lol, at all the previous people using their domain. I couldn't even use f#[email protected] as it was already taken.

Just put in anything to proceed … and then it doesn't even take me to the deal.

  • wow delivery takes a month…winter 2014 maybe ;)

  • BTW Where to you get ethanol fuel ?

    or is Metho ethanol ?

    • +3

Denatured Ethanol is commonly called Methylated Spirits. So every hardware store has it.

Generally ~$3.50/l, depending on the volume you buy.

Here's a place that sells in bulk.

Ethanol Fireplaces Pro’s and Con’s - in short, they are expensive light shows that will make you go broke if you try to heat your house with one. Plus there's a chance you'll suffocate or it'll burst into flames.

They also make excellent gifts for that guy you hate at work. He can't park in your spot if he bursts into flames the night before.

    • To add to that, methylated spirits is about 90% ethanol, about 10% methanol and other substances to make it undrinkable (or people would go blind from the methanol). Gory details at Wikipedia.

It's an expensive way to heat so this is only for novelty value. I pass.

      • Not any more. They stopped adding methanol long ago, since people drank it anyway.

        • +1

Only in some countries. The methanol was to prevent easy distillation of the ethanol. The additives were to discourage potation.

        • +2

I was wrong. some brands in Australia still contain methanol, though in smaller quantities.
You have to look at the MSDS to find out.

        • MSDS? Bored safety officer if ever I saw one.

  • You will be singing;

We havin’ a celebration, love to stay high
We havin’ a celebration, love to stay high

  • Ei wouldnt like to be inhaling ethanol fumes.

    • I guess if you inhale enough CO2 you could get a bit of a headache. And if you condense the water vapour and inhale that, you'll be in all sorts of trouble.

      C2H5OH + 3 O2 -> 3 C02 + 3 H2O

Possibly the cleanest burning fuel you can get…

i just pour petrol over the top of my table and toss a match onto it

Real, flickering flames create comforting heat and a warm ambience.

No way! Ethanol flames are almost invisible, and more blue than anything. Pic is fake, and post dishonest.

    • We have the free standing version. The flames are real and easily visible, not blue at all, same colour as a burning candle, although we only used it at night, when it's cold….didn't use it on a sunny day, when it's warm……

One litre of the same brand ethanol is $15 so pretty pricey.

      From race fuels :

      200litres @ $2.50 per litre = $500 inc GST

      20litres @ $3.00 per litre = $60 inc GST

      • OK, thanks. Still sounds dangerous.

I'm used to metho stoves which have a very dim flame.
Think what brandy looks like on fire on food - you need to turn the lights off to see it.

    • we have a similar one of these. Metho is $10.50 for 4 litres from BigW so $2.50 a litre. Quite expensive to run. They do start with a blue flame but soon settle down to a nice yellow flame. They are not the most effective heaters for the money, but ours does increase our temperature by 2 degrees, which takes the edge of the central heating (we always keep on 20 but on really cold nights it feels less than that) The ethanol heater is quite beautiful to look at (ours is wall mounted)and does add some heat. Also very clean burning. Tried to check out the deal but the fact you have to jump through so many hoops to see it turned me off, but it is a very good price for one of these.

Cant believe these are even for sale. Knock it over and your house is on fire.

    • Saw that happen once with a truck and a kero heater…was a brick and glass built warehouse…scary to watch
as it grew -windows popping within minutes…place had to be gutted inside.

(fire station only 2/3 klms away too)

    • Cant believe these are even for sale. Knock it over and your house is on fire.

Clearly they are on sale…. and probably would set your house on fire if you knocked it over….

That said…. Is your neg based on the fact that you've seen them cheaper, or have the product and know there is something wrong with it, or have information about the retailer?

Or is it just because you personally don't like the idea?

  • We use metho as an auxiliary heat source for really cold mornings, the flames are visible with large orange tongues flickering, they add quite significant heat as a booster the best part is that the air you breathe in is warmed and makes you feel warmer fast.
We use 3 large stainless steel cups in an old wood heater, and usually only need one lit unless around zero, guestimating and seeing the effect on temperature they would be roughly 1kw per cup burning but the heated air feels much more.
