  • great price was about to get one from Big W for $55

  • What do you use the WIFI for?

    • Downloading books from their store.

    • download books

      e-ink porn.

  • I had a kobo wifi a couple years ago and it's terribly slow comparing to my kindle2 released maybe 2 years earlier.

    • +1

Yeah but the Kobo Wifi was generally regarded as one of the worst Kobos out there. You can't compare it to newer kobo readers. I had the Mini for a short while back and its pretty good. Just that it does not have a SD card slot.

  • It's not very well reviewed (mainly compared to the Kindles) but for the price it is a real bargain.

  • 5" is bit too small for me, I like Kobo Glo more.

Just to let you know the Japanese amazon paperwhite kindles are down to 77 dollars each with the recent devaluation of the yen. I got two delivered for about 28 dollars via Tenso a fortnight ago. I dont know what the delivery charge is for one unit though. It got here in 4 working days.

    • cheers. I'm ordering two right now. one for myself and one for mother's day present.

    • Link please?

        amazon.co.jp
they do provide english page. just click it and it will switch to english

go to tenso.com/en/ then register they will give you an address.

The address can be found in my page when you need it and there is how to fill out the address on amazon.co.jp on the right hand side of the page

When you have registered with Tenso, using their address place an order
when Tenso receives it you'll be notified with an email

Well that's what i'm up to so far. I'm waiting for the email.

        • Tenso wants a scan of my driver licence for registration. I'm hesitant to send it though.

        • Its very normal in Japan and they're the one who reluctant to have business with us, that's why they're asking so many odd request.

    • Great price. I foolishly just bought one at Big W for 169…

    • Guessing around $20 just to ship one via Tenso?

    • Anyone placing an order for 2x Paperwhites from Amazon.jp want go halves with me? I only want 1.

    • What's the start up language when you first turn on one of these units from Japan?

      • $119 +shipping from Aus seller.

        http://www.eglobaldigitalcameras.com.au/amazon-kindle-paperw…

So, assuming $78 from JP Amazon + ~$30 shipping, you're not saving a whole lot off local pricing.

      • you can select english. language selection is the first thing that pops up i think.

        • Thanks, but is "English" written in English or will it be written in Japenese characters?

        • In any language selector ever done, the selections are always written in the local language. I challenge you to find one where it's not ;) ie "English" is written in English, "Japanese" is written in Japanese etc.

        • Sometimes you get flag icons.

    • Anyone having issues ordering the Paperwhite from Amazon.jp with 28Degrees card? It won't let me order it. About 10min after placing the order, get an email from Amazon in Japanese saying that the order failed and card needs to be confirmed. Called the bank, no transaction attempt has been made. Go back into Amazon and "confirm", same thing happens… Any ideas??

  • good deal thanks.

  • I might wait for a cheaper Paperwhite/Glo :)

I picked one up before when they were $79. Great little machines and a real steal for $49. I find the 5" screen good for reading on the train to/from work. Some people may find it a little small.

    • Any way to load Kindle eBooks onto these? Got a ton from the free eBook bargains people are posting.

      • +1

download calibre software to convert if they are drm free.

      • You will have to remove the DRM. Easy to do, but I won't link here to avoid Ozb issues. Just Google it.

    • How do u find the font scaling and borders? I have another brand 5" and the thing that bothers me is that the smallest font size is big and the page border is not adjustable, many books render with fat borders and I am turning 3 pages to go one page

  • Black out of stock?

    • Black is back in stock.

Price on the website has gone back up to $99?

  • it says $99

I might get "nailed" for this, but 6 inches is better than 5. :)

    • +5

You can fit 5" in some non-traditional places where 6" would be uncomfortably large.

      • Got pix? ;)

      • +1

Yep. 5" will fit in most pockets.
Is that an ereader in your pocket or are you just happy to see me?

  • -1

    .

  • Just picked up 2 in Picadilly arcadde, Perth. Plenty of stock. Although the sales dude who rung it up had a bit of a meltdown and tried to tell me it was the wrong price and that he'd be "changing it back" after I left and that I was lucky he was letting me have it.

    • +1

Sucks you got attitude. Just bought one in store at JB Belconnen, ACT. It had $79 on the box. I just took it to the counter and it scanned at $49. No worries.

  • I wish they would build like 9.7 inch eReader for Manga/Anime. The ones i have seen like the Icarus Excel only last 10hrs.

  • What makes this eReader special? What's another budget option?

I assume this one isn't backlit. Therefore I would consider this one (Sony- https://www.jbhifionline.com.au/computers-laptops/computer-a…) which has a case with built in backlight for only +$10…

    • +5

I think that is for the case and light only, no reader included?

      • +2

        lmao

      • +1

        Wow.

    • +3

      Im dumb!

    • And it's not a backlight. Backlight means the light source is behind the display. E-ink is meant to be read like a book, i.e. more ambient light is better. Now there are situations where backlighting is a useful feature, like reading in a dark room, but you'd have to pay for a model with this feature.

Incidentally the price of this case makes this deal: http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/100407 less attractive, unless they throw it in, or you can get a cheap aftermarket case with light.

  • Just grabbed one from JB Hifi at Kedron… Plenty available.

  • Can these rotate to landscape mode?

    • +1

Got one in my hand right now, doesn't look like it…

    • Only for pdf's will it rotate, normal books no.

  • My local jb hifi was selling kobo mini with free snap on case (21.95 price tag) for $49!

    • Which location is this?
