Gift card deals at retailers, (e.g. Coles, Woolworths, BIG W) are popular deals on OzBargain, as they are a relatively easy and accessible way of getting a better deal when paying for goods or services at some retailers.

The purpose of this page is to address frequently asked questions raised in the comments section of gift card deals.

Coles sells two types of gift cards in-store:

• Gift cards issued by Coles Group Ltd, including:
  • Coles Gift Cards,
  • Coles Group & Myer Gift Cards, and
  • Liquorland Gift Cards.
• Third-party gift cards, including:
  • Coles Gift Mastercard
  • JB Hi-Fi Gift Cards
  • The Card Network (TCN) Gift Cards, and
  • Ultimate Gift Cards.

If you are able to check the balance at this website, it is a gift card issued by Coles Group Ltd.

No.

Coles Group Ltd sells their own gift cards and small number of third-party gift cards on a dedicated gift card website, but this website is always excluded from gift card offers.

If the deal is offering an upfront discount on gift cards, no.

If the deal is offering bonus Flybuys points on gift cards, yes.

You can sign up to a new Flybuys account through the Flybuys App or the Flybuys website.

You can also pick up a temporary card at a Coles supermarket and scan that to earn points in a transaction.

• You must register a temporary card within three months of the date it was first scanned, otherwise you will forfeit any points earned so far.
• You must register a temporary card in order to redeem any points.

At the time of writing this, there are no known sign-up bonus offers for new Flybuys accounts.

All purchases of gift cards issued by Coles Group Ltd will earn zero Flybuys points.

All purchases of third-party gift cards at Coles will earn 1 Flybuys point for every whole dollar you spend, unless you are a Coles Financial Services customer redeeming 2000 Flybuys points for a $10 discount on the transaction. If you opt for this redemption method, you will not earn any Flybuys points on that transaction.

If the gift card deal is for bonus Flybuys points for each gift card purchased, the number of bonus points is usually specified in the deal’s terms and conditions.

• Most deals award a set number of points as a bonus (e.g. 1000 bonus Flybuys points if you purchase an Ultimate Kids Gift Card), and it will be awarded in additional to the standard points earn rate for third-party gift cards. These kinds of bonus points deals usually do not scale for different denominations (unless otherwise specified in the deal terms and conditions). For the example given before, you will earn 1000 bonus points if you purchase the $30 or $50 denomination of Ultimate Kids Gift Cards.

• Occasionally, a deal will specify the number of Flybuys points you will earn for each whole dollar you spend on gift cards (e.g. 30x Flybuys points on the purchase of Apple Gift Cards). This number already includes the standard points earn rate for third-party gift cards, so the offer is for 1x standard point and 29 bonus points per whole dollar spent.

• However, the major exception is for Coles Financial Services customers redeeming 2000 Flybuys points for a $10 discount on the transaction. If you opt for this redemption method, you will not earn any Flybuys points (including bonus points) on that transaction.

All purchases of any gift cards at Coles will not count towards any other bonus points offers. For example, if your Flybuys account is targeted with a spend $120 in one transaction and earn 3000 bonus points and you spend $150 on gift cards, you will not earn 3000 bonus points from that offer.

The deal terms and conditions will also specify the maximum number of gift cards that will earn bonus points or the maximum number of points that will be awarded.

The “value” of Flybuys points is dependent on your redemption preferences. Using 2000 Flybuys points as an example, it is equivalent to:

• $10 in Flybuys Dollars (redeemable on most items at participating retailers), or
• 1000 Velocity Frequent Flyer points, or
• A $10 discount on a single transaction at Coles (only available to Coles Credit Card, Coles Insurance or Coles Personal Loan (i.e. Coles Financial Services) customers scanning the Flybuys card linked to their account).

Flybuys points can be manually converted into Flybuys Dollars in lots of 2000, and into Velocity Frequent Flyer points in lots of 1000.

No.

There is no specific time limit for when Flybuys points earned from in-store transactions at Coles are credited to a Flybuys account.

