Topping MX3 Headphone + Speaker DAC/Amplifier with Bluetooth $154 Delivered @ Shenzen Audio

In my opinion, the best bang for buck all in one desktop audio device. Usually sells for close to $200 in Australia.

Tiny footprint, more inputs than you'll know what to do with, clean DAC, Bluetooth connectivity and it'll power both your headphones and a pair of passive speakers. I've owned and enjoyed mine for over a year now.

Here's a long and rambley Zeo's Review

A description from Drop:

A digital amplifier with a built-in Bluetooth receiver, DAC, and headphone amp, the Topping MX3 does it all. This versatile, compact unit can be used to power your passive speakers or headphone amp. In systems that already have a discrete headphone amp, the MX3 can function as a DAC or preamplifier. It outputs an impressive 247 mW of power at 32 ohms in the headphone amp section, enough to power demanding headphones . Connect the MX3 to your bookshelf speakers with banana plugs or a speaker wire, and it’ll deliver 38 W per channel at 8 ohms. Featuring a digital display with adjustable brightness, this unit can also be connected to Bluetooth using NFC.

Also has auto on/off which was important for me. Going to use it with a chromecast audio

  • any thoughts on this vs SMSL AD18?

Going for $158 at the moment on Amazon, down from it's usual $180

    • I had the same dilemma when I bought mine. If you need the extra power for speakers I'd go with the SMSL (80WPC for the SMSL vs 38WPC on the Topping), otherwise the Topping would be a better option (better DAC/Headphone Amp, no fiddly mini connections, this is subjective - but I think the MX3 looks better too).

For reference, the MX3 comfortably drives my KEF Q100s as a desktop near-field system and puts out enough power to fill up a small to medium sized room.

I got SMSL AD18. It is very good for what it is. Decent DAC and drives my legacy Paradigm and Dali Ikon 6 very nicely.
However falls much short to my Rotel amp with chromecast audio. Being Class D has its limits.
      Still worth every $$.
Topping has a dedicated conventional SW preout, whereas SMSL has one in a non-conventional way.

    • I've got the ad18 paired with B&w 685's. No complaints. As good as my old aventage amp but uses alot less power, good for desktop use

This product is actually available for $169.15 Delivered Fulfilled by Amazon @ Amazon AU.
    https://www.amazon.com.au/Topping-Digital-Amplifier-Optical-…

Only $15 more for local stock & Australian Consumer protection.

    • Good pick up! I'd say its worth the extra if you're after the silver model. The black model on Amazon is actually fulfilled by Shenzen Audio.

  • Thoughts on this vs the I.AM.D V200BT on Aliexpress?

    • Just had a quick glance, cant comment on sound quality. My old el-cheapo Lepai from Ali looks ugly but sounds equally good as my SMSL.
Topping & SMSL have dedicated Subwoofer preout - if that matters.

      • You are right. that does matter to me as I want to use it for 2.1 sertup, its just a lot easier to run a sub with it. Does the V200BT not have it, I thought it did by looking at the picture, but I'm not very well versed with audio stuff.

  • Today I saw Shenzen Audio for the first time.
Do they run these discounts from time to time or just once/twice a year to "match" Prime days on Amazon?

I am trying to decide between Topping DX3 Pro and SMSL M500.

    • +1

They run sales throughout the year. Generally some of the best prices for Chi-Fi gear.

  • How does this compare to the Topping DX3 Pro ? Need to drive a couple of 60W Speakers with all the bells and whistles to connect up to a streamer and/or Roon

    • I have the DX3 Pro. It's a headphone DAC/amp; it doesn't power speakers, but it's great for my HD6XX's. I just got an SMSL SA300 for my speakers.

  • Anyone know how this compare to the L30+E30 stack? it's currently one sale for $318

    • +2

L30+e30 is built for high end headphone use. The mx3 is made for speakers. Different things

  • Seems you can put SHENZENAUDIO5 for $5 discount for purchases over $50. Got a message from their online chat.

    • thanks krisspy but code didn't work for me.

  • I'm looking for optical out (to go into a soundbar). I recently found the XDUOO XQW-50pro, but it doesnt have the headphones out. Having one that supports both would be ideal. Trying to avoid the creative X3, which seams to do all, but has software I'd like to avoid.

  • Oh man, wish I took notice of this thread when it was current. My old Sony TA-VE215 (overkill) is serving as my desktop amp for my study and the solenoids are crapping themselves… This looks like a worthy replacement other than the lack of 5.1 (which is overkill for a home office setup anyway). Oh well, $200 on Amazon it is! This was a good find, thanks anyway poppingtags.

If you click through my link - it looks like it will go on sale again on the 11th. Combine it with a referral code and it should get down to just under $160 :)

  • Picked one up on AliExpress from Shenzhen audio for USD$123.49 inc shipping and GST due to the 11/11 sale.

It didn't come up on Amazon so that was the best I could find at this time.

Just got to find some reasonable speakers for my home office desk now. Good stuff.

    • Let me know what you end up getting, I've been very happy with my KEF Q100s. Always interested to hear what near-field speakers people have on their desktop :)

      • Will do. Looking at either Edifier P17's or Turbosound Impact 55T's (as I have a source, they aren't made any more) however the Turbosounds are 16 ohm so I have just about written them off, not sure a little amp like this could drive them too well. Plus, I'm a cheapskate hence the Edifiers seem to fit the bill well and would be good enough for desktop audio to start with.

That KEF deal last year looked great! Something with the form factor of the Orbaudios would be perfect as I have a powered sub but I'm too cheap to buy Orbs for this.

        • I'm a cheapskate hence the Edifiers seem to fit the bill

A cheapskate would have just gone with the $100 Edifier R1280DB or $139 R1700BT (both powered speakers).

If you spent $120 on the amp already I would be reaching higher than the P17’s. But that’s just my opinion.

Audio people will tell you the final stage in the chain (speakers / headphones) matters most (biggest impact on sound) & is where you should spend the most of your budget.

          • @thebadmachine: Yeah you're technically correct however I needed multiple inputs as I have 3 PC audio sources on my desk, hence the MX3 fit the bill as opposed to BT speakers.

I've managed to secure a couple of Turbosound Impact TCI32's so will try those. They're 16ohm speakers so I'm not sure how they'll go but we'll see (or hear, actually).

            • @Bob Svargis:

needed multiple inputs as I have 3 PC audio sources

R1280DB is quite good in terms of inputs. It has 2x analog (RCA) line inputs, and 2x digital (coaxial + optical) inputs.
And a BT input for those that prefer that.
(I just checked the R1280DB equals the MX3 in inputs, and has 1x additional analog input)

R1700BT has less since it has only 2x analog inputs, and the BT input.

              • @thebadmachine: Wow, pretty impressive specs for the price. Oh well!

                • @Bob Svargis: Yes I am sure it is part of the reason the R1280DB is so popular on ozb. I assumed it was the first thing ozbargainers consider when looking for budget speakers.

Oh well. With the MX3 you have the option to upgrade the passive speakers in the future.
