Penfolds Koonunga Hill Range 1/2 Price at Dan Murphys

580

DM usually sells this wine for 13.20. At 6.90 it is cheap. This is the best price i've seen with this label in years.

Shiraz, Shiraz Cabernet and whites are also available.

I'm stocking this up.

    Thanks,

I'll use this to refill my empty bottle of Grange !!!

Second recession buster of the day. The first was a used condom as chewing gum.

    • I laughed, jv. You don't need that comedian course :)

    • Hahah,….funny thing is that because it is a wine made to consume now, and hence riper fruit with softer tanins, as opposed to Grange, which needs many years of maturing, to most peoples palates, this would taste better. Unless you have a nice old ( super valuable ) Grange :-) Half serious, half joking.

anyone find any Vintage: 2010 ???
    Welland, SA = 2012 Vintage

    • Yes, please advise if anyone spots any 2010 for the reds, particularly the Shiraz Cabernet.

      • Sydney
        Varietal: Shiraz
        Current Vintage: 2010

the others are 2011 and the Merlot is very green.

        • Buyer Beware: If you purchase based on vintage, prepare to be disappointed.
          I purchased 2010 and received 2012.
          Advertised as 2010;
          http://danmurphys.com.au/product/DM_904960/penfolds-koonunga…

Vintages may vary from store to store and when delivered. Every effort is made to ensure the current vintage is displayed, however variations can occur.

        • Yep same thing happened to me, except I used Click & Collect.

Went to the store grabbed the box of Red & walked out, decided to open the box in my car and found 2012 - went back in, the lady said they only have 2012 but then proceeded to ring around other stores for me. Another nearby store only had 2012, except for Brighton (VIC) who reportedly had 2011 (not 2010) but I didn't bother going there.

She said "we need to update our website info since we haven't had that Vintage for ages"

      • Malvern East VIC
        Varietal: Shiraz
        Current Vintage: 2010

        • Received a call from DM this morning, they don't have enough stock to fulfil my order but said they are getting more on Monday & will call back…

  • Is this in store or online only?

EDIT - Yes, appears to be in store.

    • …and online. My dad loves this wine. So called him. Apparently it was advertised as $7.90 per bottle as part of 6 bottles. I hecked for him and could have it delivered with free postage or reserved in store.

Anyone else think that the original price is much too high? I guess it comes down to a personal opinion, but I think it's a <$10 wine.

    • There are other wines I'd prefer at the $14 mark but it's worth $10 IMHO - it's pitched above Rawsons for example. $6.90 is great for this

    • +1

Yep I definitely buy this wine when on special for sub $10 which it often is around the traps. $6.90 is a steal.

Agree, especially these last couple of years, we have had good vintages in Australia, with good quality grapes and large volume yields. This year was not so good. Marketing, marketing, Penfolds has done this well over the years. I worked in the wine industry for many years in retail, wine bars, restaurants, as well as a top winery learning the whole business inside out. I also came from a marketing background, and believe me, the image of the front label, and what is written on the back, does not always reflect the actual quality of the wine in the bottle. Around 60 to 80% of people will buy a wine purely based on appearance of label. Learn to trust your own palate. Having said that, there are times when you want to take a bottle, with a quality/more upmarket image. Also some of the better wines I have drank over the years have been Penfolds, some were great value wines for their money ( Koonunga Hills and Bin 28 & 128 when they were under $15 many moons ago ), and some were others all the way up the range, not so good value for money, but great tasting/quality wines, generally for an occasion/enthusiast or people with big budgets. Cheers and enjoy

  • Grabbed 3x bottles of each of the reds.

  • Never seen this price from Dan's ever. Usually the lowest at 8.80!

  • Cheaper than Dan's grey label cleanskin range (which is pretty good). Koonunga Hill is pretty decent.

Don't forget ING for another 5% off ($6.55 woohoo)

Koonunga Hill Shiraz Cabernet is selling $6 each on 6 bottles at Liquorland warehouse in Sans Souci plus you can use a $10 voucher for purchases $50 and above.

Check out The Leader online pages pages 16-17
    http://magresources.f2.com.au/lsg/

I suppose you can have Dan Murphy price match it.

    • The ad says $7 in packs of 6 or more?

      • Oops. My Bad. Anyway, it still ends up cheaper if you purchase 8 bottles. 8 x $7 = 56 - 10(voucher) = $46 => $5.75 each.

    • That's a 2012 vintage at Liquorland

      • Shiraz cabernet vintage is 2011 at Liquorland. It's the cabernet merlot which is 2012 vintage.

  • great deal OP - love it. In true ozbargain fashion, I nipped down and got 6 cases, split them into lots of two then used my ING Direct card for additional 5% paywave rebate

  • -1
    • really?

      Across any 6 $14.25
      Each $15.00

      • Yeah, that's weird. I got the 1st Choice email and saw it as $7.50 yesterday, today it's $14.25…

  • Penfolds Thomas Hyland Cabernet is on special also. It does taste better but a tad dearer than KH.

    http://danmurphys.com.au/product/DM_902445/penfolds-thomas-h…

    ~$5 cheaper than usual price.

  • Penfolds Koonunga Hill Cabernet Merlot - is this a good buy for $6.90 per bottle in a case of 6?

    • Personally for a 'drink now" I prefer the cab merlot blend (just bought a dozen). The other reds are good but really benefit from an extra year or two in the bottle. Any of them are great buys at this price though.

  • Thanks op, bought via starthere so got 5.25% cashback and free delivery!

  • Thanks OP.
    Just ordered four of these:
    Varietal: Shiraz
    Current Vintage: 2010
    [Malvern East Store Vic]

  • Received a call from DM this morning, they don't have enough stock to fulfil my order but said they are getting more on Monday & will call back.