Flybuys points earned on purchases of third-party gift cards are usually credited to your Flybuys account on the day after the transaction. Points are usually credited around 5pm Sydney/Melbourne time, but may actually be credited one or two hours before or after this time.

However, there are some instances where Flybuys points will not be credited until two or three days after the transaction. This is not common, but can happen from time to time.

If you did not scan your Flybuys card during the transaction, go back to the store where the transaction took place within seven days with the receipt and your Flybuys card, and ask the service desk to add your Flybuys card to the transaction.

Even though there is a clause in the Flybuys terms and conditions that the Flybuys card must be presented at the time of purchase, OzBargainers have received standard and bonus points if they forgot to scan their Flybuys card at the time of purchase and asked the service desk on the same day to add their Flybuys card.

If you scanned a Flybuys card during the transaction, you cannot change the Flybuys account associated with the transaction after the transaction has been finalised.

If you did not scan a Flybuys card during the transaction and asked the service desk to add a Flybuys card to the transaction, you cannot ask the service desk later to change the Flybuys card associated with the transaction.

Yes.

Coles/Flybuys seems to calculate a minimum spend requirement based on:

• the cumulative amount spent within the previous week (including the amount spent on third-party gift cards), and
• the minimum spend requirements on previous offers.

For example, if you usually buy $20 a week in groceries at Coles, minimum spend requirements are usually $50 or $60. However, spending $600 on third-party gift cards over the space of a week will likely cause the minimum spend requirement on future offers to suddenly increase to $150 or $180.

The minimum spend requirements will slowly decrease over a period of two or three months, as long as there are no other third-party gift card purchases during that period.

Yes, but only if you are a Coles Financial Services customer who is buying a third-party gift card.

If you are a Coles Financial Services customer with a Flybuys account linked to your Coles Financial Services product, you can instantly redeem 2000 points in-store at the checkout in exchange for a $10 discount on the purchase of third-party gift cards. You can only apply 1x $10 discount for each in-store transaction.

If you opt for this redemption method, you will not earn any Flybuys points on the $10 discounted in that transaction. For example, if you purchase $30 worth of groceries and opt for the instant 2000 points redemption, you will only receive 20 base Flybuys points, not 30.

Yes, you can redeem Flybuys points in the Flybuys Rewards Store for a range of physical gift cards, including:

• Coles
• Target
• Kmart
• BCF
• A selected range of gift cards issued by TCN.

Gift cards available on the Flybuys Rewards Store are rarely discounted and rarely attract bonus points offers.

If you attempt to redeem Flybuys Dollars on any gift card purchases at Coles, it will be declined and the EFTPOS terminal will display an Invalid Product Mix error.

Generally, yes.

Coles stated in October 2021 that Coles Gift Mastercards cannot be used as a payment method for any gift cards at Coles. At this stage, the POS system will still accept Coles Gift Mastercards as a payment method for gift card purchases at Coles, but the POS system may be updated at any time to reflect this new store policy, plus staff may refuse anyone attempting to use a Coles Gift Mastercard to purchase a gift card.

The answer depends on the type of gift card and checkout being used.

The Coles Groceries & Returns Gift Card cannot be used for any gift card purchases at Coles; it will be declined and the EFTPOS terminal will display an Invalid Product Mix error.

Some Coles self-service checkouts will also display an error message when attempting to pay for a third-party gift card using gift cards issued by Coles Group Ltd. Self-service checkout staff cannot or will not help you get around this issue.

Gift cards issued by Coles Group Ltd clearly state in the terms of use that they cannot be used for purchases of gift cards, so staff are entitled to stop you from paying for a gift card with a gift card issued by Coles Group Ltd.

It depends on the type of checkout you go to.

Coles’ self-service checkouts do not allow split payments when purchasing gift cards under any circumstances. Staff cannot override this limitation.

