[ALDI] $149 Medion 4" Dual SIM Smartphone

190

Medion E4002 (MD 98388) 4" Dual SIM Smartphone

  • Android 4.1 Jelly Bean
  • 1Ghz dual core processor
  • 512MB RAM, 4GB ROM
  • 850/2100Mhz 3G support (Telstra/Voda OK, not good for Optus)
  • Dual SIM
  • 5.0MP rear camera, 0.3MP front camera
  • microSD slot for up to 32GB
  • unlocked
  • 1500maH battery
  • 1yr warranty, 60 day satisfaction return warranty

A $129 Telstra Huawei Y300 has what appears to be similar specs, though bigger 1700mAH battery but sells for less, though it's single SIM and locked to Telstra. Unlock codes may be available from bagman for ~$6. Overall better deal unless you need dual sim capability.

A $139 unlocked Optus Huawei G510 again appear to match it for specs, minus dual-sim. Comes with 4.5" IPS LCD. It's biggest feature being a 900/2100Mhz band if need it for Optus use. Or available in locked form: $149 Optus Huawei G510.

A $199 Huawei Ascend P1 is higher spec - JB, dual-core, 4.3" 960x540 LCD, 1GB of RAM, unlocked, 850/900/1900/2100 (quad-band) but no dual-SIM. -> NOTE: no stock ATM but DSE have supposedly ordered 2000 units. So expect them in the next few weeks.

A $199 Huawei Ascend G600 is higher spec - dual-core, 4.5" 960x540, 768MB RAM, unlocked, but no dual-SIM.

A $99 Vodafone Huawei G300/G300+ prev OZB page is lower specced with single-core CPU and ICS OS but may appeal to those wanting a low cost option. G300+ model having 850/900/2100 support so giving full 3G signal performance for Optus, Telstra and Vodafone.

NOTE: I'm no a Huawei rep or anything. This brand just happens to offer a lot for value at this point in time.

EDIT: Updated the ALDI phone with full specs.

the THL w100 is a much better spec phone and has some great reviews on it also at a similar price.

delivery is from asia though so it will take about 2 weeks afaik.

    • +2

That might be the case, but the point of aldi is the 60 day no questions asked return period. Critical for these China phones.

  • Might be a variant of the MD 98332. You'll need translate for this link.

    http://www.focus.de/digital/handy/tid-31689/medion-life-p401…

    512MB RAM it seems.

    • +1

This one has three bottom buttons. The one you link, which I did find in my searches, has four. I concluded then they are different products.

      • Sure, but it's likely that Aldi commissioned a variant for this market using the same base model.

Note that they are soft buttons rather than hardware buttons, so easy to specify in software.

These days Chinese factories are like Internet Pizzerias, you take a basic design, mix and match, and they churn it out for you.

  • +1

    512MB are a no go

    • We aren't 100% sure it's 512mb but it's more likely than not that it is 512MB. Appears they would rather omit that detail than publish what could be deal breaker for some.

  • Are Medion and Bauhn Aldi's own product lines ??

    • Also Tevion.

    • +2

According to Wikipedia, apparently Lenovo owns majority stake in Medion, which is a German brand.

  • I'd like to know what network band

    • Leaning towards Telstra, would be silly to sell a phone that's not compatible with ALDI mobile/Telstra 3G.

  • +2

my advice is shop around and don't rule out the usual China/HK resellers, for an extra 60 bucks i got a quad core MTK 6589 with 2gb ram according to antutu + 5" 1920x1080 lcd running Android 4.2.3, looks like a longer Samsung S4, totally love it!

    • Hi,
I am looking for a dual sim Android phone. I tested a Samsung Duo, screen is too small plus resolution is crap. What brand is your MTK6589 and how is reception quality etc?
      Thanks

      • -2

big ask to buy china shit phone vs. an aldis which has stores all over the eastern seaboard and 60 days return warranty

        • I guess most shit phones are made in China.

