EXTRA-10

EDIT: Add this $6 fluro flare to your checkout as well to make it $160, and then apply the EXTRA-10 coupon. http://www.wiggle.co.uk/fibre-flare-micro-flare-duo-light/

Hi guys,

Cheapest price I found for an extremely bright bike light (1000 Lumen light output)

If you'd against that though, you can use the 10-EXTRA coupon code at checkout to get the price down to around $155. Cheapest price in Australia is around about the $300 mark I've found. You have to add something else to your cart though for about $4 to get it up to the $160 minimum spend.

Put it on your bike when you play Road Rash

  • That's more than I paid for my bike!!!

    • Yeah…. but the cheap lights off AliExpress (UltraFire) cost about $50 per light. Charging them is a pain, plus extrnal battery on your bike.

This one is USB chargable so you ride to your destination (in my case, thats work), plug it in, and 8 hours later unplug it and put it back on your bike. Elegant and simple. And mind bendingly bright.

I'm thinking of getting a biggish battery pack thats solar powered and putting it in my bag if I ever need a lot of light for extended amounts of time :)

I agree the battery pack is a bit cumbersome, but what was worse is that I received a US plug, I had to use pliers to twist it to AU haha. Needless to say, I paid $20 for my UltraFire 1000 Lumen from DX and can't really justify another $126 just for the convenience of USB..

  • A much cheaper alternative is to buy a Cree light for $5 and a piece of gaffa tape to tape it to your handlebars

      • I got myself a Cree T6 XM-L headlamp for $14 bucks, removed the elastic band and zip-tied the headlight onto my handle bars. And it does 1600 lumens (claimed, but I reckon it's about 1100 true lumens).

Works like a charm and the 18650 batteries I got for free during the eBay $10 voucher exploit.

    • Depends. Most of the smaller Cree lights are 'throwers', which aren't very useful for biking.

      • See below.

  • Lezyne's launching their new light range in mid July. The new Mega Drive will be 1200 lumen. Details here: http://www.bikeradar.com/news/article/new-lezyne-digital-flo…

I'm not sure what the 1000 lumen model currently goes for but if they're discounting the end of line models that's a good thing :)

  • In case you are worried that the drivers might still be able to see after seeing this light at night, there is always this one :)

    http://dx.com/p/trustfire-tr-d010-5-x-cree-xm-l-t6-2000lm-5-…

  • Or buy one of these, you can use it in your house when you need a head light or when you are riding the bike on your helmet/head…

    • Expect that helmet-mounted lamps will soon become illegal. In a car, it's illegal to have the lights higher than your eyes, and now that bike lights are just as bright as a car, expect the law to follow.

Personally I hate bike riders who use these lights, helmet mounted or otherwise, because there is no shielding on them. Low beam in a car directs the light so negligible light goes above horizontal. Not so with bike lights, they are blinding all the other drivers on the road as they are the equivalent of high beam.

      • Nothing wrong with a small helmet-mounted lamp, but you'd be an idiot to head-mount one of those XM-Ls.
Yes they are sold with head-straps, but they are NOT for use when cycling. Great for night walks and caving, or even interior house painting.

Cheapest price I found for an extremely bright bike light (1000 Lumen light output)

Really, really have not tried too hard, have you?
Admittedly its a bit hard to get past the BS lumens claims, but its not hard to find a twin Cree XM-L kit for a fraction of the price above. And they have a better battery than the lezyne.

I'd avoid anything with the word "mega" in the name.

    • I did some Googling around, and found some independent reviews where they tested the light output, and it actually put out more than the 1000 lumens they are advertising…

      • Yes, i was talking about the lumen claims on e-bay etc.
The 1000 lumen figure is reasonable for a twin XM-L. You'd just need to be moving to keep it cool.

I have a $40 single emitter kit, and would not want it any brighter for urban use, ie not high beam.

  • holy crap, 1000 lumens… might be more dangerous if not setup correctly, haha.

  • Which are the better Cree lights to consider (for biking)? I don't think that I can warrant spending $156.

    • Just go to eBay or Deal Extreme (if you have coupons to spend) and look for Cree XM-L T6. Should be plenty of options to choose from.

      • The main problem I had with the cree lights from overseas was how little I trusted the charger to not explode in the middle of the night when I was charging them…

I don't trust the charger either, that's why I bought a Nitecore i2 and skipped using the included charger.
The nitecore i2 costs $15, and charges not only 18650's but also a variety of other Nimh cells.

        • thanx 4 the info- checked it out & will def be buying one 2morow.

        • Thankfully I read up on it and have heeded the warnings from others. I bought one that will take my Eneloops. Don't mind sacrificing the reduced output for safety.

      • Thanks for your help! Pick one up from eBay and a bracket also.
