Brake pads (and possibly disc machining) for a Subaru Impreza MY08, best price?

Currently quoted $380 for front brake pads and disc machining from Jarvis Subaru Adelaide.

I'm thinking of going non-genuine pads and not getting the discs machined as there is no brake shudder.

What are OzB thoughts? Genuine/non-genuine, machine or non-machine? Should I go to a brake specialist?

While I can use a jack and a spanner, I would rather not do the job myself.

  • Would not be able to help you out right now but I am also looking to get the rear brake pads for my Honda Civic Vti-L MY08 and have got a quote of $240 from the Honda dealer. I am also thinking of going generic brands, so please post here if you find anything. I am in VIC though. Thanks.

  • I wouldnt pay that, bendix pads will suffice

Unless your disc's shudder, leave the machining. Just replace them with dba or similar when its required. Subaru disc's are really soft

Check out an online video, changing pads is simple, once you see it you wont know why you were fussing

  • Which suburb do you stay in. Any car mechanic will be able to offer a better price.
Call some places like profix, ABS Ultratune, etc for quotes to get an idea.
If you have a mechanic shop closeby, it's nice to get to know them as it can be convenient for little issues, etc.
The place close to my home offer a brake pad change, brake fluid flush and disc machining for about 250$ and much lesser for just a change of pads. For my old Holden Commodore it was much less than 150$.

    • I'd be interested in mechanic shops near to either Prospect or Morphett Vale.

  • Allow $50-$60 for a decent pad (e.g. Bendix)

Don't waste your time/money machining the rotors, nobody does it anymore. Its cheaper to replace. Allow $120-$150 for replacement rotors (dont worry about getting OEM rotors just go with DBA or RDA). I've fitted these to all my cars and if anything they are better than OEM rotors.

Installation is straightforward if you're mechanically minded and have the right tools, should take 2 hours for a first timer. Otherwise a mechanic should be able to install for say an hours labour at approx. $90/hr.

  • +! for DBA or RDA rotors.. Also make sure the lug nuts are done up with a torque wrench instead of a air gun.. Improper torque can warp the rotors giving vibrations.

Have a look at youtube videos if your a DIY type, since its pretty easy to replace just a dirty job.

  • robotdad - what did you end up doing?

I know this is an old thread, but I'm curious to see what eventuated, as I was in the same position a few weeks ago. In my case though, the Ford dealer quoted me $423, just for the front brake pad change without machining the rotors. So in comparison, the Subaru dealer's quote was slightly better.

I took the car to an independent mechanic, who insisted the rotors should be replaced - so I ended up getting new brake pads AND rotors for the front, at a total cost of $405. (Remsa pads and rotors.)
I was happy with that personally.

  • I was quoted around $400 for new bendix pads and rotors. I went for just the pads, but the rotors were very glazed ( and as I was only intending to get pads they did not have the rotors in stock), so I got them machined because I had left my wife waiting for the car for school pickup. Bendix pads plus machining was $245. Still cheaper than Subaru. The new brakes are great.

  • If anyone is after a quote on purchase price only for pads/discs, check out www.gslrallysport.com and ask for a quote. Prices are great and delivery is fast and often free.

If you're after something a little more than standard, they can provide that too!
