  • Looks like they removed kurayoshi from the lists as code does not work.

    • Looks like the code works now.

  • Need a whiskey for a bday gift for someone under $100. Any recommendations?

Was going to get iniquity talamara but i know nothing about whiskey

    • +5

Starward nova or two fold are good gifts

      • +3

        Starward 100%

    • Get the Talamara because it has a lot more character than the boring Starward no-age-statement core range; which is an apera solera, a wine cask one, and two fold which sounds interesting because 2 grains but it's just as boring as the other two (I don't even know what the second grain is). Starward used to be good, they had New World Projects which produced some very interesting bottles, then the Diageo investment ruined everything.

Here are the Talamara specs that you can easily find on their website:

      4YO Shiraz Casks

4YO Shiraz casks, finished in a mix of port and sherry casks, predominately American Oak. Very lightly peated with peat from the Parawa property originally named Talamara.

The Starward website is all marketing fluff.

      • Well thats annoying I just did an order for the Starward.

Oh well….Talamara for his 50th I guess lol

        • +1

Starwards are not terrible, just incredibly dull. But easy drinking and "smooth" I guess

    • Singleton 12

  • Is the Kurayoshi a whiskey or a whisky? I don't really like scotch so tend to stick to irish, american, japanese etc whiskeys but the page is confusing.

    • +3

Whiskey and whisky mean the same thing; there are no hard "rules" and you can always find exceptions to the norms. Maker's Mark being one of them.

The Kurayoshi is a cheap 3 year old blend, with intentionally vague info. I wouldn't buy it.

A good—still affordable—Japanese blend is… nevermind I just looked it up and it's over $100. Nikka From The Barrel was one of my favourites when it cost $60

You should stick to American and Irish because there are no Japanese worth buying these days.

      • +1

You're taking the P155 with Nikka being $60 surely. Maybe 20 years ago.

        • +1

No, about 10-12 years ago. Yoichi 15 was $140 and Miyagikyo 12 was $120. I didn't bother with Taketsuru because I liked NFTB more.

          • @rosebank: Bought Hibiki 21 in Japan for $300 back then. How times have changed.

            • @sb9: Lol I found a 1990 single cask Hanyu in some random supermarket for $150

      • It's a good rule of thumb though, most of the time it's right. It's just LL's page spells it both ways for this one.

And yeah, I've got a bottle of Nikka from the barrel, the value to flavour really isn't there with Japanese I guess.

      • I had a Nikka Taketsuru a couple of months ago at a restaurant and it was amazing. But I’m new to Japanese whisky. I’ve been wanting to get a bottle and waiting for some sales to happen.

        It was this one.

    Fake!

    • Who cares if it's actually made in Japan, as long as it tastes like a Japanese whisky?

    • it says "made in Japan" on the label

      • Made in Japan by blending imported whisky. See the link I've posted below.

  • Dammit I just purchased from BWS thinking it would be cheaper because of the cashback. Any chance I can return my purchase of Aberlour 12 to BWS?

  • Terrible whiskey. Just don't. $20 Suntory Kakubin is better than this.

    • word. first off japanese whiskey pricing last decade absolutely taking the piss so hard its fools gold. but most importantly, kurayoshi unaged varities are pretty below avg. need a 12yr old before they start approaching passable..

  • Drink the Abelour. It's delicious.

  • I was given the tottori as a birthday gift. I recommend you skip it. Tasted like an average scotch.

  • Thanks mate, never tried Loch Lomond before. Makes me think of Captain Haddock from Tintin.
