  • I've bought USA retail version of these and they have never come with 4 different plug adaptors, so it may be necessary to get some for these…

  • the one i bought from Officeworks came with it ( have 2, expansion and go flex )

    • That's the Australian version at Officeworks. This here being sold is shipping from the UK so it will be the UK version. It says in the details it comes with the UK plug.

      • Just check with them if you are getting it . They should provide it . Or always can grab an adapter plug for couple of bucks from eBay

  • +1

Well i bought one, also got a cheap UK-AU plug off ebay for $2.50 - Win for me.

    • +1

Would you really trust a $2.50 UK-AU plug coming from Hong Kong?. I'd rather trust one of those $10 mains adaptors from Jaycar.

      http://www.jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?ID=PP4027

      • +4

Yes, they have always served me well. This drive is going to be used as backup so its only going to be used a few times a month if that and unplugged in a box otherwise. So why would I bother paying $40 for a locally sourced, expensive, earthed and converted plug? Just the way I look at it. Call it the ozbargainer spirit.

        • +1

Locally sourced UK-AU earthed mains adaptor plug is $10 actually. You're over exaggerating the price. Did you even look at the link to Jaycar that i posted?.

At least you know it's Australian certified.

        • +6

I said expensive, and with a converter to 120w (UK standards). But thats not the point. Why spend more when I can spend less? Shame!

And stop editing your posts to make me look like an idiot. At first you made no reference to Jaycar in either of your posts and changed them while i was replying.

        • +3

The UK uses the same 240v power voltage as in Australia so there's no power converting.

It's the USA that uses 120v power.

        • +1

Touche on that I guess. Still, I saved 75%.

      • +1

        That's $1.50 too much, these are $1.00 delivered -
        http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/UK-US-EU-Universal-to-AU-AC-Power…

        • Sorry should have elaborated. It was a 2 pack with a warehouse in sydney so I didnt have to wait a month for them to come.

      • Yes I would. They just have conductors, no other electrical parts inside. And I bought them for the equivalent of $1 while I was there.

        • And some wires. There could be a loose wire causes by dodgy manufacturing in one of those cheap quality adaptors which could short circuit.

        • +3

No wires. Just formed metal blades. You obviously haven't looked inside one of those things.

Also wanted to add that one can use an adaptor for another external disk if the voltage is the same (usually 12V) and at least as much current capability. I'm using the same adaptor for two disks, not at the same time of course.

        • I personally use lots of these converter/adapter
not all china made are in acceptable quality
some does cause problem such as casing fire or electric sparks(which WILL cause fire)
it actually happened to me personally from a few that bought on eBay

        • You probably mean the ones that convert voltage if you are talking about a "case". These are just pieces of metal inside a plastic plug, like the double adaptors you buy here. Now if you were to run a room heater through an adaptor that would be a bit unwise. But an external HD only takes a few watts.

        • no, I do meant one of these
          http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/330627199288
some are badly produce in those cheap "china made" adapters
it has loose connector inside that does make arcing(which is some electric spark thingy)

          quote from hammerzone.com
It's common to find 20 or 30 year old outlets that are so loose that a cord barely stays in place. This isn't just a nuisance, this is a hazard. Loose-fitting plugs can arc, which is essentially small-scale lightning. Arcing will create heat, and if the arcing is bad enough the heat can melt the surrounding wiring and start a fire. I've seen it happen.

I said it before on ozbargain
I remember reading some news/warning notice somewhere about these adapter,
as they did not pass Australian standard and might cause fire danger!
(and yes, personally I've seen power adapter smoke & blew up in front of me by using one of these adapters)

      • +8

Literally a piece of metal. While the purity and electrical characteristics of the metal bridging the gap may matter if your trying to run a synchrotron, this is a hard drive. It'll hold Sheila

      • .

    • True

  • got one in HK & it came with 4 plugs.

    • Comes from asia pacific which is obviously from a different batch compared to what the UK gets.

