I am in IT and run a lot of lab stuff at home. The pihole is set and forget - even in a complex environment it doesnt need management.

      • Same with Adguard Home. Once it's up and running and you've configured DHCP to point to it, there's not much else to do. Occasionally I log into the web interface and allow a site that is being blocked, and for those annoying unsubscribe links in emails that get blocked I typically just disable it for 30 seconds and click the link, then it re-enables itself automatically.

    • I've had homebridge running for 2 years and i've had to go in and update the app once.

I use it to integrate my ubiquiti camera system and doorbell into homekit.
      - When someone rings the doorbell, i get the video feed and microphone/speaker through to my apple watch. If the tv is on it will go through the apple tv and appear on the top right of the tv screen. It will also "ring" through the homepod so i dont need a doorbell ringer.

If I'm out of the house I never respond via the watch though as people then get confused when you're not actually home.

pihole is no longer serviceable, it works on a DNS level which is now circumvented by the most popular websites

if you dont want ads then just switch to brave browser

  • Would it be possible to make a PS1 emulator with this?

    • Yes, plus many more

    • +1

yeah it can do PS2/N64 as well.

      • which controllers do you use?

      • +1

        PS2 maybe too slow…

      • Probably not.

  • +1

Anyone using Pi 5 with Pi 4 power supply?

  • +4

I'm still a bit surprised at how many people buy these, but never use the GPIO pins as intended.
Why? For the same price you could get a micro-PC, with a proper SSD and more RAM, power supply and case.
Then install Proxmox, and it will do the job of a number of Pi's.

So many people have trouble with Pi because of flakey SD cards and power cables.

    • +5

Where can you get a micro pc for same price? Plus Pi’s use lot less power so long term it’s more cost effective to run 24/7.

      • +11

Pi 3 and KAMRUI mini PC owner here.

When you fully accessorize the Raspberry Pi 5 it no longer costs $63.23. It might be somewhere north of $120 depending on the quality of the stuff you pick. Things like power supply that can reliably output at least 3 amps (but 5 amps is recommended), a high capacity / high speed MicroSD card, USB cable, and an enclosure / heatsinks don't come included with your purchase.

At $120 or $150 you can buy a fully working desktop machine that has more performance / 16gigs of RAM, native NVME storage, and included power supply cables out of the box, so you can see why the Pi5 isn't always the best choice for 'general compute' tasks.

        • +1

Fair enough but what about power costs for running it 24/7! We are discussing on ozbargain after all 💰

          • +7

@quebec: You can think of the Mini PC as a "one size" fits all solution, it'll do everything a Pi can do plus more, but at the expense of power draw.

The Pi 5 is power efficient and can do some of the things an x86 machine can do, plus it's a great option if you want to delve into things like Pi HATS or have special connectivity needs (i.e those GPIO pins).

But if you have no interest in the latter then you are basically using the Pi 5 as a general purpose PC, and that's where you might have to ask yourself whether it's worth trading away performance for the sake of power efficiency (which is really only a few extra dollars a year)

If you are just after a cheap lower power appliance that will run Pi Hole and nothing more, there are even lower cost Pi's e.g Pi Zero W (or older gen Pis) that will get the job done. The Pi 3 for e.g only requires a 2 amp PSU and $23 dollar Pi Zero W requires 1.2amps

            • @scrimshaw: Thanks.
My first Pi was a 2B. I used it for an "IP camera" using a USB webcam. Sold it eventually, and used a wifi router running OpenWrt instead.
My 2nd Pi was a 3B. It has been there for years, running only PiHole. Never feel that I truly need it.
Have never pulled the trigger for a Pi4.

Now, could you recommend a mini PC that can run NES/SNES/Wii/WiiU emulators?

              Thanks

          • +4

@quebec: I believe some of the mini PCs are very power efficient. Lets take the $100 Lenovo UFF m70q I bought. Found a reddit post about someone monitoring its power. got it down to 3 watts on idle!

            https://www.reddit.com/r/HomeServer/comments/17klp2o/guess_t…

          • @quebec: 10-20W for a desktop sitting idle 99.99% of the time. You'll have more wasted watts in USB chargers all around the house

      • +2

Power use of an always on device is crucial for many applications a PI is used for.