Coles’ standard checkouts (i.e. the checkouts with a dedicated staff member who packs your groceries for you, or the service desk) are able to do split payments when purchasing gift cards.

Coles’ self-service checkouts and standard checkouts generally allow you to purchase up to five gift cards in a single transaction, but:

• Some store managers or service supervisors may enforce a dollar limit or a lower gift card limit per transaction (or even per day).
• All purchases of gift cards at a self-service checkout require staff approval.
• Scanning four gift cards at a self-service checkout may cause a message to appear stating that only three gift cards can be purchased in one transaction at a self-service checkout. However, staff can dismiss this message and (at their discretion) permit the purchase of four or five gift cards in one transaction.
• Purchases of gift cards costing over $1,000 requires additional staff approval.
• Purchasing three or more gift cards will usually prompt staff to warn you of gift card scams, as well as give you a small flyer with information on gift card scams. The receipt will also have a warning printed at the bottom of the receipt.

If you scan a staff card on a transaction where you’re purchasing a gift card, Coles’ POS system will automatically remove the staff card.

Generally, no.

After payment is finalised, the checkout will contact a gift card activation server to automatically activate your gift cards. The EFTPOS terminal will display a message as to whether gift card activation was successful for each gift card purchased in the transaction.

The purchase receipt will also contain gift card activation details between the GST information and the Flybuys card information (for cash-only transactions) or between the GST information and the details for the card(s) used for payment (for transactions paid in full or in part with cards or gift cards).

If gift card activation was unsuccessful, take the purchase receipt and the gift cards to the service desk and staff can sort out the issue.

Please note that gift card activation is usually instant, but the activation of some gift cards may take up to 48 hours.

All purchases of third-party gift cards will earn 4c off per litre (or 8 bonus points per litre) fuel vouchers that can be used at Shell Coles Express fuel stations.

All purchases of gift cards issued by Coles Group Ltd will not earn fuel vouchers.

Woolworths sells two types of gift cards in-store:

• Woolworths Group and Partner gift cards, including:
  • WISH Gift Cards,
  • Woolworths Gift Card, and
  • Dan Murphy's Gift Cards.
• Third-party gift cards, including:
  • Only1 Visa Gift Cards
  • eBay Gift Cards
  • The Card Network (TCN) Gift Cards, and
  • Ultimate Gift Cards.

Woolworths sells Woolworths Group and Partner gift cards and third-party gift cards on a dedicated gift card website, and this website is always excluded from in-store gift card offers.

If the deal is offering bonus Everyday Rewards points on gift cards, yes.

You can sign up to a new Everyday account through the Everyday Rewards website. You will be provided your new Everyday Rewards number (as well as a picture of the barcode) as soon as you have finished the sign-up process.

You can also pick up a temporary card at a Woolworths supermarket or a Woolworths Metro store and scan that to earn points in a transaction.

• The temporary card must be registered within six months from the date it was first scanned, otherwise you will forfeit any points on the temporary card.
• You must register a temporary card in order to redeem any points.

If you follow this link, you can earn 1500 bonus points as a sign-up bonus for creating a new account or registering a temporary card. The 1500 bonus points may take up to 30 business days to be credited to your account.

All purchases of any gift cards at Woolworths will earn zero standard points.

If the gift card deal is for bonus Everyday Rewards points for each gift card purchased, the number of bonus points is usually specified in the deal’s terms and conditions.

• Some deals award a set number of points as a bonus (e.g. 1000 Everyday Rewards points if you purchase a $50 Ultimate Kids Gift Card). These kinds of bonus points deals usually scale for different denominations of the gift cards in the deal, even if the catalogue specify in the deal terms and conditions that the only the denominations pictured are eligible. For the example given before, you will only earn 600 bonus points if you purchase the $30 denomination of Ultimate Kids Gift Cards.

• Other deals will specify the number of Everyday Rewards points you will earn for each whole dollar you spend on gift cards (e.g. 20x Everyday Rewards points on the purchase of Ultimate Kids Gift Cards).

