Need ADSL soon.. TPG best mix of bang for buck reliability?

Thought about all the other options Telstra, Exetel, Penny, Clubtelco.. And TPG seems to be one of the more decent ones, obviously individual factors apply. I live near Toorak (Past Chapel St VIC) if that helps. Need to sign up to something soon.. leaning towards TPG.. don't need uber fast speeds, but unlimited uploads would definitely help as I remote in quite a bit if I need a native windows screen on my tablet, etc. Even a decent slow speed is fine.

Any ideas?

Thanks

F.

    TPG is great.

…unless you have a problem with your connection then may god have mercy on your soul.

LOL this is so true. If you can be your own tech support, then TPG are great. Otherwise go Internode IMO for excellent Australian based call centre and very smart/helpful staff.

  • I find iinet more reliable and much better customer service but it does cost a bit more.

  • Just grab your Toorak Tractor, dig up a ditch and connect yourself to the NBN. I'm sure they will provide you with as much bandwidth as they deem necessary for you.

Or… I agree with ch4rgd. Go with TPG and cross your fingers for 24 months.

I've been with TPG for about 2 years now. Speeds and connectivity are quite good.

In saying that, like ch4rgd said, if your net drops out, it can be an outright pain to get things working again.

You will have to go on a contract, my advice is to opt for the 6 month contract like I did (gotta pay $69 to do this) if you do decide TPG is for you. I don't think they offer service without joining a contract, at least they didn't when I joined.

  • Take a look at NetFone. Packages are generally cheaper than TPG. Been with for 18 months now, service very reliable And tech support had been great. If you don't need a home phone their naked ADSL offerings are great value IMHO.

  • Before considering ANY ISP, look at the backup offered as well as the cost. I wont knock any specific service out there that I haven't experienced, I can only offer advice on the one I have… TPG. I have NEVER had a problem with technical backup as "cited" (?) by others here.

The list of services offered by TPG puts the user in full control - without any doubt as to their costs and usage. They offer a progressive usage chart and throttle-back in the case of your limit being reached, where many simply impose extra charges which can be quite expensive. You have a fully controllable filter and blocker and junk file cache… plus every email you get has been virus scanned for your protection - plus lots more I haven't got involved in, not being a power user or "fiddler".

I know people with ISP's who offer none of the above though and are quite happy and don't give a second thought to the "more" side of things, so I guess horses for courses applies in many shapes and forms.

I'm not saying TPG is the only ISP to be considered, as there are probably some very good ones out there … just dont discount TPG - as my 10yrs plus use of them tells me you shouldn't. Good luck whatever your choice.

  • Can you get ADSL2+?

Put your number in here: http://bc.whirlpool.net.au/

I've had ADSL2+ with Dodo for 1.5 years (no contract) and apart from the occasional hiccup it's execellent.

If you can ClubTelco starts at $20 a month for unlimited in a small number of areas (my dad has it and loves it)

  • Thanks guys,

Ended up going MyNetFone naked plan 300GB for $50 per month

    • Excellent choice.

  • Consider what is embedded with your ISP connection…
Email virus filter - nothing with a virus comes to you.
Dashboard with mail filters/auto reply/multi sends
    up to date usage meter
Pass your limit - throttling down speed (no extra charges)
    etc etc.
    That's TPG
And dont believe you get poor backup - the call centre is very skilled and polite… problem is they are in Asia, so better sharpen your listening skills. I've been with them for ten years - no problems apart from my poor hearing with accents.

NB: If you have a problem with your connection (with any supplier) it's rarely the ISP causing it, but they (all?)do try to help you correct all problems regardless.

    • Both mine and my families experience with TPG has been anything but great.
From the ridiculously slow adsl2+ speeds which are equivalent to iinet adsl1, to the support which seems responsive but is never able to resolve issues.
It's great that you get huge downloads, but good luck using them.

These are rather common features these days, something I personally expect and don't consider a bonus.
