Unless Microsoft decide to fully absorb RT related losses (in other words - junk the stock)(which they may do) , there must otherwise come a real day of reckoning pricewise. If not from them, then from others.
    This price ain't it.
Still, if you've weighed your current options and needs, I suppose this will be a sufficient deal for some. Maybe…

    • I plussed your comment before I got to the last Para, and I have to say I still don't think this is a deal worth worrying about while there are full W8 tabs to be had for $100 less. Even if this comes with a keyboard its not worthwhile simply because the app store isn't mature enough yet. I tried to get a decent TED app and couldn't, so it was back to good ole win32

This price is the same as Harvey Norman's… in fact HN is cheaper (by one whole dollar). Never thought i'd say HN and cheap in the same sentence…

Funny thing is… staticice is show this to go for aroun $550+ yet HN is below that…

EDIT LOL the HN site says free pick up from stores, yet it wont allow for pick up… Oh HN, you so funny.

    • wow you are right didn't even think to check if HN was cheaper. I guess you can get this deal if you don't want to support the scum at HN.

      • Yeah, i didn't actually think HN would be cheaper… it just popped up when i was looking at the review from your post. Still this price for a tablet is kinda a rip…

Of cause i don't see a point to tablets most of the time, i'd rather get a phablet (GS Note 3 or something).

      • You both must of missed the OZBargain posting advising the price drop at Hardley Normals

        • …Hardley Normals

LOL, and yeah i didn't know there was another post.

I feel sorry for those that purchase the RT and expect more.

It is actually a great tablet I really don't understand the negative views people have on it. It serves a different purpose to an ipad or android tablets, it is largely for productivity. You can play games and stuff on it too but obviously the app selection is limited. But it has a file explorer, it has expandable memory and the new internet explorer browser is actually amazing for surfing the net especially since it also has flash support.

The negative reviews stem from the fact that the OS has no real benefits over the Pro version. If you want a productivity based system, then Windows Pro is a better option as you get full access to traditional desktop apps. This version is stuck in limbo between the iPad and Android tablets and Windows Pro without itself being in any sort of 'best of both worlds' situation.

Ultimatelty many people see it as useless in a worlds where Windows Pro tablets exist.

I humbly agree with this view.

It would be lovely for there to be a greater breadth and depth of applications available, yet this is still a wonderful tool.

In contrast to others, I like the touch cover. It does not perform to the same level as a real keyboard, but I would have purchased a type cover if that had been more important for my purposes.

I am very happy that I have been able to expand the onboard 32GB of storage (of my base-level unit) with 64GB of readily-exchangeable microSD storage, along with another 32GB of readily-exchangeable unobtrusive USB storage (in the form of http://www.sandisk.com.au/products/usb/drives/cruzer-fit/).

Again, there is definitely a shortage of 3rd-party applications. Still, this is a beautiful piece of equipment. The resolution certainly isn't retina-level, but it is a good screen. I do find the audio quality of the speakers to be far better than the iPad.

My primary computer device remains a MacBook Pro. That is because I feel that it is the best unit for my needs. My primary tablet device remains a Surface RT. That is because I feel that it is the best unit for my needs (in contrast, I feel that the Surface Pro is a very different product, and it would not the a better unit for either my computing or tablet needs).

My jollies will most likely remain ungotten, irrespective of what sort of tablet anyone else chooses. I would just say that it most probably won't help you to pay much heed to people who offer outright condemnation that is more to do with issues of taste and preference.

The market has spoken on RT. Technicalities aside, there's more than a slight irony that RT stands for 'Run Time'. Time is almost up.

      • Thanks for the negs. Charming. Look, I'm not saying that RT tabs are useless or without their virtues, but even as a midrange device they were ill conceived and promoted.

Practical battery life and performance were hugely exaggerated, and as a touted bridge 'productivity' device, the programs they can't run has become a huge issue and unexpected disappointment for people all around the world who bought them.

Oh, and as far as I'm concerned it remains a bloody scandal that Microsoft ever had the gall to sell a 32GB device - with virtually no remaining internal space at all courtesy of the OS.

        • I am guessing people aren't just begging you because of your stance, but that they would prefer specific reasons rather than generalization about the market. However…

I agree with you wholly. The device was supposed to be a bridge, but when the right app isn't available you have no recourse. Which means you'll be reaching for that notebook all the more often, which defeats the purpose of having a slim and stylish device that you can take places while leaving your notebook at home.

oh and I also don't know what people do for space, I was amazed when I found my w510 had only 32 of its 64 GB free. Realistically would be a great device at the price of a chromebook for those who must have office and can compromise elsewhere

  • Yep, if before the whole RT shebang gets pulled totally the price gets keen enough, even I might buy one, and that's despite the saga leaving such a bad taste in the mouth.

Ultimately, after all of the hype (and the delays), Microsoft still managed a rush to market. A too abbreviated operating system and a pretty obvious attempted customer manipulation strategy that stank of 'Let's just see how many different devices we can get the punters to buy'…
