Thought it was a bargain after reading that as Nintendo Switch "2 for $579.10". /s

      • +21

Wait a couple years in the hope a minor upgrade is released? I dare say if someone wants a Switch 2, there is a strong likelihood that they wouldn't want to wait two years on the off chance of another new model

      • +8

Waiting another 1.5 to 2 years is pretty significant amount of time in my opinion.

Despite the price/specs, I reckon Nintendo Switch 2 remains a strong proposition because of its unique first party games, portability/'included screen'. I admit that there is a bit of good faith involved in expecting more games to trickle through in coming months.

Personally, I think that consoles like the Switch 2 is a perfect escape - and there's nothing quite like being part of the launch crowd, whether that be for the console or for new games when everyone is experiencing things for the first time.

        Everyone's different though.

        • +6

Reminder that the GameCube, Wii U and Virtual Boy all had unique first party games and none of them weren't commercial successes.

          • +8

            @PainToad:

            none of them weren't

            So they all were?

          • +1

@PainToad: While the range of first party games, and 3rd party support is critical to a consoles success, I think overall, the factors that contribute to commercial success or failure are much more complex (pricing, form factor, competitors, economy etc.).

I understand the comparison to the Wii U but referencing a complete failure like the Virtual Boy from 30 years ago is not really relevant. Nintendo made a lot of poor choices with the VB, it was amazing that the console actually launched at all. The Switch 2 is an iteration of the very successful Switch, it's not a brand new, experimental gimmick. I expect NS2 will be widely successful, even just by trading off the Switch branding.

            • @A 1:

even just by trading off the Switch branding

Didn't work for the Wii U. But we'll see.

              • @PainToad: You're correct, it certainly did not.

        • Yeah this will sell very well.

      • +3

keep on waiting until 2033 bro. Nintendo probably isn't doing midgen 'pro' consoles again for a long time. At best there'll be an OLED version or something similar in a few years.

      • +1

I think the price for the console is fine. Yes its on the expensive side for sure but its still priced the same as the steamdeck which is years old at this stage.
Now if you want to complain about the price of games im with you all the way.

        • +2

I think the price for the console is fine.

You might. But average parents won't and that's Nintendo's main market.

          • +1

@PainToad: Have a look at the console market. We actually get a solid price in Australia for this, and it is just the general cost of things. I don't like it either, but it isn't bad pricing. Game pricing is a bit different, but the console pricing is solid.

            • +1

@witheredcouch: It would be more solid if it were the same as the current switch 1 pricing (and switch 1 gets a price reduction)

              • +1

@YoursTruly: That would be incredible, however with current production costs it was never going to be possible.

            • +3

@witheredcouch: I didn't say it was "bad" pricing. I said I think they'll struggle to sell it (after the initial wave) in this current economic market, at that price to parents.

          • -2

@PainToad: Average parents are probably more worried about GPU prices these days.

      • Given the way power budgets and processor costs are increasing, I strongly doubt that a Pro would come that soon, or if it does it'll be well over $1k.

        • -3

Nintendo never cared about the price, they know their market is loyal and would pay regardless.

Highly doubt pro model is on the way. Oled upgrade is all Nintendo is gonna give

          • +1

            @krisspy:

they know their market is loyal and would pay regardless.

No, their fanboys are. That's not their entire market.

The 3DS received a massive price drop 5 months after launch. It sold great the first week (because their fanboys will buy anything). Then the sales plummeted. They needed to slash the price win back their real market to save the console

            https://kotaku.com/nintendo-3ds-gets-sudden-massive-price-dr…

            History repeats itself…

      • +1

This is the improved Switch already; you’ll be waiting a while for any updates…

      • +2

Bloody hell, the Switch 2 isn't even out yet and we're already getting the rumours of a Pro model that seemed to kick off for the Switch 1 about a year after launch.

And no, I don't consider the OLED version a 'pro' with no improved performance.

        • +1

Don't waste your time with the pro, wait for Switch 3.

      • There might be an OLED model with improved battery life. A company that goes out of it's way to have backward compatibility isn't going to release a higher performance 'pro' model, it's the complete opposite of their strategy.

      • +2

"I agree, for the price and specs it is not good value."

        delusional

it is literally 10x faster for graphics than the OG Switch due to 6x faster HW + DLSS

bigger, brighter, HDR, 120hz, VRR screen
        active fan dock
it is a massive upgrade, between PS4 and PS4 Pro graphics

3rd party support will be much improved over OG Switch, anything non PS5 exclusive will also be released on the S2

this thing will be selling till 2035

    • +1

      lol

    • +6

Yeah nah it will do much better than the Wii U.

      • -5

Mr toad is just coping hard as usual 😅

        • Do you even know what coping means? I'm predicting something about video games because it's fun to try and guess these things.

I'm not "coping" about something as unimportant as video games. If the Switch 2 is a great success in a year's time I'll be fine being wrong.

