Laptop for travelling to Asia

Hello All,

I was wondering if anyone had suggestions for a laptop to take travelling,

Id be looking to pay less than a grand and to be fairly portable as i'll be moving to many different locations

something as a bargain would be nice too - but even a good suggestion for a computer is useful

Go for an Apple MacBook Air 11 inch running Windows (via Bootcamp) - just over a $1,000 for the 128GB model when they have 10% off the RRP of $1,249. Best of both systems - OSX and Windows in a thin and light form factor with good computing power to complete most tasks.

I have the same set-up as I travel a lot for work and since buying one in 2010, have been hooked and buying each new generation as they are released.

    Good luck and enjoy!

    • thanks for the suggestion, I can get employee discount on that but I think i'd prefer something with just win 7/8 as I most likely wouldn't use OSX

I have stopped taking my laptop (Compaq Presario CQ41-209AU Notebook PC)as I find a tablet much better for travelling.

Of course I needed that to have usb / hdmi / 4G simslot / 10 hours plus on battery and an expansion slot, which I got, all for about $200 delivered.

    It's about 470 grams
    And its waterproof.

Thanks for all the details, but not mention which tablet you got. I'd leave my Compaq at home too lol.

    • what tablet?

      • in Asia…only one Imodium
        ;)

      • edit: nvm

      • I went travelling with mt TF300T + dock. Works great for everything I needed it for. Sending emails, watching videos, browsing internet and viewing pictures. Plus it has a SD slot to put photos on, edit them easily and save them to an external hard drive if needed. Plus ultra compact, fits in any bag easily.

    • Not from DX, surely?

  • Pantech Element bought off of ebay sent to hopshopgo address and forwarded here.

  • You should buy the W110ER which is the world's fastest 11.6" gaming laptop and it's only 1.8 KG. Clevo laptops offer the best bang for buck IMHO.

    • That's pretty good except for having no OS, and 11.6" is a bit on the small side for a laptop.

      • I always figured a smaller laptop was more ideal for travel. Actually I wouldnt travel with anything bigger, maybe 13" max.

    • Definitely best one for me I think, this looks awesome!

Cant be too hard to wack a win7 or 8 disc in

  • Nice target for theft thats for sure.

  • How long are you going for, and what do you need it for.

I have occasionally made do with an iPod, as it's small and does not ask to be stolen quite as much as a tablet/computer.

You can also charge it from batteries, use it as alarm clock etc

It's a pain to use, but you can get by . It's also nice to carry a HDMl adaptor for hotel to play movies, and in our case Changi airport :)

And if you are lugging it around, it can make quit a difference!

  • I'm going to Japan in june for 6 weeks. Instead of taking a laptop i've bought a Nexus 7 which i've unlocked and installed stickmount to Transfer files from my cameras SD card to a portable HDD without the need of a laptop. The process was rather involved but I think it'll be worth it in the long run to not have a bulky laptop in my bag.

I am dead happy with the z930 i got for travel, only a bit more than 1kg, intel 4k though, no dedicated option and 13.3 screen

and the 11.6 clevo rocks btw further up if you want a full dedicated + non ultrabook full throttle chip:), 11.6 is quite usable too

  • Probably worth finding out what the op plans on doing with it.
If its only for email, browsing, looking at a few saved documents, playing some movies and music, a laptop is not required at all.

Advantage for me of the tablet I mentioned earlier is the GPS and 4G sim allowing me to go exploring out and about in areas where the tourist maps and WIFI don't work.
Being waterproof, if caught out in rain its a non issue as well.

Laptop is hardly an option for doing that.

But if the OP needs to do actual work while on holiday or really must play BF3 (or similar) then I suppose a fast gaming laptop it is.
