Dell Discount - Vostro 470

Howdy.

I'm helping a friend update his dinosaur windows 98 machine to a newer Dell. Budget has always been tight but I think we have agreed on the Vostro 470 for $1099 (current work desktop deals).

Is there any easy way to shave another few dollars off this price? NRMA discount etc?

Thanks

ps I'm after a good office PC. So the 8gb and 4C should meet those requirements. Any better suggestions I'm all ears.

  • With deals that currently already have discount, it's pointless to use NRMA or "member discount" from Dell, as it takes away the existing discount before applying their own. 8% off for desktop systems over $1,000, so existing $300 off is much better.

Another thing is — are you sure you are getting the i7-3770? Seems to be Vostro 470's only option. Depending on what your friend intends to do, it would be better to get an i5 with a SSD system disk.

  • Hi Scotty. Thanks for the reply.

I will be adding a SSD 128gb drive to this system. We have a few more dollars to spend on things like AV/backup etc. I'm a fan of having all the windows stuff on one drive and all the documents and clutter on a second larger drive.

  • +1

Jumping from a windows 98 machine (probably a p2/3) to an i7 seems overkill. Like trading in a 120Y on a Ferrari.

I would save the money and go for an i5 or even i3 - the end user obviously isn't a power user.

    • Probably still ultimately better value because he's probably going to go 15 years before his next upgrade, and the i7 will at least last longer before becoming obsolete

  • I used to own a 120Y!!!! But I aint close to a Ferrari yet.
Did you contact the museum to see if they wanted to buy his old PC? Might be worth alot!!

  • I'm not quite sure how he did it, but he got a free upgrade in the warranty, when he asked. Thats about $139 worth (going from 1y NBD to 3y NBD). I guess thats better than the nrma discount.

And the i7, yeah it is overkill, but I like the idea of AV + skype + word + excel + ie all having a processor each (ok HT processor) and still having 3 'cpus' to spare. I call it future proofing.

    Its all ordered now

    Thanks
