Well according to the Microsoft press conference we can finally expect a system like the ps+ on the Xbox gold, starting with assassin's creed 2 and halo 3 (at least in the US, might offer different in our region like ps+ does) from July 1.
Here I was thinking fable 3 was an old game to offer.
At least another couple of freebies coming soon.
Details of a new Xbox 360 model have been released, and I take note of the following from the IGN article.
"The company (Microsoft) will also bring two games per month, free of charge, to Xbox Live Gold members. The first game is Fable III, available now. July's two games are scheduled to be Assassin's Creed 2 and Halo 3. Additionally, it was announced that "hundreds" of games are still on the way for Xbox 360."
Not the newest of games but still good titles I guess.
Just renew your one month Gold subscription mid month to get games in both months.

It worked for me, gives you 1 month free. Just make sure you turn off auto renewal so you don't get charged forever. After getting the free month I redeemed the game with no issues.
It said "Promotion Not Available" for me.

Got 1 month free gold using the link (and immediately turned off auto renewal), but when i go to try and download the game i get an error message. I've tried on both the console and the website with no luck.
On the console it says: "Sorry something went wrong. This isn't available for your region or the file is corrupted, or we don't recognized the format. Find more by looking up status code 80150017 at www.xbox.com/errorhelp"
And on the website: Sorry. Your purchase cannot be completed at this time. Please try again.
In both cases it comes up as "free" but i just can't seem to download it.
I have an AUS console with a US account…in case that effects anything?

I think you need AUS account.
The same thing happened to me, go and download the app TunnelBear and use the free account to browse as a USA IP (They must do some region filtering) and then redeem on your PC and it will work (make sure you select to pay with microsoft points!)

If you tried the method that Agret suggested and got it to download, did you end up being able to play the game after it downloaded? Because for me the file keeps showing up as a "corrupt file"…:(
