And then you buy an amp and then you realise… The whole set ain't so cheap.

    • You don't have to go out and buy a Woo Audio amp, Schiit modi+magni does the job for about $250. 250 ohms runs fine on portables btw, depends how much extra you're willing to spend to squeeze out extra out of the cans.

    • The 250s don't need a huge amp to drive them. The 600s, different story, but the 250s sound excellent with the fiio E11, which can be had for around 50 clams.

    • fiio e17 is running my 250ohm 990s fine on the +6 gain setting

If anyone prefers open headphones, the DT990 Pro 250 Ohms are a pretty good alternative for around $100 less.

Works out to AUD 178.94 delivered to Adelaide.

I'm running them on a cheap USB DAC and they sound very nice, very comfortable too. They work alright through some devices without an amp, but the volume is a little lower of course :)

    • Thanks for the alternative.Even this alternative is worthy of frontpage.

    • The DT-880 are semi open, which means you still get quite a lot of the sound signature of an open can with better isolation.
Besides the DT990 is a different kind of beast altogether with an aggressive V shaped frequency response while those are almost completely neutral - different cans for different purposes…

    • Horses for courses but the 990's some consider better according to reviews. These are more of an all rounder whereas the 990 favor bass mainly and treble too. There is also a non pro version that is more expensive (wtf?) but they have a few more creature comforts, a decent case, spare earpads iirc and better padding. These pro ones are exactly for what the name suggests.

    • I've got the DT990. They are comfortable (I can wear them all day at work). Audio reproduction is superb. Best open headphones ever.

      • Do they leak much?

        • They are open dynamics so yeah, they do leak. How much?… I can't say. I know my colleagues can hear what I listen to IF I turn the volume up. How much other people can hear and how clearly is not something I can't tell you right now.
If you want I'll check when I go to work tomorrow.

        • Nah was just wondering as I know usually open are not that great in the workplace. (I use my DT-770 at work and find them to be awesome)