        • +5

          Agree hunter, that includes iphone

      • the one i got is the i9500 model from dx, do a search for it, as for reception it's good, i got both a vodaphone and aldi sim in phone, aldi uses the telstra network but because i have it in the 2g slot the reception is lower than the other 3g slot, if i swapped slots it would be better reception, anyway $211 for a full hd quad core phone is cheap! build quality is good too, sound is quite good with included earbud h/f

    • +1 For the network bands on the MTK, I was looking at one last night, but there were conflicting reports on the network bands…

    • MTK 6589

      link ?
What is the build quality like ?

    • I have not seen any quad core + 2gb + 5" FHD china phones for less than $300.

      Link please?

Only one I could find with all the requested specs, if you drop your requirements down to 1gb ram you find quite a lot.

        http://www.pandawill.com/mobile-phone-c1/android-os-phone-c5…

      • do a search for i9500 on dx.com, officially ram is 1gb but according to antutu 3.3 it has 2gb ram, and the total ram reported by phone is around 1.9gb, i might take a photo and upload it here later tonight

        • According to pictures of Antutu it does have 2GB ram.

EXCEPT that once you read in the question areas you find out that it is in fact false.

ok, this is a screen shot of settings>apps>running http://tinypic.com/r/35k2vso/5 it says RAM right there above the two figures, unless there is another figure called RAM? bottom line, 1gb or 2gb i'm happy either way, i have a ton of games d/l from google play(works right out of box!) and no compatibility issues so far, they play smooth as a babys bottom….uh i ASSume! lol!

        • oooooohhhh, that seems good enough for me :)

I think it's time to use that $25 voucher from dx's last stuff up. Is the one I linked at dx the same as what you ordered?

        • yes that's the one, i jumped in just before the AUS$ took a nose dive so i got it slightly cheaper :P

          1. Talk Time 180 [3H] & i take it these X2-standbys, in practice constrain usability time; unless you've a setting to disable one of ur cards?

          2. would be of my other key concerns that these equal to 31% 'invisible' fhd (wasted) pixels being coupled onto Phones(*) would be having even a more significant draining impact.

          *sqrt((1920^2) + (1080^2)) shows
          2202.90717008; 300PPI = "retina";
          QED they're indiscernible until
          you get up to 2202 / 300 =
          7.34"'Tablet'-that's not a phone.
          hence 720p's "1468.60478005" is the
          more suited compromise.

        • I totally agree that there is a point at which pixels become 'invisible'. I just go by the theory of "get the highest spec for your money". If I could find one with a 5" 1280x720 screen, quad core, 2gb ram and >=16gb built in for the same price then I would probably get that instead. Only one I can find is the Jiayu G4 for $280, and even then I had to drop to a 4.7" screen. In most cases it seems cheaper to get the FHD screen…

  • This is better than my son's Telstra Urbane/ZTE T22 how?

    • Probably only in that its unlocked, has dual SIM, is a dual core rather than single core, could be more reasons

      • +1

Plus a 'better' camera, could still be more reasons

  • Anyone know if it's standard size sim or microsim?

  • I think most phones are made in china, my nexus was made in taiwan, similar thing. Excuse my ignorance. :)

If you were going to buy a cheap no name chinese phone, then I guess this is the one for you. The twin sim could be useful to get the best of both worlds? How does that work?

  • +1

    mtk6577 cpu almost guranteed

    512mb most likely

easily can do around $100 from china shipped

missing aldi no question return tho, your choice

  • +3

Now you too can make phone calls like Stringer Bell!

    • +1

Only because I am a fan… But I don't think this qualifies as a burner

      • I think he was referring to Stringer swapping out his SIM all the time trying to make those real estate deals :-)

  • You will have to live with Jelly Bean 4.1 for the life of the phone. No upgrades and very unlikely to gain attention of ROM developers. Medion do not have any support that I know of other than returning the unit for assessment/repair. Their support site is a joke. Tried to get specifications for one of their PC motherboards over the phone and email, and was told they do not have them.
But the PC is still working well though.

man kogan had this 5inch same mtk6577 crap for same price and yous dont flock all over it

    http://www.kogan.com/au/buy/agora-50-dual-core-smartphone/

    • Yeah.. an extra inch with the same resolution. The Kogan is 5" 800x480 running ICS. This is 4" 800x480 running JB. The Kogan would be ranked at the bottom amongst the Chinese HD/FHD 5" phones and even (imho) against this one.

