  • no stock?

    • Not surprising.

    • Got this from Seven Hills had at least 4 in stock

    • There may well be, no way to check online for low stock items any more though :(

    It says:
    "Availability: Temporarily out of stock"

Pardon my ignorance on DS' new system, but is it possible shops still have stock even if it says online there is none? Should this be posted if it explicitly says there is no stock? I'm inclined to "out of stock" this, except the OP says there were 4 in one store.

    • Its only out of stock online. Could be any number on their system, but we can no longer search stores unless item is listed for Click and Collect. Ring a store to check if any in stores near you. (I got 1 of the last 2 $13 Sangean DAB+ in Brissie - in the last days of the old stock search.)

There were a lot of complaints about limited stock deals with old stock system. We could track down great limited stock deals, but those who missed out wanted DS banned. By the end of last month, new DS owners sent store managers Quit Stock lists to clear remaining limited & discontinued stock from the shelves (eg 8pack AA glitter Eneloops for $12). So those complaining have got pretty well what they wanted - very few limited stock deals like this.

      • Multiple uses for the word "We", are you a rep Bruce?

I think the frustration was the Store stock levels were inaccurate (whether intentionally or not).
More importantly when people did buy online stock, their order was processed, money often taken, only to find out a few days later that the order was magically cancelled.

Stock inventory (especially for online sales) is pretty simple & automated these days.

        • Kind of inclined to agree with supabrudda. And if now you can't even get any indication of the deal being available without having to make multiple phone call then I think in-store DS posts become a waste of space.

        • are you a rep Bruce?

NO! Just stating We (referring to us - OBers) can't search.
What is your suggested collective term?
Am another customer (with good relations with DS managers over decades - giving me access to inside info).

I have been waiting for an order for over a month. No response throught 'contact us' on DS site - many messages left. Used FaceBook after an OBer said had better results. DS got back within a few hours, & said they had put my funds back into my account. As I pointed out I paid with Gift Cards (5% off), so what account? Now waiting for promised Gift Card "in the mail".

Stock inventory may be "pretty simple & automated", but has been out of whack in many stores for over a decade!

        • if now you can't even get any indication of the deal being available without having to make multiple phone call

Let staff do a search for you - in 1 call, as I suggested… Ring a store to check if any in stores near you

        • Stock inventory (especially for online sales) is pretty simple & automated these days.

          Nice in theory!
There is not a problem with the inventory system, just its accuracy. We agree on that.
It was usually most inaccurate on oldest stock, and stock popular with those who don't like to pay for it, plus stock returned or damaged.
Stock levels of large TVs, for example, tended to be accurate as these were in limited numbers, moved fast, and obvious if customers or employees tried to walk out without paying
Errors are usually corrected only once a year, at stock-take. Staff rarely took responsibility to correct mistakes on the system.

Systems that seem highly accurate by listing there are X many available, lead to most frustration when there are less than that available. ("Staff must be hiding it for themselves.")
DS has "solved" this problem by locking us out of their stock system, just letting us search for common stock available for "Click & Collect" or online. The new owners are moving customers towards popular or high markup items, plus daily deals, and away from the odd products from the past. They have also ordered old stock to be disposed of (sold cheaply, or even dumped). Soon there will be no more limited stock bargains at DS. And there will be fewer stores as DS moves more online - with the new system & reportedly new warehouses to come. Staff numbers were slashed at the end of May, with almost all assistant managers made redundant.

If you have ever performed stock taking duties, you soon learn stock on system does not equal stock on shelf. There are many reasons, but basically boils down to the problem introduced by letting humans near stock! And sometimes the difference is perplexing - when stock on system is less than stock on shelf (eg stock incorrectly enters into system, with wrong code recorded).

In 1st year Uni I recruited & trained my first stock-taking team (fellow uni students). Stock-taking is expensive & makes no profit, so low paid workers are usually employed - introducing new errors into the system. My team was intelligent & cheap - so I got a lot of work. But stores usually did not count old, clearance, or discontinued lines - as these were generally written down as a loss already. Only more expensive items warranted stock-taking accurately. The rest was guessed. Sound like the old DS stock system??

Dick smith must have been listening to all the whingers at ozbargain so now we haveto ring round,
At least their old store stock system gave us a clue where there might be stock.

    Nice work guys

    • I think we need a special kind of status for Dick Smith's stock level: Schrödinger's stock
There is no way to tell from DS's website whether there is stock or not, and unless you phone a store a product is either in stock, not in stock, or both.
