"THE best strategy games off all time"

    • +2

Particularly because it is actually strategy, unlike most 'RTS' titles.

      • +1

Now I feel sad….this is one game I could not beat.

They had a counter for everything I tried.

Yet I can beat 'most RTS titles'….does this mean I am a pretender?

        • love this game, I manage to beat it.

        • which you couldnt beat?

the Krogoth encounter special mission was my kryptonite, as a teeny kid i did not have the brain power to process the strategy

        • The damn skirmish maps.

        • Mine too. Took so many tries before I found out all you had to do was dragon teeth a perimeter around your base, before the first Krogoth attacked you.

Once the dragon teeth are in, you can safely and leisurely build up your base and whittle down the enemy.

        • thats one way to do it, but it is possible to do it without them. iirc spiders and taking over one of the krogoths was the way to go.

        • Garhg!

How does one defend against Core air attacks?

          Defenders are useless.

          Anti-Flak is useless.

        • its been so long since ive played it i really dont remember but i know that it was damn hard.

might have to dig it out again (or at least find my isos) and have a play agian.

it is the best game EVAR tho

        • Use Fleas, millions of em, madness

THE BEST FKNG RTS EVER SRSLY

    • +1

The scale of it, actual-3D units (rare back then), the explosions and debris flying everywhere, reclaiming metal from wrecks, terrain with actual slopes that your units had to climb, the huge skirmish maps, smart order queueing, DAT MUSIC… this game was way ahead of its time.

PS: Brawler swarms, suicide-paradropping commanders, big bertha guns firing right across the map, peewee rushes, crazy tower defense systems, relying on destroyed bots to block enemy progress, awesome fan-made units…

      I could go on :)

  • +3

I remember the music most of all.

    • Jeremy Soule. Who then went on to even bigger projects. I was just looking him up on wikipedia the other night. Some amazing work he has done.

      • His music for Morrowind was the soundtrack of my life for 6 months…

    Good warmup for Planetary Annihilation

  • whoa man thats an old game, bit of nostolgia, still red alert is my first strategy love!

oh yeah?! well D.. Dune 2 damnit!

        A building of a dynasty

        • The spice must flow.

        • Acknowledged!

          Atreides out!

      • Warning! Sandworm

        • For some reason, all I remember out of Dune 2 are Devastator tanks, a voice saying "Wormsign" and me scrambling to move harvesters away before they got eaten.

        • The best thing was learning that if you blocked in your spice refinery with other buildings and you had Carryalls they would automatically take your harvesters back to unload when full, and then drop them back on the spice field.

          Ah the memories.

I remember not being able to play this back in the day and being sad. PC didn't have the req specs (was 800mhz and 128mb ram). 15 years on, BOO YEAH!

Finally upgraded to 256mb and overclocked to 1.1ghz

    • +4

Are you sure? because I played this on a Pentium 133mhz with 32mb of ram. Played Dark Reign on the same pc too.

      • +1 those were the days :)

      • I ran it comfortably with a 333mhz Celeron with 16MB RAM and a 4MB cheapo video card

        • With 16MB you probably couldn't play the large maps. I like that it told you what res and RAM people had in the multiplayer screen.

      • I played it with the exact same spec! I remember sitting down to play a bit of TA and then opening up the curtains and it was morning. No wonder I fell asleep during lectures.

I remember I had enough grunt in my PC to run Nesticle and Sega genesis emulators but not SNES or neo geo emulators. I thought my brother's Pentium 2 was the shiznit because you could play metal slug on it all day long.

      Minimum CPU Type: Pentium
      Minimum CPU Speed: 100 MHz
      Minimum RAM Required: 16 MB
Minimum Hard Disk Space: 40 MB
      Graphics Type: SVGA
      Graphics Resolution: 640x480
      Color Depth: 256 Colors

You didn't need to run it at 100fps dude :P

      • I played it on a PC with those minimum specs (P100,16MB). Did the job.

      • The system requirements were on the link at the bottom right, they are different??

Specs aside, the fact still remains I couldnt play it, now I can!!

  • Oh this is the best game ever…

  • I wonder who the money from this is going to? The company that made the game Cavedog went broke many years ago and I was under the impression it was abandonware…

There was also an open source project to recreate TA as a modern 3D RTS (TA SPRING) which is still running here… http://springrts.com/wiki/Games

    Best game from Westwood :p

    • looks like you just failed geek history 101

      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Total_Annihilation

this was made at a time when red alert was in every boyhood's game activity

Ever heard of sarcasm? Since no name was displayed on the poster, wanted to know if there any Westwood, now EA" fans still around.

        • +2

What about Westwood, non EA fans?

        • r3volt, count me in there!

  • PeeWee

  • +3

This and Dark reign was a great year for RTS fans!

    • Amen to that. I still have the boxes for both!

I did end up playing a lot more TA than DR, though I have to say DR had a very nice manual :)

  • This was good but my fave old school rts: Warcraft 2. Not 3 or 1, but 2, the middle child was the greatest. "Your town is under attack!"

    • Yep Warcraft 2 before they stuffed up 3

    • Hasn't aged quite as gracefully as this one. Still plays OK, but there is almost no depth at all.

I don't understand, I was able to beat this game and the expansion pack without too many dramas…and I'm really bad at RTS games…..unless I'm just good with this one. So many cheap things to do though.

Build 20 "carrier" planes (the ones that pick up units) and go pick up the opposite teams commander and their own anti-air shoots them down and kills him. I was trolling before I knew what trolling was.

  • I used to play multiplayer TA all the time.

There was a hard unit limit so you could only build X units or have X defenses. The limit probably made a meaningful contribution to balance and gameplay but we used to play with a patch that removed the limit - could then play with armies with literally thousands of units (particularly planes)

  • How much is shipping? i made an account on the site and it just took me directly to pay with paypal, didn't ask for address or anything…

    • nevermind just realized this is DL only.

Was after a hard copy for the old school collection!

  • What I loved about this game (apart from all the things stated in the other comments) was the ability to import new units into the game (and even customise unit attributes).

I still remember excitedly waiting for the next unit pack - particularly:

    Incredible!

  • :( Damm no good to me. I dont have a floppy drive to install the game anymore

  • Does this electronic download come with the music???

Ive posted more Gamers Gate games here @ 75% off

  • How come there's no Total Annihilation Kingdom ? I like that series apart from the original.

  • +1 , good find man ! Best bit is I had 1800 points gathering dust from when I made a purchase a couple of years ago. Not enough to buy Anything.. until now ! :) Free game. Now, to get my ass handed to me in style…

  • I love this game. I spent far too many hours playing this in my teenage years. I was even in the top 100 players in the Cavedog online thingo (I can't remember what it was called now).
I even ran a website dedicated to this game :/
