These articles talk of how Apple has quietly increased the warranty it offers on its products to 2 years. I know there was a statutory warranty Apple was forced to honour but this will surely make the process of getting warranty service less of a fight.

Really bad journalism here.
Lets say you are in the market for a TV so after looking around on company X's website x.example/enviromentreports/iphone/thetvmodelname/seewhatIdidthere/ you see predictions and in the uber fine grey-on-grey print "power consumption projections assume a 3 year lifespan…."
Now aside from the fact that "journalist" Y thinks it should be 2 years. I put that it would be reasonable to expect an iph—- company X's TV to last 3 years given they think it should. (It says so right in their report)
An expensive enameled cast iron pan should last at least 25 years, I have one that is still in near new condition and is 49 years old (used daily).
Back-to-back aircon 10ish years.
Smoke alarm 10 years (depending on model)
Water filter for coffee machine ~2 months.
I could go on and on.. but saying 2 years for everything is crap.
FYI though: Apple has so far has always honoured the consumer guarantee for me.
