iPad, cheaper in US in shops??

Hi all.

Just had a question for anyone who knows.
I need to get an Ipad 16gb for my mum. My cousin is going to Vegas next week also, for a few days for work.

I have not looked very hard locally but see Target has it now for $509.

Apple US website has it at US$499.

Would the local tech stores there be cheaper than the Apple store, and if so, by how much (I don't want him to go bargain-shopping in a few shops, just pretty much buy it).
I can also get 10% back from local stock with the GST refund.

FYI, Apple Australia website is $539

nah, that US$ is without gov tax, and be careful some are specially designed for ATT or TMobile something like that (i saw one, you cant put sim card eventho it is a cellular model)

i have done calculation many times with ipad iphone, cheaper bought here and bring it overseas (claims gst obviously)
also some said no international warranty on ipad - do your own research.

also when buy locally you can buy now and prepare it - put songs movie books etc.(read: jailbreak)

    • cool. thanks. my brain is wired to immediately think everything is cheaper in US and we're getting ripped off.
When I saw there was little difference in price between local (Target) and US Apple Store, I was shocked actually.

      • You're brain is OK,

its the Aussie media which is the issue, they headline the price differential by Adobe, M'soft, plus the itunes price differentials (which are based on royalties paid to copyright holders) and either imply, or dont make clear that this isnt the case with Apple hardware.

Then some also get the subsidised prices in the US, where you must have a contract with a Telco, as the outright purchase price.

Likewise buying from a retailer can save sometimes more than buying at Apple's list price. Like all products from all manufacturers.

Of course sometimes, depending on the exchange rate at the time of introduction, this might be a little higher or lower depending on currency movements. Apple generally doesnt reprice products until a new model comes out.

The sad thing is that Choice, our consumer watchdog, can't even work this out. Which is concerning as if they cant do that properly what else do they get wrong.

Yeah, they add sales tax on top of that price, which differs depending on the US State. Buy it here as cheap as possible (Big W most likely), and have your friend claim the GST when leaving. Save their precious time in the US for cool things, not shopping for iPads you can get anywhere.

^ This. When I was in NYC I was stoked that things would be cheaper but once you add sales tax (I think it was a bit under 9%), it works out to be about the same price and you get stuck with a different power adaptor. I also received an iPhone 4S from my employer and the US power plugs are different to our Apple bricks here where you can change the plug on the end (the US ones are fixed into a smaller charging unit). Even iMacs, Macbooks, Airport Express, etc work out to be cheaper here especially if you buy it from say JB Hifi and get the prices down- the US stores don't negotiate much beyond employee purchase plan pricing (4% accessories, 8% computers) and this pretty much offsets the tax.

  • I thought the same thing when I went to Japan. They have 5% GST. But after working it out and taking off the GST from Australia it was a grand total of $15 difference. Apple really have done their sums

    Plus u get a retarted plug :/
