Bananas $0.99/kg at Coles [Altona North, VIC Possibly Other Locations]

440

Coles Altona North (Altona Gate Shopping Centre, VIC) have good quality smallish bananas on sale for $0.99/kg. Plenty of yellow-green ones good for the ripening!

Not sure how long this deal is on for, but they re-stocked the bananas just after I was there. Get down and stock up!

Sure explains why Woolworths downstairs are selling bags of old bananas with their usual price at $3.95/kg!

Sighted in Barkley Square on Saturday but not today

The OP, 102010 saw it at Altona today. I saw it at Barkley Square yesterday (picked up a couple). It's certainly a good deal but Vic Market had them for around $1.50 today.

        • ah ic

    • Same at Altona

  • Food prices must be cheapest in VIC

    • It's a fluke, I've been to QLD - food prices here are vastly higher, 1 because a lot comes from QLD and 2, because we can afford to pay more so they crank it.

Plenty of yellow-green ones good for the ripening!

I've often found the ones I but at Coles or Woolies that aren't ripe, never actually ripen. They just dry up and go browny green… Definetly the last place I'd go for fruit or veggies.

How do you go about ripening them though?

For bananas, an overnight trick to get them ripe to eat is to put them in a sealed bag.

      • +2

Can also add an apple/pear or tomato to the bag with the bananas as these fruits emit a gas(ethylene) that increases the speed of ripening.

We used to get pallets of them too green all the time we'd have to wrap the pallet in wrap and stick it out in the sun.

But yeah generally in a paper bag in a warm spot does the trick, also the tomatoes as mentioned below help.

      • How do you go about ripening them though?

I just leave them in a fruit bowl…

Bananas I get from the fruit shop are nearly always perfect, but the ones from the Supermarkets often don't ripen and just go old and stay green… I'm guessing they pick them too early.

    • I guess it depends on how you like your bananas.

I know what you mean with the green ones that never get there, but some of these were only green enough such that they will be perfect in the next day or 2 imo.

Most are perfect for the eating right now in the pic!

      • I reckon the ones in the pick could ripen for another 1 or 2 days before eating :p. I hate biting into a banana that's yellow thinking it's ripe only for it to be hard and tart.

  • Top price. Time to buy a few kilos!
This would be a store specific special. Stores will generally markdown stock when they have an excessive quantity or when it's of poorer quality.

$3.50/kg in Sydney :( Haven't eaten a banana in ages.

    • You're looking in the wrong places. Harris Farm Markets had them for $2.25/kg until tonight.

    That price is bananas!

Ha, for them to offer it that cheap in VIC, they must have some road/train problems and can't get the produce to Adelaide or Perth so need to dispose of it fast.

AFAIK Coles main warehouse is in Melbourne and we get the 2nd hand cold storage stuff across the Nulabor a week later…

    • There's one in Sydney and Brisbane as well, not entirely sure about other states.

  • About time a banana deal was posted…

  • GO GO GO STORM COLES!!!!

  • Bananas $2.90 @ Coles on Northern Beaches Sydney

  • No Deal, I heard that they were all bent :(

  • [off the topic] - sorry guys, £0.68 seems to be long term low price here where we are in UK - for quality big yellow ones. Isn't it amazing, all bananas imported and cheaper ??

    • European bananas are sourced from the Caribbean and other places with low costs. Imports are not allowed here due to disease concerns. You can debate whether the concerns are justified but that's just ths way it is now.

Bought Sugar/lady finger Bananas for 1.99 on friday on the side of the road (not far from OZ Zoo)

Good price. Pity that there are only two main varieties of bananas in Australia. Anybody who has lived in SEA knows that there are other tasty varieties. Problem is that they don't transport well.

  • …when i have been to farmers markets they (stallholders) reckon the cows have a good diet of bananas when prices get too low.
also saw on TV someone growing very healthy Bananas in TAS and Perth WA.
