  • What kind of name is that??

    • um all their bags have funny names - thats kind of their thing. I quite like the naming scheme because instead of giving numbers I still know what size it is. (moderate = small , considerable embarrassment = medium, dreadful embarrassment = large.)

  • eh? $90m for a bag? How is that supposed to be a bargain? Looks a bog-ordinary satchel to me, like my daddy had aeons ago.
Except this one is plastic. Whoopety-do! Please explain.

    • Crumpler is an Australian company who make good durable and completely waterproof bags + it is a fashion statement i.e. you are also paying extra for the brand

      • "an Australian company who make bags" ?! I find that very hard to believe.
Do you mean "import bags from China/Vietnam"?

Reminds me of that bumbling, uptight Pommy actor that made all those chick flicks. Hugh someone…Anyway, dont care.
The day you catch me paying $90 for a nylon satchel and going around pleased that it's called Moderate Embarrassment, is the day I switch teams and cruise Commercial rd.
I presume they actually want to sell them to regular people.
Very silly name for a satchel.

  • A lot of you bitch about paying so much for a bag, but I don't think Crumpler or Crumpler wearers care. They made innovative courier bags for cyclist and bike couriers in the early day. An Australian company with stores worldwide still churning out good products. They've obviously found a good market and doing something right.

yes they make their bags freddy. So what if they are made overseas, they still put in the R&D to make these bags. You sound like a grumpy old man.

OK, I'll bite. What innovations have they brought to the plastic satchel market?
Not so much grumpy as cynical holier-than-thou smugness :-)
You were talking about Cree on the other thread. Now there is a real innovator.

I presume they want to sell them to people who can actually understand quality.
Even when most of the things we use these days are made in China, they have variety of quality controls there.

Eight years ago, I bought an expensive keyboard from Beijing, made in China, Chinese brand, Chinese QA. It still works, the comfort and build quality (materials used, etc.) outlast any expensive Logitech keyboard I've ever purchased. I believe their keyboards are made in China with supposedly Swiss QA. Where it's made is a no issue. How it is made is.

I use bags, a lot, and I tend to put them to the limits.
Cheap ones, expensive ones. In some cases, you do get what you pay for.
Booq, Crumpler, STM, Axio… they're all pretty expensive bag. They're all pretty good. It's just that I found Crumpler is the toughest one of them all. Waterproof, strong stitching, tough materials, nicely designed compartments, detachable with strong velcro, detachable waist strap, etc.
They put padding in places where it matters, reducing strain when you're carrying a lot of weight.
A lot of these things are not something you will immediately realise when you go to the shop and try to compare. Carry 2 heavy laptops, graphics tablets, portable hard disk, some books, change of clothing for couple of days, some other tools and try to stuff them up into one bag on a regular basis then you'll start noticing why it's worth the money.

If you're not into good quality bags, suit yourself. You may not need it. You may be satisfied with $8 Rivers bag we had in OzBargain. Hell I bought 2 of them as well. However, some people do need something more than that.
And $90 for a bag of that niche is a bargain.

    • Fair enough. I agree about the varying quality of the Chinese products. I hear the same factory will
make goods to whatever quality you want to pay for. And I'm sure your $8 bag is polyester, not nylon.
Still … ninety bucks for a satchel that's not leather seems a bit much. I'd be very interested
to know what they pay the manufacturer.

      • their original bag "barney rustle blanket" was the same $150 price when it came out 10 years ago, they've managed to keep it the same price by balancing out the discount on more volume with the inflation rate. The material has stayed exactly the same.
Actually to be honest I think they have changed the strap material, however some people like the new one cause its tougher but doesnt like to bend like the old one.

oh and one last thing is that crumpler never have sales, the most they ever have off is 10%. A sign of quality is that you never negotiate on price because you know the product will sell itself.

      • You know freddy, I'd like to as well.
Even though they're of good quality, I do still agree with you in the sense that they're still expensive. Considering that they're expanding without much problem, I'm assuming they got quite a bit of profit going on there.
Unfortunately the bags of that niche is well around $200 range. Even if they paid peanuts for the production, nobody would really lower their price down, not even the competitors.
The only one I ever saw trying to do that was Logitech. Their laptop bag looks pretty cool, but it didn't feel as rugged.

    • exactly - reminds me of the high quality bags that caribee used to make - bought the same one 7 years later and the material has all changed - new one didnt even last 2 years. that old one was still strong after 7. Some lucky barstard stole that bag.

crumpler makes bags just like they do when they were made in melbourne.
its also free lifetime repairs I think with their bags - just take it instore and they'll fix it for you. (they might charge for materials, not exactly sure as I've never had one break).

these bags are expensive but you'll never worry about it breaking on you, just worry that you'll get it stolen.

    • Cheap ones, expensive ones. In some cases, you do get what you pay for.
Booq, Crumpler, STM, Axio… they’re all pretty expensive bag.

Up until recently I never understood the point of an expensive bag. But when I started at my new job I bought a Booq laptop (http://www.donesold.com.au/2007/11/15/protect-your-laptop-in…) for around $200 (on special).

I'll never go back. The comfort and build quality is amazing. (Note my frame of reference is not super-cheap bags either - most of my previous bags have been TechEd freebies - http://www.frenchfamily.org/hunter/?p=120 ).

I don't have experience with Crumpler specifically, just pointing out in some instances that more expensive can be better value when purchasing a bag.

  • You get what you pay for I guess.

  • Well, perceived value due to a price history or retail niche and common sense are quite different things.

I spent a few years in Japan and, at the time, every mid-twenties girls just 'had' to have a Louis Vuitton bag. It became a virtual keeping-up-with-the-Jones' situation.
Girls were buying larger and larger bags to out do each other, as time went on. Got to the point you'd see these tiny girls dragging enormous oversized Louis Vuitton tote bags that you fit half a house into. The damned things cost from 'just a few hundred' to multiple thousands of dollars!

They are made from goddamn vinyl with a little leather trim!!! Ie the same as my crappy Adidas bag from the 80s.

Best group con-job in the world, that Louis Vuitton…

  • I have to say that there are certain "communities" who are more brand conscious than others… Or maybe, some people just don't cave in to peer/social pressure….

I go for branded/luxury items that are of good quality… But I usually buy them if the pricing is good. Obviously better, if they are on sale :)Unless there is something that I find irresistible!

Call me silly if you wish. But I bought my Crumple bag at full price… I don't regret it as it has served me well throughout the years.

It's true that the Crunpler bags do not really go on sale. I think this is a bargain if someone was in the market for one.

Look at the Crumpler logo and start observing. You will actually find many people using it :)

  • Hmm it's just a bag guys. I prefer a plastic shopping bag.

Yes, try taking plastic shopping bags carrying your laptop and documents to school. Platic bags are great for when riding a bike too!
