[VIC - Southbank] Free Movies at Southgate Cinema in May

120

THE NEW SOUTHGATE CINEMA.

Southgate is pleased to announce another season of films at one of Melbourne’s newest attractions. Come and enjoy a range of quality films at the unique Southgate Cinema. Best of all, its free!

The cinema experience

The Southgate Cinema is unique to Melbourne in many ways. It provides an outdoor experience while remaining undercover inside the centre, rug up and get cosy relaxing back in a deck chair under the open atrium and watch the city sky fade away.

The Cinema is also Melbourne’s only silent cinema – patrons are provided with individual headphones and audio kits to listen to the film, while sitting back and relaxing amidst the hustle and bustle of the restaurant and shopping precinct.

As each film begins after dusk, patrons can enjoy dinner, drinks or browse through Southgate’s retail stores before each movie commences. Many restaurants have express dining offers which cater to pre-theatre and movie patrons, allowing you time to meet with friends and catch up before the movie commences.

Bookings and screening times

Southgate Cinema runs every Tuesday and Wednesday evening. Movies commence at dusk. Check the times listed in the film descriptions on the current program.

Patrons with pre-booked tickets are required to check-in an hour before each film commences. The ticket desk is open two hours before film commencement and any tickets not claimed 30 minutes before film commencement may be re-released to waiting patrons.

The films

The programming is released seasonally, with program bookings being announced in advance to Southgate Taste.Savour.Celebrate. subscribers.

Did this earlier in the year. Comfortable seats and good experience. Bring your own headphones. All seats are given Sennheiser wireless dongles connected to cheapo headphones. You can just plug your own headphones into the dongle.

Pic before a few minutes before it got dark

    • That looks….strange. How dark does it actually get? Would you recommend it?

      • It gets darker. The picture doesn't do it justice. That was also before DST. Not as dark as a cinema but dark enough in that section. I highly recommend it. I mean it's free, the seats are comfortable and my lady enjoyed it. Downside was she/we got hungry/thirsty and spent money at the Lindt cafe/food court below. Freebie negated :(.

  • All current sessions are booked out except for "Divine Secrets of the YaYa Sisterhood".

You can still turn up on the day for any unclaimed tickets.

  • Thank Op. Only movies still available is Divine Secrets of the YaYa Sisterhood. All other tickets are gone.

I was researching this a bit when organizing the Melbourne Meetup. Apparently, on average, for free events especially as it's automated, 50% of people are no shows. I would just rock up on the day and try your luck.

Oh, one other thing to mention. You need to bring ID as you give it to them in exchange for the wireless headphone unit.
