camera, it's hard to go past superzooms.

However, most are not ideal for inside shots in low light without flash, for instance. Just like many other cameras with small sensors aren't the best if you want absolute quality in the extremes. Same with most phones. They are often noisy and pics become more indistinct without decent light. With flash they are often far better. Focusing may not be the best in low light either, with this camera.

But if you are coming from a phone and want to improve your pics, I doubt you'd be disappointed. Most phones don't have a xenon flash, but an LED flash. LED flashes often don't freeze low-light action properly. Most phones don't have half-decent optical (lens) zoom, let alone the huge 50x zoom seen here. Lots of fun to be had.

However, in this price range you can buy a somewhat larger or similar-sized camera with far less zoom than this has, but that can get you better night shots with far less noise, especially without using the flash. So if that's the main use (and not the extreme zoom), then there are better choices.

But I see you've bought one, so I hope you are happy with it.

      • Thanks for all that, I've come from using phones & basic digital camera. I'm not into photography exactly, just want better snaps, this seems like a logical step up for me

Thanks for the advice everyone who did, I'll have a play around with it today when I go for it

  • wait for the Panasonic FZ70 with 20-1200mm F2.8-5.9 zoom? With the Panasonic 1.7X TC that's 2040mm, pretty crazy.

    Pre-order USD399 on Amazon.

  • FFS, I've been looking at this camera for the past month now, the lowest price I could get within an Australian bought walk in store was about $450, anything cheaper would have to be bought online/overseas. For $400 its the best I've seen it.

The camera itself, wow, I've been amazed by what common folk like you and me have shot standing on the ground or above a tall building and taking amazing shots and the best part I think and the reason I want to get it because of the video footage it shoots. The image stabilizer seems a real treat and works very very well at the full 50x optical.

Just utube sx50, there's even a zooming in of Jupiter and some of his moons. You can also purchase a 2 pack battery with charger(although EU plug, you would have to do a little research) from overseas stores for less than 40 bucks!!!

I am not an expert, but I think, just from what I have seen, this camera is better than ALL the video cameras on the market at this price range. Getting the extra batteries would complete the package, just search NB-10L(Battery) for SX50. Now folk will say that it voids warranty and such which is fine, do your own research, the reviews seem favorable.

I have to miss this deal, just do not have the funds this month, but the camera is of high priority for me. That super zoom is just the clincher for me and the image stabilizing test on utube proves its superiority, in my mind.

Do I sound like a shill? lol, anyway, my fellow peasants! we can see Jupiter's moons with this thing! ututbe it!

  • I have an SX40HS I am looking to to sell.

I gave it too my wife as a present 12 months ago because of the incredible zoom this thing has. She took about 80 photos with it at picnics and parties. We mainly go to the beach and she really wanted a waterproof camera, so the SX40 just sits in the cupboard now.

I would sell it for $200.00 plus shipping if any OzB'er is interested.

I am in Brisbane on the North side.

The camera is as-new, is in pristine condition, and is still in all of the original packing and box.
