OzBargainers are starting to annoy me with this habit...

Greetings,

As a long term ozbargainer I come here often and witness that many people say "nice deal op", "bought 1" or any other derivative of this however they fail to give the OP a +1 for the deal. It happens all the time when I look at other peoples posts and if people did this it would make the quality of deals better since everyone would know what people like.

Anyway, I'd like to know everyone's thoughts on this matter.

I understand and basically agree with you….but I guess at the end of the day it depends on the people to upvote or not…what people upvote depends on how attractive the deal is for them. So maybe a deal which you find great…others may find it ok thus not upvoting it….

I think there should be a pop-up for new users who have NEVER upvoted anything before, i.e. a very short but mandatory tour before a new user is able to post comments.

    nice forum post OP

    ;)

I see what you did there. :P

@ battler: Where's your positive vote then? :p

      • Against machej's comment above you.

  • I still don't know how to upvote a deal

I usually only upvote once the deal arrives in my hands, or its a pretty good deal that shouldnt have any problems. Whats the point in having a deal that has 300+ votes, but no one gets it (free sample or not). It doesnt exactly help when youre looking for reviews of that particular store via past OzB store deals.

By that time the deal is probably irrelevant.

  • What about the many more who aren't even members. There seem to be 5-6x as many guests as members. How about only members can click through to the post to read comments etc. I've seen a few people put up one off codes and have them used without even a thank you.

Maybe a good idea to add another "button" that you will click if you purchased/availed of the deal. This way, having 300 +votes for an item that only 3 persons bought will be clear to everyone.

At the end of the day, it's an honor system really. You thank the OP for a good deal, whether you purchased it or not. Of course being a democracy, not everyone will exercise this right - to be lazy :)

Sometimes it's like a positive vote costs money or something. Once I put up a bargain , someone commented but still no positive vote for the deal from them until I tracked them down at their home and asked why I didn't get a plus. Disclaimer it was my mum and she didn't know I had posted the deal but still.

  • Sometimes I forget, I just go straight for the comment box. If I check the comments later, and realise my mistake, I'll upvote (if applicable.)

Maybe another set of up/down-vote buttons next to the comment box would be handy for me ;)

    • I've been guilty of this. Fits too well, and fades into the backround.
I'm not all that keen on popups asking "Would you like to vote on this deal?" everytime you post, but maybe there could be a grey box under the username, similar to the one that says 'voting not allowed on comments posted more than 30 days ago', that says 'you have not voted on this deal yet' when they post a comment. Something to draw their attention to it.

Or auto positive vote if their comment contains the word 'thanks'

        No Thanks.

  • I feel like by the time that people start commenting on it (with those type of comments), it's already on the front page

I've noticed that people who read new have a REALLY high upvote/click ratio compared to once it hits the front page, so the people you're complaining are irrelevant anyway

  • Good post OP.

The "Thanks I grabbed one" with no + vote bugs me.

  • counter balances those who upvote without buying or thinking it's a good deal.

    Great topic OP.

I believe only registered members should have visibility of bargains, codes, comments etc. Non-members should be made to register and contribute and help ozbargain become even better than it already is. Too often I see people at work grab bargains without being logged in, and not a single thank you to the OP. Soul destroying.

  • How about instead of "Post comment" button, you have a choice of two buttons - "Post with positive vote" and "Post with negative vote" (or similar wording). That way if you want to make a comment, you vote for the privilege of making a comment.

Not acceptable. There are many comments on a deal that are neither for or against - Clarifying the deal or discussing how to use the item for example.

  • I rarely upvote, as i dont agreee with the voting process.

I find that being able to read some of the comments which say 'TY OP, bought one' etc shows me that people have actually taken the plunge to buy. It really is different to seeing just plain upvotes on the deal.

I think the combination of votes and comments really helps me gauge the deal worthiness.

If a deal had 30+ votes and no comments I'd likely not be that interested (depending on the item). But if the deal had, say, 20+ votes and a lot of positive comments and thanks to OP, then I'd notice people actually jumping on the deal and must be somewhat good.

Also, I only vote when I find a deal particularly good and a real bargain.
