Looks to be cheaper than duty-free too! Well, at least at the Sydney Duty Free http://www.syddutyfree.com/category/liquor/whisky/11424-john…

    • +12

Sad also to note that Sydney Duty free is more expensive than RRP in most countries in the world.

      • indeed
check the duty free prices for Auckland!

its like 15% off due to the exchange rate
and if you order online before hand its usually 20% off
and their booze is normally cheaper cause of cheaper tax
        CRAZY!

        • +5

          cheaper case of cheaper tax
isn't the point of duty free is because its tax free?

        • +1

Everyone expects a Duty Free store to be cheaper, so such stores here don't have to try very hard to compete. Why? Because many people don't fancy lugging 2 * 1.125L bottles of booze in their hand luggage from overseas stores. There's also the risk of losing your purchase during a stop over if a plane change is required and the Duty Free purchase wasn't in checked baggage. They instead expect the local Duty Free store to be competitive (which it isn't).

Had a look at wine prices at Duty Free stores around Australia recently? Dan Murphy's is often cheaper, and they have to pay 29% WET and 10% GST.

        • Yes, Duty Free is often more expensive.

        • I heard Sydney Airport is to blame for pushing the high rent prices for stores. However, this isn't my field, and there's no shortage of "reasons" by big companies for why we pay more in Australia. This is Ozbargain- we know who they are yes? ;)

        • that GST free at duty free
but we have some booze tax to discourage drinkers

  • Yeah, good price. I brought some back for a mate last time I went OS & paid ~$200 duty free for 700ml.

  • nice, got something to drink after sports!
1lt is probably just enough. XD

    • +5

You owe me a new keyboard since your comment made me spit coffee all over it.

  • Bought one thanks. Gonna save it for my old man's birthday present in October.

  • Don't forget that you can price beat at Dan Murphy's (probably saving $1) if you're closer to a Dan Murphy's.

    Is this stuff alcoholic?

    • +4

Why the neg? Are people not allowed to have different tastes?

I found JW Blue to be too well balanced. Near impossible to fault, but by the same token, hard to get excited about.

I kind of prefer the slightly more quirky smoky flavours of Black. Good enough for Chris Hitchens, good enough for me ;-)

      • +64

It is a customary tradition to neg jv, regardless of what he says

No, in these forums, if you disagree with the OP, you get negged…

I have the last laugh though because I can get 4 litres of Double Black for the same as 1 litre of Blue… So I can stay pissed for longer !!!! :)

        • +1

          Totally agreed

        • +3

I disagree with Double Black… The only JW I'd drink for the taste is Blue, and that's not cost effective. I'd go with a cheap but easy single malt any day.

If I want to get pissed, I'd get a wine in a box.

Aah! ….. that explains a lot.

        • goon tastes too shit, them $10/bottle are definitely worth the spend. But imo I'd rather just go a carton of asahi or tooheys new - have some class at least mate ;)

        • -2

Nobody who drinks Tooheys has class

        • +2

          Still classier than Victoria Bitter

        • Apparently, and not my words: "but the best cold beer is Vic. Victoria Bitter."

  • +21

Guys, great if you're buying for a gift etc. But if you're looking at actually drinking some nice whiskey's then you'd be much better off buying 3 X single malts from different regions for that price. Grab an Islay a sweet Speyside and something like Talisker or Highland Park and you'll be laughing.

    great price, sub average product.

    • +12

lol @ downvotes. More posers than whisky drinkers methinks.

      • +1

Here's the negativity and pessimism that's been rearing it's ugly butt all over OzBargain recently. Classic example.

      • +1

Ha, 26 votes to date for a $200 bottle of booze. Who would of picked we had such a refined and sophisticated bunch browsing Oz bargains? I wonder if this deal will out score any of the "free condom" post of the past?

        • +14

Someone with refined and sophisticated taste would never waste $200 on a bottle of Johnny Walker Blue.

EDIT: Considering i'm getting negged, I'll justify my comment

          Reasons:
          1. It's full of caramel to add colour (no reason but marketing).
          2. It's padded out with cheap grain whisky, it's not a pure malt blend. Green label was actually JW's best value for money blend as it had no grain whisky, it was all malt whisky.
          3. It's chill-filtered - this removes impurities but also removes richness in flavours and artificially smoothens the whisky.
          4. The rare whiskies used in blending JW blue which drive up the price are at such a low percentage that they are barely distinguishable.
          5. It's only 40% ABV. Lower alcohol content reduces the fullness and longevity of flavour. Even Green Label was 43%.