      • +4

I purchased three Lenovo M710Q ThinCentres for 90 bucks each. i5-7400T, 8GB RAM. No 'extras' to buy like you need to with a Pi like power supplies and sd cards and cases - so the 90 bucks is turn key. I am using them as a proxmox cluster to replace my fleet of Raspberry Pis. Far better bang for your buck and none of the flaky RPI issues. I have had two RPI4's die on me, and a number of SD Card issues.

    • +1

I run my Pi off a USB SSD.

Power consumption is a lot lower than any micro-PC, even with the increased power need of the Pi 5.

    • +2

I think the appeal of the Pi is the standardised hardware and tilt towards education means most projects have very good docs, suitable for first timers, and you don't get a problem because you have a weird chip in your wifi card or similar.

Now prices for pi gear is higher, an ex-lease PC is better value if you don't value the ease of use/getting started aspect.

    • +2

Yes. I've have SD cards fail too often. If you want something more state-of-the-art ARM go Orange Pi.

I need at least 1-2 SSDs these days (NVME preferably), so its miniPCs from now on. I've spent 10 years with Raspberry Pi and its end-of-life, the competition has overtaken.

      • This.

The only exception I can think of is where space is absolutely critical.

    • I just need video on TVs. And I only use a case for cooling. I wish I had a need for camera detection or whatever else.

      • you could use the gpio to sync coloured lights around the tv, like a Hue box :-)

        • Oh clients would love paying for that. The price of these boxes and the setup isn't already shocking enough for a small business.

    • I got sick of sd card corruption so mine runs off an old HDD from a laptop I used to have

    • +2

yeah, these things a no longer a good general option

you are much better off with a dell wyse 5070 for $60 and yes, it's more efficient, might use a tiny bit more juice but it's far more powerful for the extra few watts it uses

and im sure arm is a lot better these days but linux is so much more mature and stable

imho the worst thing you can do is buy x4 of these pis for dedicated builds like
      - homekit
      - media server
      - nas
      - router
      - etc

if you need multiple systems just get a mini pc like a ryzen 5600u and virtualise everything on the single system

      • +1

That Dell Wyse is powerful enough to do all those things and more in a home environment.
Even does hardware transcode for Plex, I think.

Someone is selling the 4GB/16GB version on ebay., ~$60 Has spare slots for ram and m.2 ssd.

        • yes they support 4k encoding, hardware accelerated, they have gemini lake, so great for a plex server/media center

yeah I bought a couple from that seller last year, they're in perfect condition, well worth the money, especially compared to a pi

btw m.2 is SATA only i believe, not pcie/nvme, motherboard comes with 16gb mmc which is perfect for a router/etc - also they're fanless

  • Any recommendations for cheap pi5 case? element14 Doesn’t seem to sell any

  • 3.2% back on Cashrewards for Element14 as well

    • +5

      0%

Raspberry Pi is on their list of brands ineligible for cashback.

      • +1

        Phew, almost missed out.

  • +1

    I ordered a Pi5 + case + psu = $140 delivered 2 months ago.

Now just ordered the same from this post for $100 delivered.

    :)

Interesting to note, stock was 220+ when I first clicked on the deal, there's now 84 left 0 left, all sold out !

  • Is a PI NAS any good or should I just build a mini atx set up or something? Basically all i want to do is back up photos from my phone automatically and be able to look at them like google photos.

    • +1

I thought about doing this, a DIY photo backup setup, but recently decided to set this up with a QNAP. Their suite of tools is excellent (Qmagie + Google Photos backup + Qfile).

It's probably more expensive than what you're trying to do, but I was fairly happy with how easy it all integrated together.

      • +1

Yeah im still tossing up the qnap route but it looks like ot will be $500 plus drives.

        • +1

Yeah, the cost is the trade off. Hope you can work something out! :)

    • +2

I use Pi as NAS with two usb3 external HD, work well.

      • Thanks for the reply, do you have auto backup of photos?

  • Does it include the power cord? I don't think so

    • +1

No, board only. Add power supply for $20.

  • Says Available for back order now :(

  • What is the best option for emulating up to PS2 with Batocera? I had a Pi 4 setup that could go up to PS1, can this do PS2? Or any other recommendation up to around $150-$200?

    • No. For PS2 et a PC. As per other comments: More power. More flexibility.

