Wouldn't go near Centrecom after my last order experience. Never responded to emails, sat on my order for 3 weeks after item was showing in stock online and in their stores, then finally they cancelled my order without a word of explanation or apology. Then sat on a refund for over a week, and I only got one after initiating a PayPal dispute (close the 45 day limit for initiating disputes). Never again; should have listened to the negative experiences on Whirlpool.

    Here's a price comparison between Centrecom/MSY…

    http://bit.ly/15uHCAT (Google Docs Spreadsheet)

Prices are similar depending on what you're looking to grab… bigger price difference for others.

In the end, the free shipping may or may not work out for you depending on convenience.

Doesn't say what kind of shipping you get though, whether it's next day express or cheapo postage so YMMV.

Not the worst deal, but certainly not the best…

tl;dr Everything is cheaper at MSY but if you like free shipping then this might be alright for you.

Well done, looks like the 4430 or the 4770 are the best buy.

Depends on what you need it for… I'd say a non-K CPU and a Z chipset motherboard (which is only what Centrecom are offering) is a VERY poor choice to make.

You can't overclock a non-K series CPU, which puts the motherboard to waste. You could save more money if you bought a B85/B87/H87 motherboard from MSY (or else where if the price is right) to go with a non-K series CPU. Just makes more sense.

But if you do buy a K-series CPU from Centrecom then you're getting gouged on the price… It better be next day shipping or close to it. ;)

*Not here to spruik MSY, it's just that (ironically) its price PDF is the easiest thing to use to draw a rough comparison between prices, rather than having to StaticIce everything (I'll leave that to some other brave soul). :P

I wouldn't rush out to buy a Haswell desktop CPU as they aren't much faster than Ivy Bridge and the improvements in power performance are more important to laptops.

I thought I'd give this a +1 anyway, since AFAICT it is the first Haswell post, and it at least indicates that there may be good deals on the Ivy Bridge CPUs coming up as Ivy Bridge isn't the latest and greatest anymore. I was about to post this in the forums and you saved me the effort ;).

  • I have a i5-3570 - what's the difference with this chip?

    • -2

Well, they are offering a number of different Haswell chips. The i7 4770 should be much faster at multithreaded tasks (because it is an i7) and more power efficient (because it is 4th generation).

The jump in performance from SB/IB to Haswell really isn't worth the money.
Haswell is around 10% faster than IB, more power efficient when idle but not when under load. If you already have a chip from the last two gens I wouldn't bother with the upgrade.
If you are looking to buy a new PC it might be worth looking into, especially if the "Australia tax" comes down a bit.

This may give you a better idea of the differences

Really need to wait for a while after release to get more accurate figures.

But I think in your position I would stick with my current CPU.
I still have a i5 2500K which is second gen and I'll be sticking with it until the next release might throw some more ram at it but that's about it.

Every single CPU is available at MSY cheaper as well as other stores.

Prices compared on Staticice, one example.

4770K $384 @ MSY Pickup or + $14.41 Postage to my address cheaper to Syd etc.

    SPAM!

    MSY is cheaper
not sure why is this "centrecom advertisement" allowed here?

    • Perhaps it should be moved to the forums? I think this is the first mention of Haswell being available for sale, which is of interest though not really a "bargain".