Sure it's very smooth, and easy to drink (but so are most $40-$60 blends) but this is boring and overpriced for what it is. If you're a cashed-up ostentatious poser with no appreciation for whisky then sure, buy this. If you're looking for richness in flavour and something memorable it is better to spend your money elsewhere.

        • +5

          Oh, and another reason:

          1. There is no age statement on a bottle of Johnnie Walker Blue. The age statement defines the age of the youngest whisky contained in the bottle. In a bottle of Johnnie Walker Blue you could be getting some very young whiskies as part of the blend. This does not necessarily affect the quality of the whisky, but it shows you they could be using cheaper younger whiskies to pad out the blend.
        • Thanks for the reasons, you seem pretty knowledgeable. Can you give some examples of top shelf whiskey that you DO consider to be worth money?

Also, how do you rate Chivas Regal Royal Salute which is also around the $200+ mark?

        • Is green label discontinued? We still have it at my work.. Hmm, maybe there are a bunch left at the warehouse or something (Woolies).

        • +1

I personally enjoy Lark Single Barrel Single Malt, it's from Tasmania and oh my lord, it's brilliant. I'm no seasoned whisky drinker, but I'm getting into it and this is the best bottle I have tried. It's about $130 for 700ml, and having tried blue label also, I would never recommend blue label! Blue label is just marketing, there's a reason it has slowly gone down in price over the past few years… people try it and discover it's not really that great.

If you can't get your hands on some Lark, I also enjoy The Glenlivet 18 YO, about $100, but if you're looking for something for $200 I would highly recommend Glenfiddich 21 Year Old Gran Reserva - my boss (he has a massive scotch collection worth like $7000 - crazy I know) says it is one of the best he has.

        • I think it's a highland or speyside but I've had some recent fine ones where i love the sherry/fruity flavour and long finish:

mortlach flora and fauna (16 yo? 14yo?? one of them)
and glendronach 15 year from memory.

heard the mortlach makes up the blue label blend as well which is interestingly coincidental.

I too wonder - can you get green labels anymore? Anywhere we can order or grab it from?

    • -4

much better off buying 3 X single malts

malts don't taste too good with coke though…

      • +1

they taste fine.. although it kinda defeats the purpose of paying the 'premium'

      • +6

What?! I hope u're talking coke in different form… Why would u mix a single malt with anything in the first place?

      • +1

single malt goes great with ginger ale!

      • +1

And you come here trying to defend whisky drinkers. Oh, jv.

If you are going to mix something, don't bother spending more than $40-$50. With Coke there is no point in spending more.

        • +7

I hope you are not taking jv too seriously…
mixing this with coke is the standard joke when this gets posted.

        • +3

Exactly, why ruin good coke by adding Blue Label?

    • +7

Agree, this is the " Beats By Dr Dre " of whiskys, fancy name, big loud image, but highly overrated & overpriced.

  • +8

I picked up a 1lt johnny blue at Changi duty free 24May2013 for S$98 and a 1lt johhny black for S$64. Now that a bargain

  • +1

Nothing like a "Johnny Blue and Coke" thanks OP…

    ;-)

  • +1

Not going to get into the debate about whether it is a good whiskey or not. As far as bargains go, it's definitely the best value I could find for store pick-up on http://www.boozle.com.au/

    • +2

True, this is definitely a good price for Johnny Walker Blue 1L, which is why I haven't neg'd this deal despite my earlier comments.

I just feel it is important to educate people so they can make an informed decision before spending $200 on a bottle of alcohol. With knowledge you can develop an appreciation and learn the true value of a product without getting sucked in by the marketing tricks surrounding it.

      • -1

        you are over-reacting. seriously.

$200 for a bottle of blended whiskey isn't expensive. considering people who go for a night out spend >$200 on cheap vodka and carbonated crap.

you need to chill out more bro.

fwiw, i have JW collections and I have 20+ yr old single malts. they all taste different but I wouldn't say blue is nasty.

infact, I blend the jw green with lemonade or coffee or icecream sometimes, but i refuse to drink it on its own.

imo, being able to customise a drink to your own taste is far superior since taste itself is subjective.

those on this thread judging people who buy blended scotches are as poseur as the ones they are trying to accuse of.

        • +3

$200 for a bottle of blended whiskey isn't expensive.

I never said it was. I just said that blue label is bad value for money for what you are getting. But this could be subjective because someone might love the taste of Blue Label and can't get that taste anywhere else, in that case I wouldn't call those people posers for enjoying what they love.

you need to chill out more bro.

I'm chill as bro. I just like talking about whisky almost as much as I enjoy drinking it. I'm passionate about sharing knowledge. It makes me happy to respond to you.

infact, I blend the jw green with lemonade or coffee or icecream sometimes, but i refuse to drink it on its own. imo, being able to customise a drink to your own taste is far superior since taste itself is subjective.

