  • how much carbon monoxide do you emit in your bedroom?

    • There have been leaks before and other issues however it's more common overseas.

I'm guessing that this is for people who use portable gas heaters without leaving a window open? This is a common cause of death in many countries. Most European countries prohibit the sale of such heaters as a result. In WA (not sure about other states) bayonets for such heaters can only be installed if there are two air ducts (one high, one low) in the wall. Most people aren't aware and operate these heaters without ventilation.
I think this is not a bad purchase for people with a portable gas heater.

    Thanks bought one.
Have one of those Korean gas cartridge heaters that makes me a little "nervous" so I hope this monitor works properly.

    • you use it inside?

      • +2

        Sometimes.
When I lived in Japan everyone. I mean everyone…all the gaigin used Kerosene heaters inside, every day. Totally normal modus operandi over there. Same with gas cartridge heaters in Korea.
I know that doesn't change the science of CO production, but we can be too slanted towards chicken little/super suck behavior in Australia. They can be used by responsible adults, with an understanding of what is going on re CO and have some ventilation and now… a CO meter.
So yeah, I use it inside…sometimes.

        • +2

          With a crack open for air I hope… :-)

        • Yep

        • Only if he's bending over!

        • Super Suck is in Sumbawa, Indonesia, but what does lower case mean before "behaviour"?

        • That's 2'55" of my life that I'll never get back, lol.

But perhaps it has helped, although I think that chicken little needs to be excluded from any attempt to define super suck. Chicken Little thought, incorrectly, that the sky was falling after being conked on the noggin* by an acorn. This avian fear mongerer may be deserving of contempt or ridicule, but it is hard to see that Supersuckers has been guilty of like behaviour in penning and performing a song. I continue to explore whether there exists a link between fading beauty and carbon monoxide acceptability.

*may be tautological, in that it may only be possible to be conked on the head as opposed to, say, a limb.

  • Will it detect cigarette smoke?

    • +1

Shouldn't. "The alarm points on carbon monoxide detectors are not a simple alarm level (as in smoke detectors) but are a concentration-time function. At lower concentrations (e.g. 100 parts per million) the detector will not sound an alarm for many tens of minutes. At 400 parts per million (PPM), the alarm will sound within a few minutes. This concentration-time function is intended to mimic the uptake of carbon monoxide in the body while also preventing false alarms due to relatively common sources of carbon monoxide such as cigarette smoke."

Cigarette combustion emissions do contain high level levels of CO. However, you would need to do some research as to whether one cigarette is likely to cause a localised concentration of CO of more than 50 parts per million. Even at that fairly low concentration, the device alarms within 60-90 minutes. The stop/start nature of smoking should mean that high concentrations are never reached.