          • +2

@PainToad: "as usual" as well, as though youi're not active on here all the time, in a bunch of different category deals, usually offering advice moreso than opinions to boot.

Gotta back Mr. Toad on this one. I don't think the Switch 2 will be anything like the Wii U in sales, but I don't think we've got another Wii or Switch 1 on our hands either. Definitely fun to speculate though. Shame the Wii U didn't take off, now we have Sony selling a device that exists solely to do what the Wii U gamepad did, but worse (WiFi rather than direct connection), for 330 bucks, in addition to the 750 800 830 you spent on a PS5, when the whole (profanity) Wii U only cost around 300.

    • I'd tend to agree.

I'm honestly shocked people are down voting you and ok with the price. As others mention, for the same price you can literally just buy a steam deck and play Nintendo games as well as steam games, Playstation Etc.

Not sure what the value proposition here besides just blindly buying Nintendo hardware to play 1 or 2 games a year.

    • +4

Hey, I liked my Wii U!

      • +3

Me too. But it doesn’t change the fact it was a commercial flop.

      • +1

Yeap, so easy to mod too.

        • Oh yeah.

  • +22

Considering the Shopback terms excludes 'Playstation 5, Playstation 5 Digital Edition and Xbox Series X 1TB', it will most likely excludes Switch 2 (but just hasn't been updated).

    • Agreed

    • They sell the Switch 1 though and it's not on that list though. Need rep to confirm for sure but no answer yet.

    • +2

I'm not taking this deal, but what are the prospects of screenshotting the terms and arguing that the Switch 2 was not excluded at the time of purchase if they reject the cashback?

I remember that CBA cashback app was pretty good at honouring cashbacks in such circumstances. Maybe that's why it didn't last though.

      • +1

You should 100% be able to argue, and win in those circumstances. You abided by the terms and conditions at the time of the transaction.

  • +4

    $580 is pretty wild

    • ok i'm curious, what's the context here?

      • +1

It being quite a decent amount cheaper than the $699 RRP lol

  • +30

    Few weeks after the release

"Shopback rejected my cashback, anyone has the same experience?"

    • Yeah I'm gonna return it to good guys if the cashback gets rejected….. as I am not paying RRP

  • +2

Thankfully i still have my nintendo Wii

  • +1

This console will have companies running it as a loss leader to get the games/accessories sales. My bet is on HN or JB

    • +1

      Big W.

      • Woolworths yes, another good contender.

Ebay too maybe in one of those ebay+ deals where they have 200 units

  • +3

    That is no deal.

    • +6

Wow. So edgy. Border patrol might even consider you as a weapon.

  • Any deals on the original Nintendo Switch? Never owned one before and always thought about it, seems like now might be a good time to pick up the old model.

    • +4

There will be plenty of cheap second hand models available now the new one has been released

    • You can often pick up a good condition Switch Lite for close to $100 on Marketplace.

    • if you've waited this long, consider emulation if you have a powerful enough pc

    • +1

Consider going for an early model with a hackable serial number.

      • How do you find which serial is hackable?

I bought the SW1 near launch.

        • there's a website to check just Google it

it'll be like the serial or model number

yeah pretty sure hac-001 or whatever something is sw1

  • +3

    Still waiting for Amazon AU

  • +13

    RRP

    • -2

I gave you a neg because the correct comment is

'What is this? Is this site called OzRRP now?'

  • Has any rep confirmed it is not excluded from cashback??

    • Not yet no. I did tag them last night but nothing yet. Maybe again? @gotyourback

    • +1

If its not in t&c's how can they legally reject it?

      • -1

They can just update the T&C

        • +1

Take a screenshot at the time of purchase. T&Cs are legally relevant then.

          • +2

@cnut: There is a catchall "Any exceptions will be at the store's discretion", you can never win with these people.

            • @siruba: That wouldn't hold up in court… But yeah, who's going to take them to court over a Nintendo switch cashback.

  • +4

Just wait for Xmas, the hot deals will come when it doesn’t sell out. Not many AAA Switch 2 games available now anyway.

    • Christmas is time to get a second one haha.

  • I think the opposite. If you look at the YouTube jokers the performance is between the PS4 and ps5. Some games hard to tell difference vs ps5.and it's portable. But in playability Nintendo has a massive following with Nintendo only games and it's still getting many mainstream ones ported across.
I think many of the top Xbox games like Diablo IV are very similar to each other. Spinning and chopping enemies a million times. Can make an argument that Nintendo is more fun.

    • -1

Between ps4 and ps5? The games so far look poor graphically, and a lot of multi platforms like Elden ring will be 30 fps. So it’s below ps4 pro and no where near the ps5. Lots of games in the direct look like inferior to ps4 even. Such a poor upgrade after this many years, hard pass.

      • -1

Yeah let's see, it's interesting because the gpu has less raw grunt than ps5 but new nvidia features.
Nintendo say 10 times the power of switch one but no idea how they say that because obviously I haven't seen it.
        https://youtu.be/T0L0ULosUAc?t=115

        • -1

Nvidia said that - Not Nintendo.

