Not advocating this but this would be better.

    • Buffalo - good little workhorse! - just upgraded from 2tb drives to WD Red 3tb's and all is sweet in RAID 5

      • Do you have the 4 bay? My QNAP 4bay has two dead slots, so it's effectively a 2bay now - plus it's out of warranty so not really worth repairing from what I've read online (internal board is likely faulty). How is the Buffalo for running 24/7?

        • Synology DS412+ is the one to go for 4Bay. I got it running 24/7 for more than 9months now.

        • Yeap! Pooh no good then perhaps. Hmmmm I do like it. Crosses fingers for mine

If I had to get one now tho, prob go for another micro server or the 5 or 8 bay synology.

      • Does it support the 4tb as well ?

  • Why would i buy this over a HP microserver?

    • +2

You wouldn't have to dick around with an os. But microserver would be way better.

      • A small NAS should use less power also than a server. If all you want to do is read and write files, that's a big plus.

    • I got 3 HP microservers at home, the crap part is not being able to RAID hard disks bigger than 2TB.

    • Freenas on the n54l is brilliant. Just not raided yet. So not sure there

  • you'd have to give me a good reason why this is a lot better than a netgear 2 bay for $200

  • Not to criticize this deal, but consider this:
A $50 (or free) p4 from gumtree will fare better than this if you can afford the space in your garage. ANd that $150 saved will buy you a lot of electricity.

    • +1

Assuming a P4 is using 50 Watts more than this NAS for the same drives then the difference in energy cost is around $130 per year. P4s were not known for their low power consumption.
      Assumes 30c/kWh and 24/7 operation.
If you need storage and not other functions needing a high powered server you are generally better off with a NAS.

    • Does a $50 P4 have RAID capability? My old one didnt :)

  • WE have a Aldi Medion Nas 1.5 TB , and love it ,
Never had any issues with it, only reason to upgrade would be tax time and maybe more storage.

What's the most value for money config NAS.
