  • Pitty about the wireless card though. Otherwise all up a solid machine.

    • It's biggest negative is the Internal 10/100 Fast Ethernet.

But with a usb ethernet adapter + a dual antenna wireless adapter you can forgive it.

      • Defeats the purpose of portability, but then again 17" laptops are more like desktop replacements… But that adds to clutter non the less.

          1.0TB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive

I think this is probably another big negative… Would have been nice to seen a hybrid drive

        • +3

You need to remember the price that you're paying for the machine, a hybrid drive would just skyrocket the price. At $1k a 5400rpm drive is all I'd expect in a machine with these sorts of specs, and even then it'll do the job fine. Might be like 5 seconds slower on bootup or 20 seconds slower in copying a 5GB file. If those sort of delays worry you then you're not an average computer user but someone who's looking for a performance set up, which this laptop isn't aiming at. It's an Inspiron after all not an XPS or Alienware.

Out of interest, what's wrong with the wireless card?

Mine was a little buggy when I bought it a few months ago (dropouts), but has since been fine with later driver updates.

      • The 2230 wireless card only supports single band 2.4 GHz. It also supports up to 300 Mbps speed, Wireless Display (WiDi), Wi-Fi Direct, and Bluetooth 4.0.

Those planning to use 2.4 & 5 GHz bands, will require a dual band card (eg. 6235).

Quite good specs. Bought the same model but with only 6 GB ram for $999 in early October. ( But I had to pay $15 to upgrade to Windows 8)

    • was it same cpu/gpu

    • I bought the same one in October. I ordered mine during the deal but they ran out so had to build a new one and when I did received it there were grubby finger marks all over and the power switch was scratched. Machine seems slow for the specs but I'm not a expert and never had time to take it up with Dell. There after sales service is very good though.

I changed the Hard drive to an SSD. Windows 8 boots up in 9 seconds and I can unzip and zip large files with ease. It has a second drive bay which should make the change just as easy.

        • Been meaning to do that… will get to it eventually.

      • +3

Remove all the dell stuff and the laptop should speed up over 9000%. Its the dell apps and third party oem stuff like the cd burner/music and photo app which drive the performance down. Remove them and replace them with the free equivalent eg picasa for photos and imgburn for cd burning and your latop will fly.

        • Thanks for the tip… I'll do that tonight.

  • Not alot of people are willing to lug around a 17" laptop…. but solid specs

5400rpm drives are too slow imo

    • +3

Low RPM's aren't always a bad thing. Platter density would have a lot more to do with drive speed than RPM's at 1TB in a 2.5" 5400RPM is actually quite sufficient, pumping it up to 7200RPM might increase speed by 10% or about 10-15mb/s. What I'd rather worry about is seek times, and they vary depending on firmware, manufacturer, and a whole bunch of other things. For the price you're paying I'd expect nothing more than a 5400rpm drive and would be content with it as well.

It may be slow in your opinion, but it's also not a valid reason to neg. But then that's just imo.

      • -3

not sure why I got all the negs, after owning this actual laptop anything I did with it was hindered by the slow ass drive in it. games or work were slow until I changed it with a SSD.

        • -4

5400rpm is way too slow. your opinion is totally right. let neggers neg.

but this is still a very good deal.

        • Of course compared to a SSD a 5400rpm drive is going to be slow. The point is at this price you shouldn't expect anything more than a 5400rpm drive in an Inspiron. A 1TB 2.5" 5400rpm drive is not going to be so slow that it'll cripple the machine, it'll work fine and do the job just as well as an SSD once the program is loaded. Sure it might take that little bit longer but no where near making the laptop useless. If you want slow, try a PIII with a 60GB 7200rpm 3.5" hdd, now that's slow. (Or better still go with a PII)

  • Nice one.

If you show this to JB Hifi stores that also sell this model you can probably get a better deal too….

Can you send the link to jbhifi website model? Cannot find this product on their website?

  • I received my 17R on Friday. it is able to install 2nd hard drive. I put a SSD in. and reinstall win7 on it, works great. super fast. diablo 3 has been tested on it. very smooth. the only problem I had is need to open legacy boot in Bios when install OS rather than original Dell Win 8. spent few hours on it, stupid UEFI .

    • What do you mean with UEFI comment?

I'm planning to get this and crank up to 32gb ram and add ssd drive and use tjis for portable video editing.

Also how long did you wait for yours to arrive?

      • UEFI is the new 'bios interface.' kinda replaced legacy bios on new desktop and laptops now.

      • Make sure it is able to support that amount of RAM before you buy.