"10 times" the power is classic Nvidia slop.
But yeah, the Switch 2 eats the PS4 up and a portable system running with like 10+ times less power draw than the PS4 while being better in every comparable aspect is insane.

Beats the Steam Deck in all current comparisons too.

Gonna be great for all the exclusives.

  • I pre-orded with the GGuys when they had 12% cashback with Top Cashback a few weeks back. Not a Westpac member but this is a nice deal, and then you look to sell your OG or OLED switch privately.

Wouldn't let me choose pickup though when pre-ordering so I'm going to ring my nearest store closer to release date rather than getting it a week later.

I use the Switch really only for Nintendo, basically Mario exclusives so Mario Kart World and DK Bananza is a good start. Switch one is barely playable now next to my Series X and Ps5 Pro, so keen for a newer one but it won't be the main system I play.

  • -3

Hope to see lots of second hand Switch 2 consoles on the market.

    • Sure, in 2027 onwards probably.

  • I think a lot of people are writing off the system weirdly enough. It's very likely if not certain to be not nearly as successful as OG Switch - the novelty of the hybrid system isn't there anymore. But to say it'll be Wii U levels of sub 20 million is a very doom and gloom kind of prediction - the OG Switch sold incredibly well (over 150m units and still growing), why wouldn't they iterate on it. Even the 3DS which wasn't nearly as popular as the OG Nintendo DS sold just under 80m by the end, its games didn't look as good as its competitor the PS Vita, but that system flopped instead.

    • I agree and all,

But another thing the Switch 2 and Vita have in common? Mad expensive memory cards. People point to the Vita cards are being a huge reason it didn't take off. Mer personally, I got by with the cheapest 4gb card for a good while, but most aren't as cheap as I.

      • +1

It's a fair point, but the much faster read speeds from the MicroSD Express are a necessity - the regular MicroSD cards weren't going to cut it for Switch 2 - it's getting Cyberpunk 2077 after all, including Phantom Liberty expansion, which was dropped from the PS4 version even after all the optimisation post launch due to its slow HDD. At least its not proprietary storage like with the Vita (with the highest 64GB storage cards more prone to failure even!), not to mention Switch 2 comes with 256GB to begin with.

        • Absolutely. I ended up rushing out to change the baby and cut myself short before. The Switch has expensive memory cards, this they share, but that's about it. The Vita had zero internal storage (yes, the slim and PSTV had 1gb, I know), so even saving your game was impossible. 256gb is a lot more than nothing, it's a lot more than the 32 on Switch 1, and it's ideally going to be a lot in general since Nintendo is one of the very few companies that actually compress their games still. In terms of future proofing, it makes sense to use Express, I do wish they allowed for standard Micro SD cards for back compat stuff though. Prices will (ideally) fall and the cards will get more affordable, and everything else you say is true too,

          BUT

I can play Spider-Man on Steam Deck entirely off a cheap ass standard Micro SD fine with no massive load times. I can even play select Series S/X games off a Micro SD in a USB adapter such as Star Wars Squadrons, Descenders, and even Halo: The Master Chief Collection, which all load faster than the standard HDD of the PS4/Xbox One gen. I think it's good for the sake of future proofing the Switch 2, I'd love even more if I could play all my old shit and all the supported new shit off a significantly cheaper and larger standard Micro SD that I already have in a drawer somewhereTM.

        • It's a fair point, but the much faster read speeds from the MicroSD Express are a necessity - the regular MicroSD cards weren't going to cut it for Switch 2 - it's getting Cyberpunk 2077 after all,

Average Mum and Dads buying Switches for their kids don't understand or care about the technical reasons. All they see is the price.

I wish Nintendo still made a "core" home console (NES, SNES, N64 etc.) and a cheaper true portable (GB, GBA, DS etc.) with unique games that best suit each device. $150 for a Gameboy like device is a great intro to gaming for kids. Anbernic is filling the whole Nintendo left.

  • +12

Just want to post that I got a confirmation that the promo is valid
    https://imgur.com/a/uI0x4We

    • Great! Thank you

    • Legend!

  • At least it comes with 256gb. Mario kart is 23gb and donkey kong is 10gb for example. Better than switch one.
I think you live and learn. They've obviously thought about all these issues at Nintendo and spent a lot of time on it so I'd be very surprised if it's a dud.
The Japanese do that. Check out the first Toyotas from many years ago :)
It's low risk to preorder then flog it if you don't like it imo.

  • I was thinking of pre ordering but it says estimated delivery 10 June for me, i can’t wait that long!

  • I get a 'sorry, we can't find that page' whenever I try to pay.

    • Same, along with a pop-up that says "only purchases on The Good Guys website qualifies for cashback". I wonder if "purchases" is the keyword (vs pre-order).

edit: got the above error on Android app but it works on iOS.

    • I was getting the same error, I then did the transaction through my desktop and the cashback tracked.