      • Yeah I looked into it a bit last night and thought maybe this might be a pretty good option? But I guess it will always be hard with integrated GPU's. I do have an actual PS2+OPL setup and CFW PS3, but it would be nice to try out some of the upscaling features the emulators use but I don't think that's happening for $200~

    • If you're playing on your TV look into streaming from Steam through your PC with Sunshine/Moonlight.

      • Looks like a neat solution, problem is I only have a MacBook Air lol

  • Available for back order
More stock available week commencing 12/08/24

    • For me it says

278 AU stock available for 1-2 business days delivery
More stock available week commencing 12/08/24

So no issue, unless I order 279 of them.

      • I think the product page might be cached as I didn't notice it update at all while in the cart the available quantity kept dropping.

        • I ordered last night when it was showing 278 AU stock available for 1-2 business days delivery. I had page opened when this was just posted and it was still showing 278 AU stock despite refreshing it but the link here was showing on back order after it was updated.

I inspected both links and it was different. Now both links show on back order. Don’t know if I will receive mine sooner or in August but the email says processing.

  • On backorder already :(

  • 4G vs 8G RAM, how to choose?

    • +1

      The 8GB is full price.

Only the 4GB is discounted, but its now on backorder/ out of stock.

  • -4

What if you order pi 5 with psu & case, will they ship the case & pay first & can the Pi order be cancelled later? Trying to get case n psu with free shipping.:)

    • +2

id hope theyd charge you the $15 once you do that for fking them about. express shipping on orders over $50 is insane. just support them

  • Looks like back in stock

    • Still says available for back order

      • Website shows the following for me:

278 AU stock available for 1-2 business days delivery

  • Can I use a 45w USBC old laptop power adaptor for this?

    • Check the voltages that your USB power adaptor can output. It uses PD so it should negotiate power depending on requirement, but likely uses 5V. Laptop chargers may or may not have the other voltages.

The official charger specs are below:

      5A at 5.1V,
      3A at 9V,
      2.25A at 12V,
      1.8A at 15V

E: Important note, 5V5A is not a PD voltage, so you might need to find a charger that does output this. A lot of USB-A chargers can output 5V5A, but not sure if the RP5 will recognise this.

  • +3

serious FOMO but I dont know what to do with one

Leave it for the real users

  • Is the 4GB enough for HA with ~120 lights and a dozen automation?

    • +3

You'll be fine. For reference, I have ha, z2m and mosquito all on dockers over 170+ devices and 50 automations, running on a Pi4, 2GB, currently consuming 56% of memory.

      • @ho-ly phuc Thanks!
Ordered but might have to wait till August for delivery 😢

  • What's the major upgrade in Pi5, I'm still on a Zero and 3B? Is it just ram or other aspects too?

  • +5

For those with FOMO, looking for more USB ports and/or don't want to try and find an appropriate power supply, case and cooling solution, the Dell Wyse 5070 thin clients are a good Raspberry Pi alternative and come with a PSU. They are also cheaper, even when not on super special like the expired deal below.

    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/266079359057
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/835835 (expired)

Obviously a little bit more involved to get up and running than a Raspberry Pi, but ultimately also more capable and expandable I reckon.

  • The website says its in stock. 280 AU stock.
    About 9:30pm

Not into FOMO so will pass.

  • Having second thoughts, and want to cancel my order. will see if possible

  • Ordered, won't be available until Aug but it's alright, I'll probably looking to use it as an aircraft tracker

    • Whattt?

      • Afaik you can plug a software defined radio dongle in and use that to receive ADSB signals from aircraft

    • A RPi5 would be overkill for ADSB. I have been using RPi3Bs for my FlightAware stations for many years, never had any dramas with them.

      • Oh really? I honestly don’t know much, this is my 1st ever raspberry pi. I remembered looking to buy a Raspberry Pi 3b+ a few months ago and it was around this price so I thought paying same for better hardware is good lol.

  • +1

any sort of cool cyber security related projects i could do around this?

    • build a router?

    • Yes

  • Need a SNES/SFC case for that but I can only find the ones for Pi4 at the moment.

  • +2

buy an sff optiplex from a local computer recycler instead, unless you reaaaaly need a pi

around same price as pi's rrp but 10000x better performance (to be expected)

    • +1

get an USFF, much smaller :D I have running PiHole, HA etc on one

      • Yea that's what I meant lol

    • where does one find local computer recycler?

      • search around, usually people selling bulk on fb marketplace are recyclers
