how do you buy big items at aldi? are they just in a pile and you carry it to the front?

    • Awkwardly balanced on trolley (just bought one).

  • CMIIW, 265kwh per year, is that mean 30 watt/hour?

    • Clothes dryers are usually rated at once per week for 52 weeks.

      • just curious, how to calculate the electricy cost? are we using 265kwh per year / 8760 * electr-cost or 1500watt x electr-cost? thx

      • 265 x 0.25c kWh = $66.25 (is that about right or have I over simplified things?)

So based on the 1 use per week you can juggle that number around accordingly. I for example will probably use it a few times in winter but never in the other 3 seasons. So I guess I can expect it to tap on $60 odd on my winter bill.

I've never owned a dryer, but my fiance says the best way to use them (for efficiency) is to still hang your clothes out, and when they are almost dry, then throw them in the dryer. It'll dry in no time. As opposed to just taking them straight out of the washer and into the dryer.

That's if you care about electricity costs anyway…

        • oh ok, just curious how things calculated, i thought it use 1500watt x 25cent x how many hour, the price can be different again.

that is a good tips, thank you

        • +15

Even better idea, still hang your clothes out but leave them there until they are dry.

        • You obviously don't live in a climate where, at times, that simply won't happen of its own accord.

        • Surely just leaving clothes on the line until they're dry is the OzBargain way. It's free!

In Melbourne it's all good until it randomly starts raining and the clothes get all wet :(

        • Melbourne is better than Sydney

in Sydney, when it rain, it rain 24x7 for a week or two…….none stop!

  • This dryer actually seems like pretty good value. Compared to many options on 2ndsworld (http://www.2ndsworld.com.au/washing-machine-dryer/dryer/vent…) it stacks up well, and most of those are double the price. And it seems no dryer goes above 2 star energy rating, with some at 1.5 stars. So this looks likes quite the deal.

I think I'll be buying one, just to use over winter when the sun no longer shines over the back yard.

  • My Simpson 6kg dryer I bought a year ago was $397 from Harvey Norman.

    • +4

You must be very proud of yourself

      • +3

Yes and I'm also proud of it's 1 1/2 star energy rating.

        • most dryer's are 1 1/2 star :)

  • just in time!! I just browsing around for a dryer!! thanks OP!!

  • +2

Crap. Just bought a 6kg haier dryer for $280 from Harvey Norman. It has the lint filter on the outside so every time I use it, my small laundry room ends up resembling a furry room from Austin Powers. Except that it's grey and not pink.

    • +2

Man alive, how much hair do you have man?

  • +6

I bought one of these last year (or possibly the year before?? Sorry - the years are blurring and am not getting off my heavily pregnant rear to go find the receipt).

Love it, it hasn't missed a beat. We used it quite a lot over the wet season so it's had a good work-out.

  • Do we know when Aldi is coming to Perth WA?

  • +9

I thought real ozbargainer dont use dryer, the sun is free. Even when its raining just hang your clothing in door and they will dry out(eventually).

joke aside, 2 star energy rating is pretty good for a clothes dryer

    • +2

One of the attractive points I let myself fall for was the energy rating, but it is a false economy, as I mentioned below, the settings are so stupid (not mention not actually correct English) that it runs longer than required.

An actual good 1.5 star dryer that you can manual set the time for would be more economical to run.

Did I mention I hate my dryer?

    • No joke, I don't have a dryer and no plans on buying one. Sydney weather is good enough all year round.

  • i just bought a simpson from appliances online for $284 (incl delivery) however only 1 year warranty. this looks like a good deal. thx op

  • +3

This dryer is a heap of crap.
I have one as a GVA (The Good Guys house brand) http://www.thegoodguys.com.au/hoppers_crossing/GVA_6kg_Elect…

I think I paid $160 during some special.
I regret it, waste of $160, I should have spent twice as much as this thing really sucks.
I have it mounted high and turned upside down. The lint trap falls out constantly; if the door is not shut, it will fall out 99% of the time.
So you end up placing it out of the way. I did this once, forgot to put it back in and a sock got sucked up inside and wrapped around a fan.
I fixed it easily by pulling the cover off, but the problem shouldn't be allowed to happen.

It is extremely noisy, far noisier than the one it replaced.

The settings are horrendous, and never again will I get a dryer where I can't set an actual drying time.
Its shortest setting is still far too long.
    It is not effeciant.

It smells really bad. The smell took about 3 months to go and it does transfer the smell from the machine to your clothes.

    DO NOT GET THIS.
I am an idiot for not taking it back and demanding a refund or at least getting a better machine.
Hell I may just chuck this out now and go look for another machine.

    • -2

As I mentioned above, I got a 6kg Simpson dryer for $397 from HN last year.

    • Im happy to take it from you… just chuck this out now and go look for another machine!

      • +2

I wouldn't do that to you.
If you kicked my dog I would throw it at you, other than that, no chance.

        • Thats a really good point about the horrible smell.
I have noticed quite a few Chinese goods reek. It is a hard issue to bring up for returns but can totally wreck your experience if its a dryer,

    • how do you know they're the same thing?

      • +4

You ever loved or hated something so much its image is burnt into your brain.
Well this is not quite that case, but I looked at it, and it looks exactly the same as the GVA, and has the exact same specs.

So unless this is a cheap Chinese manufacturer ripping off another cheap Chinese manufacturer exactly (a real possibility) then it is the same.

    • Moved^^^

    • Unfortunately a lot of vented dryers have that lint issue. Either get the exhaust vent to an air extractor or spend a bit more and get a condenser dryer.