      • 32GB ram = 4x8GB sticks. Laptop with 4 soddim slots? Haven't actually seen one but probably is considering its a massive 17". So sad they can't get single 16GB stick. Probably with DDR4 but im sad cause my laptop has 1 soddim slot (despite the bios and the motherboard reporting 2 slots).

        • I opened the back cover and only see 2 slots for memory, and I checked their spec, looks this model can only support 8GB as maximum.

        • Officially Dell says 8GB RAM is the maximum (repeatedly stated on the Dell forums).

Some people claim to have gotten 16GB to work fine (8GB in each of the 2 memory slots), but it's not officially supported by Dell.

I've particularly seen claims than the version with 32GB mSata doesn't work with 16GB RAM.

I don't own one, I am considering getting one, but the RAM limit is one of the down sides.

Still seems good value for the money, but if you want 32GB it might not be the laptop for you.

        • My HP Envy 15 has 4 RAM slots, but maximum of 4GB in each and two are internal and an absolute bugger to get to :(

        • Thank you. Will give it a miss despite the excellent price. Really want 32gb ram for adobe premiere work.

Hi, I wait for my laptop for 1 month, they shipped it from overseas. UEFI will lock you computer with window 8 installed OS. and you can not install other OS like win7 on it if you enable it in bios. so you need disable UEFI first in bios and enable legacy boot , then you are free to install any other OS. good luck.

    • I too recieved an 17R and am planning on installing Win7, can you please elaborate on what was needed to allow the Win7 install with the BIOS?
      cheers

edit: i see this was answered a few comments above, thanks!

17" desk replacement? I rather go with a desktop. 15" should be better. but good price and specs though.

  • I've got one of these and they're a great machine. Swapped it out with an SSD as primary and put Windows 8 on it, using the 1TB as a secondary storage. Runs games pretty nicely too with the card in it, not going to be top FPS on modern stuff, but managed to play through Skyrim / Bioshock / etc. very well.

  • Great specs for the price. Good forum on Whirlpool on this laptop as well. Main negative is the 10/100 network card and apparently the batteries don't last very long (what do you expect in a gaming laptop though). You would obviously put in a SSD to replace the HDD to complete the spec.

To those saying that 17' are too big for laptops - have you actually compared the size to a 15'? There is hardly any difference and if you are going to be gaming on it (which is likely due to the specs and video card) then I would think you would prefer the larger screen anyhow.

Would be nice if they refreshed the XPS range to the latest process technology as it is considered they have better build quality to the Inspirons but for this price you can't go wrong.

I was actually looking at this laptop last week and it was going for $899 showing as $400 off. Looks like it has actually gone up in price by $100???

    • I posted that one - it had a weaker processor, so that's why it was cheaper. I believe everything else might have been the same.

  • i bought one before with 3D feature as well. the laptop is very harvy! battery can only afford about 1 hour 30 mins time as normal use(exclude gaming and video). wireless card only support 2.4Ghz N mode, no 5Ghz support. max speed about 300Mbps. 10/100 NIC is a headache as well. :(

  • Are delivery fees still ridiculous with Dell? last time I ordered from them it was $99.

      It was free for me.

Just bought an Asus G75vw. Same price and specs but has a 660m. Little bit better. Love that big screen!

  • Where'd you get a Asus G75vw for under 1k?

    • The US (from ebay). You have to compromise on the warranty. They give you a few months worth but not much longer than that. They're also classified as 'manufacturer refurbished' but it's basically new. The cheapest Aus one I've been able to find (ebay Australia) was around $1279, but it actually had a worse processor than the US bought one. It arrived in top shape and has no issues. It's great. Keep in mind you'll either need a whole new charger (laptop input side, brick and socket plug) or an adapter for different socket types on the wall plug end. :-) Just look after it and you won't have any issues!

  • This stinks. If you go to the US version of dell website, the same laptop (apparently with skullcandy speakers AND 3D glasses) retails for USD 899 without the laughable (get $500 cash off).

Though it's an overall good laptop and arguably good value, I'd still feel painfully ripped off buying it at that price.

  • for business users that would make the Dell AU price a bit cheaper than the US price. AU$999 includes 10% GST while the US price doesn't include sales tax (nearly 9.5% sales tax for states like CA)

  • 900 would be a good price, 999 is not quite.

the HDD is the bottleneck, 8G mem,3rd gen i7, are wasted.

  • Has anyone out there got the 3D version? If so, can anyone comment on which screen is brighter, has better colours etc?

  • Ok bought. Hope it doesn't disappoint!
