Help with price and selection of lenses for Canon 60D

Hi All,

I just wanted some advice on purchasing a Canon Camera and lens to go with.

Ted's Quoted me a 750 for a Canon 60D and I wanted to have Sigma lenses, but the sales rep Tamron would be a better choice,
The sigma lenses was a Macro F3.5/6 18-250MM -450
and Tamron lenses 18-270 Di II Vc PZD - 450 as well.

Im just starting to learn photography and mostly I would be interested in doing family portraits and bit of nature.

Can you please suggest me if its a good deal and if the lenses I have selected is alright, or please feel free to suggest me any good lenses not too expensive
but spending around 550-600$..

Thanks in advance for all your suggestions

  • I have the 60D with 3 lenses. A canon 70-300mm basic lens, canon 1.8 50mm and a sigma wide angle (can't remember its focal length 18-50mm I think?) For portraits probably pick up the canon 50mm (about $100) Good lens for the price. You also probably should get a decent zoom lens for portraits as well. Allows you to zoom just on subject. The basic 70-300mm is about $150. Also look into getting a tripod and some lighting equipment. Hope that helps

  • With 60D you would want a fixed high aaperture lens otherwise you will struggle with low light. ISO capacity in the camera is pretty restricted.

Also because of its crop factor you would want a ultra wide to medium for your main zoom lens.

I have used Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 VC and the image quality was amazing. Definitely more superior than Sigma and is on par with Canon. Plus you can get it for $350-500. The VC is recommended to produce sharper image.

The Canon equivalent is 17-55mm f2.8 EF-S but it cost $900 plus.

If you are keen with photography buy this. A non fixed aperture and full range zoom lens that you mentioned in the post is a beginner lens (not sharp) . You will sell it again one day.. At least buy a secondhand if you still insist.

    • this ^^^

superzooms are a joke and only noobs buy them

basically they are all about max zoom and stuff all about quality and aperture

i have the tamron 17-50 f2.8 as well

the VC is not as sharp as the old non VC

later on if you need long range a 70-200 f2.8 or even f4 is good but after that you need to spend up big

  • +1 for prime lenses. I got the 28-135mm which I love (f3.5-5.6), but would much prefer a faster prime lens. I use my 50mm f1.8 often, especially in anything darker than direct sunlight because I don't like the noise above iso800 (I have a 550d which from memory is the same sensors as the 60d).

I found this a good Page when I was looking at my last lens:

  • While not as good as higher end cameras, you get 6400iso on the 60D. Have to agree though low light it struggles. Which is why I mentioned lighting equipment. Going by the lenses you mentioned they are a little above what the poster wants to spend.

There is nothing wrong with Sigma lenses. Besides the aforementioned lens Tamron 17-55mm. Most pros put Sigma above Tamron.

I don't use L lenses on my 60D They are usually for use on my 1D. Stick with your budget for that camera
