I researched the kindles only a few weeks back, as I was wanting to buy one for my grand daughter, the "Paperwhite" looked to be the best model, a better contrast than the other "grey" looking models.
I bought mine on ebay, but also Amazon.US delivers them to Australia for $145.00 total price.
At one point recently Woolworths had Kindle4s (no keyboard, wifi only) at their service counters (you had to ask for them) for $94. Might be worth trying if you want to just buy one in store.
If however you meant 'e-ink ebook readers generally' when you said 'kindle', then the kobo mini mentioned above for $49 is great value.
Best deal is a Kindle Paperwhite via Tenso/Japan.
It's a bit fiddly to setup, but you can get it landed in Australia for around $100-$110 (exchanrage rate is better now) It's much better than the $160+ retail.

Otherwise if you have Calibre and using the DRM tools, you can buy Kindle books and convert them - a bit fiddly, but doable.

Kobo Minireader is $49 @ JB HiFi.
ymmv. Fwiw, I have a Kindle 3 (keyboard), Kindle 3 (wifi+3g), 2 x Kindle4 in the household.
Paperwhite > Kindle3 > Kindle4.
The 5 way joystick kindles are fiddly to use in the Kindle 4.
Kindle 3 keyboard is good for wifi passwords and you can listen to audible books.
