Dell Inspiron 15R Special Edition $999 - Opinion?

I need to get a replacement laptop soon. Does anyone have any opinion on Dell?

I am looking at this one for $999:

  • 1920x1080 screen
  • 8GB RAM
  • 1TB hard disk + 32 GB cache
  • i7 + AMD HD 7730M

It has bluray drive but I don't need that.
I'm mainly after HD+ screen and hybrid HD (or 250GB SSD).
$999 doesn't feel like a bargain but I don't feel like waiting.

  • They used to be rubbish, but over the last 5 years or so, they have really picked up their act. I have a 17R SE, and it's pretty good. I've also been buying latitudes for work for ~10 years..

I'd suggest making sure you get home warranty support though.

  • Check out the Vostro 3560. Currently $779 on sale (although sale ends tonight).

    3rd Generation Intel® Core™ i7-3632QM processor (6M Cache, up to 3.2 GHz)
    Windows® 7 Professional SP1 64bit (English)
    15.6 inch Wide Display FHD (1920x1080) w/anti-glare
    8GB DDR3 SO-DIMM AT 1600MHz - 2X4GB
500GB 7200RPM SATA HDD Drive with 32G mSata
    AMD Radeon™ HD 7670M 1GB DDR3

Very tempted by this/the XPS 15 however after reading the online reviews for the XPS 15 I think i'll stay away(its a real shame as it's basically exactly what I was looking for).

May have to keep on waiting until something else similar comes along………

    • looks like a better deal. you're a better shopper than me. windows 8 or 7?

      • i got windows 7 because it was $20 cheaper. I'm starting to regret that decision… don't think I can change my order though.

    • Adding to that the Vostro line comes with Dell's NBD on-site support which is pretty amazing in itself.

    • Don't get this. I've got one very similar to these from work (Vostro 3550). Pretty horrendous build quality. Very plastic-ey feel to it. Although, the keyboard is decent and has a backlight.

It also has a hacked-on USB 3 controller that has some issues with wireless input devices. When you're doing a USB3 transfer of something large, it will cause keystroke lag and dropouts (bloody annoying!).

The switchable graphics causes a fair bit of annoyances… also you need to mucking about a little if you need to run any flavour of linux with this (because of the switchable graphics).

      Definitely not recommended!

  • It certainly ticks all the boxes and seems a good price - but get the in-home warranty unless you live near their service centre.

I couldn't find a $999 Inspiron SE with mSata SSD. What is the url?

  • +1

There's a couple of new 15R SEs available on the Dell Outlet:
    - $799 NO Blu-ray (DFO-2199024IP)
    - $839 with Blu-ray (DFO-2165713IP)

  • just beware of the size. They are huge compare to normal laptop but the specs are good as a desk replacement.

    • You talking about the 17 SE? I've got the 15r SE and doesn't seem huge to me. Unless you are comparing it to an ultrabook

      • my 17SE feels big i know that…..lucky i use it beside my bed only :)

  • $1000 is about the lowest price you are going to get a FHD screen at. Also look at Asus' R501VM-S4142H which packs 4x USB3 ports, but a weaker GT630 and only 750GB HDD.

I also couldn't find the dell deal with the option to put on a FHD panel.

  • Dell website is so confusing, this Dell Inspiron 15R SE is $799.

whats the difference between this one and the $999 apart from the screen? (I would be hooking it up to dual monitors most of the time anyway, so this is not a consideration)

    • As you noted, the $799 model has the lower spec screen (1366x768) but the laptop has HDMI v1.4a & VGA so should run 2 monitors (providing they are no bigger than 24", especially with VGA).

It's also missing the Blu-ray player and 32GB mSATA drive.

      • Cheers

  • I've had my 15r se for almost a year now and have had no issues with it. Build is pretty solid and drivers are stable (windows 7). Cheap for the features/performance it has am still happy with my purchase