There's nothing wrong with that. What some people love, others don't. Do what makes you happy. Mixing a drink, or drinking on it neat - neither is superior, everyone has their own preference. I'm not judging you.

they all taste different but I wouldn't say blue is nasty.

I never said blue was nasty. I said it was a very smooth and easy to drink whisky but its profile just tastes boring to me (relative to its price) and that is my personal preference.

those on this thread judging people who buy blended scotches are as poseur as the ones they are trying to accuse of.

There's nothing wrong with drinking blended whisky. Blends aren't inferior, they're just different and shouldn't be put in the same class as single malts. Even I drink blended whisky, it's a great for cocktails, cooking with (e.g. whisky ham glaze) and even for resetting your palate when comparing single malts.

        • I tried some Glenfiddich 12y single malt a few days ago, found I liked it less than my favored JW DB, it was slightly smoother but didn't have as much dimension to it.
Not going discount the possibility I was somehow drinking incorrectly or that there's a different method to appreciating singles compared to blends.

EDUCATE ME! otherwise continue civil discussion.

        • No, you're quite correct.

Blends are - as you put it - less one-dimensional than singles.

A blender can, by definition, combine different proportions of different single malts, to get the balance of flavours he wants. And then, traditionally, he's allowed to pad it out with a bit of flavourless grain whisky which just makes the good stuff go a bit further.

Alternatively, a blender can grab a few tanker loads of whatever rubbish the distilleries want to get rid of, mix it together with as much cheap grain as he's allowed, and put it in square bottles with a red label. Ahem.

There's a cult mentality that a single-malt is definitively better than a blend. It's ridiculous.

There are some truly horrific singles out there. Luckily, not many of them make it into bottles in their own right; they get blended with other horrific singles, destined to be mixed with Coke. And that's no great loss. To be honest, I keep a bottle of nasty $25 scotch in my cabinet for mixing with cola when I feel like swinging that way.

A single malt is like a solo musician, a blend is like an orchestra.

A virtuosic solo is a magnificent thing to hear, and a highschool orchestra is even worse than the sum of its parts. On the other hand, a world-class orchestra can take you places that no single instrument can, and a beginner's violin solo is an experience you don't want to repeat.

An orchestra can be technically near perfect but emotionally uninspiring. Elevator music. That's JW Blue, in my opinion.

  • The price isn't bad, but personally I don't really rate this as a bargain. Yes, it is cheaper than the normal price, but it has been even cheaper before. In fact I bought a bottle of Johnny Blue from Dan Murphy's for $160 only a couple of months ago.

    • A 1 litre bottle for $160?

    • Was it 1 litre?

Also I don't rate this bargain because JW Blue is very overrated in my opinion (and the opinion of many true scotch drinkers that really appreciate a good drop).

    • My bad, it wasn't 1 litre. I take it back, this is a good price.

  • +2

If your trying to save money, you really shouldn't be drinking it in $195 bottles.

    • Makes a great present though. To dad boss etc.

  • Agree with everybody else. Way too overrated but good price though. Recent past, I have become a massive fan of Japanese scotches for their quality and the flavour. Yamazaki is one of my favorites at the moment.

    • I love Yamazaki. A Taiwanese brand called Kavalan would be great for you, if you like that taste. It will be imported into Australia soon (if not already).

For a blended Japanese taste to price though, nothing beats the regular Suntory… Just a few dollars for a 200ml bottle in Japan!

  • +1

    hey guys,

should this be mixed with l.a ice or cola cola ?

    just trolling :)

    • +2

i heard green tea is a better mixer…

    • Don't spend money on either, just use water - 80% water, 10% ice & 10% JW - lasts longer that way.

    • +1

There's a coke can special just below this post on the front page ;)

  • great price, but having been given free samples at the airport I found that while I did like it, I didn't like it enough to justify buying it, even at this price.

Thank you airport JW lady, for letting me try blue label, otherwise I would have bought this and blown $200 on mild disappointment.

  • +2

If you guys are willing to spend a little more, and want an unbelievable scotch that will blow the socks of anything from JW, try this one below.
    http://danmurphys.com.au/product/DM_345520/

IMHO The best thing JW do, is marketing (although TBH, their double black is not bad).

    • it actually costs less than this deal ? (though it's also 300ml less)
though IMHO when it comes to fine liquor, quality > quantity.

    • IMHO The best thing JW do, is marketing…

Agreed. I'll never forget the old HK barman JW ads from the 80's…"Hard to plonounce, but Johnny Walker is the drink" ;)