If you are purchasing an Only1 Visa gift card or The Perfect EFTPOS gift card through a bonus points deal, you will not earn any bonus points on the gift card purchase fee.

All purchases of any gift cards at Woolworths will almost always not count towards any other bonus points offers (e.g. Everyday Rewards points boosters).

• For example, if your Everyday Rewards account is targeted with a spend $120 in one transaction and earn 3000 bonus points and you spend $150 on gift cards, you will not earn 3000 bonus points from that offer.
• There have been exceptions in the past where gift cards recently introduced to Woolworths would accidentally trigger bonus points boosters, but Everyday Rewards usually closes these loopholes very quickly.

Gift card deals at Woolworths typically do not have a limit for the number of gift cards that will earn bonus points nor a limit for the maximum number of points that will be awarded (unless otherwise stated in the deal terms and conditions).

The “value” of Everyday Rewards points is dependent on your redemption preferences. Using 2000 Everyday Rewards points as an example, it is equivalent to:

• $10 in Everyday Reward Dollars (which is redeemable at participating retailers), or
• 1000 Qantas points.

Everyday Rewards points are automatically converted into Everyday Rewards Dollars or Qantas points in lots of 2000.

After you scan the gift card(s) and the Everyday Rewards account and proceed to the payment screen, the checkout may take a couple of seconds before displaying the number of points that can be earned in the transaction towards the top right-hand corner of the self-service checkout screen.

However, this portion of the checkout screen will not always display the number of points that can be earned, as it is sometimes used to instead display the number of bonus items you will earn for any collectables promotions (e.g. Discovery Garden, Woolworths Bricks).

There are also some occasions where the bonus points are not allocated to an Everyday Rewards account until a later time or date, as it can sometimes take up to 14 business days for bonus points to be credited to an account.

Bonus Everyday Rewards points earned on gift card purchases are usually credited to an Everyday Rewards account immediately after payment has been finalised. However, it sometimes may take up to 14 business days for the points to be credited.

If you did not scan your Everyday Rewards card during the transaction, you will need to contact the Everyday Rewards team for assistance.

It is easiest if you contact them via live chat, as they can issue you written instructions on how to submit a points claim.

Please note that they will only retroactively award bonus points at their discretion, so there is a chance that the Everyday Rewards team will reject your points claim.

If you scanned an Everyday Rewards card during the transaction, you cannot change the Everyday Rewards account associated with the transaction after the transaction has been finalised.

If you did not scan an Everyday Rewards card during the transaction and previously raised a points claim with the Everyday Rewards team, you cannot ask the Everyday Rewards team later to change the Everyday Rewards card associated with the transaction.

Everyday Rewards do not regularly send out targeted bonus points offers based on a minimum spend anywhere near as frequently as Flybuys, so it is difficult to determine whether gift card purchases affect these offers.

Generally, no.

The only exception is if your Everyday Rewards Dollars balance is at or close to the Everyday Rewards Dollars balance limit, which is currently set at $4,500.

• If the gift card you are purchasing will earn bonus points and those bonus points will push you over the balance limit, the POS system will force you to redeem Everyday Rewards Dollars so that the bonus points you earn from your gift card purchase will not exceed the limit.
• The POS system will not force you to redeem Everyday Rewards Dollars if the gift card you are purchasing will not earn any Everyday Rewards points.

Generally, yes.

However, EFTPOS gift cards with card numbers starting with 5021 (including Perfect EFTPOS gift cards, TCN EFTPOS gift cards, Westfield EFTPOS gift cards) cannot be used to purchase the following gift cards at Woolworths:

• The Perfect EFTPOS gift card, and
• Woolworths Group and Partner gift cards (e.g. Woolworths, WISH, BIG W, Dan Murphy’s).

Swiping an EFTPOS gift card on the EFTPOS terminal when purchasing one of these gift cards will cause the POS system to immediately reject the card and display an Items Not Allowed error on the EFTPOS terminal.
