Base FS170 Slide and Film Scanner $9.83 @ Target

150

My dad has a collection of slides at home and couldn't turn this down for the price. It's called "Base" which is a Target home Brand and the model number is FS170. It is an identical replica of the Qpix FS170 as shown here http://www.teds.com.au/qpix-fs170-film-scanner . It has different names depending which part of the world you are from, but the model number FS170 is always the same.

DESCRIPTION

The FS170 is a very simple-to-use device that works right out of the box and produces a five-megapixel digital image in five seconds at a push of a button. The device features a 5 megapixel scanning chip (i.e. 2592x1680 pixels, 3600 dpi) producing the images large enough to be printed on a A4 page! The FS-170 does not require a computer or learning a new software program, and it takes very little space to operate, store or transport. The FS-170 is uniquely designed with a built-in 2.4-inch color LCD screen for viewing and editing, and a memory card reader that saves the converted images directly onto SD memory cards. Within seconds, users can view their scanned photos through a digital picture frame or upload to a computer. It's designed to be used right out of the box by simply plugging it into an AC outlet, OR USB port.

  • Which suburb or online?

  • I visited a few target stores today in SE Melbourne looking for the Philips shaver and saw this at most stores. They have another type in a green and white box but that one is going for around $99 (full price)

  • It's only 5MP, which doesn't give you much to work with in terms of enlargements and print sizes, although it seems Ted's sells a rebranded clone for $79.95, so it's a good deal in my book :)

    • Yeah, it's just really to preserve the memories. The slides will not last forever and a digital copy can always be backed up.

I have the QPIX and after hundreds of negatives, only a hinge has gone loose. Mine was from Officeworks for $30 from memory. Great price btw. =)

    • I haven't bothered to read the manual yet, but if you connect the scanner directly to your computer can you scan the images directly to your hard drive? Or do you still have to save the images on a SD card?

      • No, I believe the USB is only to supply power. They've simplified things in this model by saving the images to the SD card which you then read on your computer. In practice this means it's best to scan in batches. Any SD card will more than suffice for one session.

It's a great price, however I decided against this ilk of device as quality is mediocre, and I went for a much higher priced scanner. If you just want to see familiar faces it will suffice. If you care about the beautiful scenery you took pictures of you may be disappointed.

        • At this price point this is a good place to start. If I am not happy with the outcome then I may look at other options. As I said earlier it's really to make a back up copy. I still enjoy watching slides on the old Hanimex slide projector.

Some of these slides are over 40 years old so I don't know how they'd come out even using the very best equipment.

        • By all means have a go and see how you like the results. You might also like to try some image editing software to correct deficiencies. Slides that old may have suffered colour shift as dyes fade.

Besides better opticals, more expensive scanners come with software that correct for scratches, dust, and do image editing. As I said, see how you go with the simple scanner first. For $10 you can't go wrong. Consider it the price of home entertainment, keeping you from spending $$$ going out. :)

      • I think you can connect it to your computer to scan and save it there, but this might need software (from the CD-rom I think). I used mine with a SD card: I got a 2gb SD card and inserted it into the backside of the scanner and scanned them onto there.

Saw them at Broadway, NSW. Not sure if the quality would be worth my time however.

I borrowed one from a friend. It's basically a phone-camera-quality cmos sensor that takes a photo of the slide, backlit by three LEDs. As you'd expect, the dynamic range is poor and there's no dust/scratch removal or color correction, so the results really depend on the condition of your slides. The one I borrowed also had a strange smattering of distinct colored pixels in lines - must be a faulty sensor.

I ended up buying an Epson scanner. Much better results. But for this price, if you set your expectations right, it's a bargain!

  • Ihave one of these and it does a great job .

  • Does anyone know of any stores around Melbourne that have these in stock? I had a look in Southland today and couldn't see any. Cheers.

    • During my travels yesterday both Ringwood and Somerville had stock. Other stores may have but I can't remember.

Just went to Target at Helensvale and they wanted to sell it for $49. Showed them your post and they adjusted it to the price you got it for. Thanks OP!