I used to have a Fisher and Paykel vented dryer and it was rubbish. Got a Whirlpool condenser dryer and never looked back.

    • You said the lint keeps falling out, and also said you mounted it upside down. Is there a correlation between the two? I'm not actually being a smart arse either :)

      • +1

100% the case, it is fighting gravity with next to no help. It is a poor design.
if you have this upright, it wont be an issue.
But if you have this upright, it meant you purchased it, and that is the biggest issue.
        Don't.

    • Out of curiosity, why did you have to mount it upside down as the controls are on the bottom?

      • +1

The picture Aldi use is with it elevated and mounted upside down exactly how I have it.
You can see it here normal way up
        http://www.thegoodguys.com.au/hoppers_crossing/GVA_6kg_Elect…

One odd bit of note to us, is that the distance from the base (top) of the dryer to the actual drum entry door is greater than our old dryer.
What this means is that it is very difficult for the misses to actual see into or access the drum.
This is a point I need to notice for all future dryers.

  • Aldi please open stores here ASAP - Sincerely Backwater…..ehhm SA resident

ALDI has announced plans to come to SA. It'll take a while however.

On a recent trip to Melbourne I made a point to visit an ALDI and check it out (sad, I know, but it's the OzBargainer in me). I wasn't really that impressed to be honest. Some items are great value (pickled gherkins, 75% fruit conserves), but most other items could be purchased cheaper on special at the Big Two. 89c cat food was great and my cat loved it, but it's possible to get Whiskas cans for 79c about twice a year.

Personally I'm more interested in Masters and Costco coming. I've got a new house and dump a stack of money at Bunnings every few weeks.

      • Aldi is a bit hit and miss. Some weeks its great others are a bit average. Tools and some electrical stuff are great. We have an aldi dryer and works geat however last week my daughter broke the catch on the door. Hope to find a replacement somewhere.

      • +2

Yes, many of their regular stock items can be bought on special cheaper elsewhere but some of their food is better quality than avaiable in the other stores. Their fruit and veg are far better quality, and cheaper by far, also, if you must buy fruit and veg from a supermarket.

It's in their specials that savings can be made, as they do have some seriously good specials, with some items about a quarter of the cost you can get them elsewhere and if they don't sell, they're even cheaper not too long afterwards. Their specials are advertised far enough in advance to give you plenty of time to check online reviews etc.

As mentioned by Regie69 , their electrical items can be a bit hit and miss at times. There's a 90 day satisfaction guarantee though, so you can't go wrong, really.

Having said that, I personally wouldn't be buying something like a computer, or a tv or a dryer from there, but that's just me. Others have done so and are happy.

    • -6

U should hope they never open an aldi so u can continue dreaming how good they are, once they open andu wwalk in you won't likely be impressed

  • +1

Bought a condenser clothes dryer and never look back to these hot air ones…

    • +1

      i second that

  • For any one here who wants to buy this dryer, it is advisable that you check the information on product review website -

    http://www.productreview.com.au/c/clothes-dryers/m/stirling.…

I have been using Simpson dryers for 13 years. 2 dryers exactly the same model, the first one last about 6-7 years. The second one ran for two months and the rotating belt at the back came off. Replaced it and it worked for the last 6 years. It was quite easy to replace the belt by myself, I just order it online. But the machine worked well, rarely overheat and not too noisy.

A good dryer will save you money in long term.

  • +1

    Notes of interest:

    1. A few years ago some brands/models of cheap dryers were getting on the news because they were causing house fires.

    2. Aldi commission the cheapest products they possibly can.

Buying a cheap Aldi stick blender or ice cream maker (frozen bowl with a plastic mixer in it) is one thing. But trusting your home/life/children to an Aldi appliance designed to create high heat that has a bunch of cotton kindling in it? Hm…

    • +3

All clothes driers are prone to fires if the lint filter is not cleaned after every cycle.

"Dryers expose flammable materials to heat. Underwriters Laboratories[10] recommends cleaning the lint filter after every cycle for safety and energy efficiency, provision of adequate ventilation, and cleaning of the duct at regular intervals."

      • Good point, but it wasn't due to the lint filter as they weren't even running when they burst into flames.

        • It was most likely still due to lint, tightly packed it can smoulder for ages then when it gets some air…whoompfaa! ;)

        • It was a faulty component in the circuitry. Dryers plugged in but not necessarily running that day.

  • +3

If you're not happy with Aldi and don't need a larger capacity one I have this one:

    http://www.dealsdirect.com.au/mistral-4kg-tumble-dryer/

which I can recommend. Works fine in my tiny apartment (sitting on top of my washer) in the bathroom as long as I run the bathroom vent fan while its on. Got mine at BigW.

  • Warning: there's no rear vent.

You will have to put it in a room you don't mind being moist all the time, or on your back verandah, or something.

They couldn't tell me whether it did in store, told me I had to buy it and bring it back for refund of it needed.

    • Yes, that is the vent you see in the upper right hand corner n the image.
So right side up it is lower left.

      • Not sure what you mean, maybe I was unclear somehow?

There is no rear vent, it is front vent only. You can see the front vent in the picture (but, of course, vented dryers often have both front and rear vents, with a cover for the one you don't use. Sadly, this one did not).

  • So do they put out a weird plastic smell like people reported?

  • +1

despite with all negative review, but in reality, the dryer was sold out in first day when it available. i cant even get myself one :( maybe consider myself lucky after read all the negative review

  • bought one, not bad

only complaint is it take 1 hour(no less) or more to dry clothes, no matter how many clothes you put in…

guess I have a few more weeks to see if it worth it