  • +1

I do heaps of shopping online , most of them from China , Hong Kong , some from UK . Never had issues with them . And shopping is free too , even for a $2 ink . That's bargain .

  • anyone know what hdd is inside?

    • +1

Be fairly safe the HDD brand would be Seagate. Going by experience the Seagate Expansion 2TB drives came with the ST2000DM001 HDD. I'd think the 3TB Expansion drives would have the Barracuda 3TB ST3000DM001 7200rpm HDD inside of the enclosure.

      • +1

Yep, that's the drive inside the Australian stock item I have. BTW, opening it without snapping the case clips is tricky.

  • Could you open & put in a pc or media player instead.

    • +1

Think you can , have done in past

    • Yes the drives have the normal SATA connectors. The internal drive is no different to what the Barracuda ST3000DM001 drives bought from PC shops.

  • +1

Great find, thanks for posting. Populating microserver!

  • I wonder if the drives inside these are the same as the 3TB GoBlex barracuda drives.. i wanna raid them if same.

  • Anyone know the model no.?

  • +2

my first ever external hd…can't wait for it to get here :D

  • Not sure about these, but my 2TB Seagate Expansion drive had a 5400rpm Seagate disk inside. I doubt they'd put 7200rpm Barracuda disks in these 3TB expansion drives, especially considering the price.

    • The 3tb one I bought from officeworks last time it was cheap (price matched JB's one), it has a 7200rpm barracuda inside. Not sure if the UK stock would be different, I doubt it.

      • Looks like its kind of hit or miss as to the type of drive they put in these - according to this post on the Seagate forums (http://forums.seagate.com/t5/Other-External-products/Cant-fi…).

Dude emailed Seagate requesting drive specs on the older Seagate 3TB Expansion and received this reply…

"As to the Seagate Expansion External 3TB drive, we do not display the spin speed or the kind of drive in the case. The only way we can tell what is in the case is by the serial number. Most of the expansion drives are usually 5400 rpm speeds."

If you're lucky enough to score a 7200rpm Barracuda then hats off :)

  • Also, does anyone know if these are covered under worldwide warranty? Or would you have to ship it back to the UK for warranty replacement/repair?

  • +1

Has anyone attempted a pricematch at officeworks?

  • -1

I've been told seagates are unreliable. Stop working in a year or so :/
Then again, one person told me he's had his seagate for years with no problems.

Also, @yaajirobe, re-read OP. I'm guessing he's tried. Though I should point out that the conditions for a price-match are 'in Australia' and 'has a store-front' (i.e. is a physical store, rather than just online)

  • OW price match Aussie stores only.

    • Wrong , they even do Amazon. Don't believe Try it yourself. So take this and you get ozbargained at Ow .

      • +1

No. You are not entirely correct. Some staff or managers set their own price beat policies. The dodgy OW in Subiaco even refused to price beat HN.

        • they should be reported , i have pricematched with amazon and most of the online shops . if they say no they are in trouble . TRUST ME

        • Not sure if they will price match with a coupon either.

        • I did email my complaint to OW emphasising please explain the reason for unable to price beat so I can forward your email in writing to Consumer Protection for further investigation. Six months since then no reply yet.

  • Reckon stock is in OZ? Had my 2TB die and don't want to be waiting a long time….

    • They ship from their factory in the UK, so it's not Oz stock

  • would advise people to stay clear of Seagate as it appears their firmware bug issues that plagued the older gen 11 are surfacing in newer models.

  • Has anyone successfully price matched these at OW yet?

    • call your closest store , they should do it (according to price match policy ). This is a clear win

  • +1

using seagate for over 15 years , never had issues with them , 3 WD s died in between , 1 seagate (DOA). Win for seagate for me

  • Price update: $113.19 after 20% discount.

  • Original price changed while I trying to do deal (which looks as though has finished) from $141.99 to now $163.99… No Discount now…

  • Website is no longer offering the price. Can someone who bought this please post their receipt?

    Many thanks

  • Thanks for the info , marked as expired
