    Truecrypt creates encrypted containers - file or partitions - which is then mounted as a drive. AFAIK it cannot directly encrypt a file/folder. It's fairly basic and might not suit advanced users, BUT it's very reliable, widely used and open-source.

  I use boxcryptor for this. Clients are available for several operating systems and it integrates with popular cloud storage to make it easy. Best part is that it encrypts only the file and its name so only the changed file is synced back to storage.

  And it's free for personal use.

  Or try encfs for a genuinely free software solution.

  Axcrypt is what I have been using since inception and it is automatic and unobtrusive, free/open source.