As normal, the internationally sourced phones boast the greater specs:
    http://www.focalprice.com/MH0528W/N7100_55_Android_42_MTK658…
    QHD(5.5')\WCDMA850\ 4G 1G\ 6KmAH\ 8MP\ .11N\ 4.2.. the absolute minimum.

Also, keep your eyes peeled for gorilla glass, or high performance sound.

    • 4core 1G ram pushing 35pc more pixels for 13pc" yup.. contest over-.

      • +1

        pc

You know they have a symbol for that…

    • Anyone got 10% code to make that price level..or to wait a couple of months ?ya ya 8]

Still, I cannot fault Aldi.m for its (effective)$25/unmetered nextg voice bolt-on &-5gb data stack. Just perfect for any phablet phone.

  • Interesting discussion here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1846397 on the mtk6577…antutu benchmarks look ok.

  • Hi I think it's a variation this Medion smartphone listed on the German Medion site

    http://www.medion.com/de/prod/MEDION%C2%AE+LIFE%C2%AE+P4013+…

MEDION® LIFE® P4013 (MD 98332) 4 inch display, 512 meg ram (but only single sim from what I can tell)

if anyone can find a review of that phone it would be helpful in getting a head's up due to Aldi sketchy details

  • .
If it turns out it really is the Huawei Ascend Y300
other online sellers in Australia sell the Y300 dual sim for $229 plus postage/insurance

    http://www.mobicity.com.au/huawei-u8833-y300-dual-sim.html

so with the Aldi it's cheaper …. if you want a "dual sim" phone (1 sim for calls, 1 sim for data)

    • Huawei Y300 locked to Telstra is only $129, we could pay a few more bucks to unlock it. $229 plus p&h is too much

  • I've a budget of around 200 to get my mother a new android smart phone next week. Has to arrive next week too, any local sellers of these decent Chinese phones that ship fast ? Otherwise this aldi/telstra one may unfortunately fit the bill.

  • Huawei Ascend G510 for $149 at Optus is not bad. 4.5" IPS screen, 1.2GHz Dual Core, NFC and DLNA connectivity, DTS Sound.
    https://www.optus.com.au/shop/prepaid/mobile/huawei/ascend-g…

  • Much like our Aldi Medion, nowhere near hits it in key areas of (2:)RAM, (300:)ppi, (4:)processor and 5- 6" screen size ( FY14), & overtly misses (850)WCDMA cover
I will just have to aim higher for the (sadly, moved) "sweet spot", 220-$250, China.

  • Hi
Does this have a flash for the camera?

  • +1

    +1 for the description

  • Same here, +1 for Op's effort

  • "
850/2100Mhz 3G support (Telstra/Voda OK, not good for Optus)
    "

    I thought 2100Mhz is Optus's frequency ?

  • These things were flying out the door at Aldi this morning. I got one before they ran out. Its pretty nice so far. Dual SIM is good, got a Telstra and an Optus SIM in, and working fine. I'm trying Optus as default for data now, and I've got HSPA on Optus (in Melbourne).

Comes with a screen protector already on, but has scratch-resistant glass.

Dedicated navigation buttons I always like.

Noise cancelling mike. Even a front-face camera.

Very lite on the bloatware. Feel is nice and light, good grippy finish.

    OTA updates are enabled.

No root required to change the default write disk, to ensure apps go to SD card.

Will look at rooting it today.

  • Bought the new Medion Android from Aldi last Sunday. I've had to recharge the battery 3 times since. Getting service from Medion is HOPELESS. In would have been cheaper to buy an iPhone - at least they are reliable.

  • Medion doesn't answer their phone. Medion doesn't have space on their Contact Us sufficient to write of problems. The recorded message rattles off the email contact so quick you can't write it down. Medion is in North Sydney area but isn't in the Sydney phone book. No street address for snail mail. Aldi has no email contact. Aldi has no phone contact. Not a good feeling from dealing with either of these businesses.

  • Fortunately there I haven't had yet to reach aldi. More rather the network has worked.
