Nikon AF-S 50mm f/1.8g for $208.95 Delivered @ Harvey Norman (Not Available In-Store)

100
Welcome5

Friend was looking for one of these today and we found this.
It's online order only, for $208 + 5.95 delivery to metropolitan areas. -$5 with the Welcome5 coupon
It's being sold below cost. No B&M store will pricematch this unfortunately. (We tried)

It's cheaper than any grey import.

I'm not sure how good the lens itself is, but I'm sure someone will chime in their opinion on the lens.

Nice price for Aussie stock (remember to register @ mynikonlife.com.au for 2yrs warranty), Kogan's 'grey' variant is $209 but their shipping is more expensive

    http://www.kogan.com/au/buy/nikon-af-s-50mm-standard-lens/?g…

best price I can find is CameraParadise (Grey, and not a vendor I have used before)

    http://cameraparadise.com/Nikon-AF-S-Nikkor-50mm-F/1.8-G-Len…

  • cameraparadise is a legit company and its reputation is ok.

$208.95 is not a good price. i dont mind grey import at all. all my lens including 70-200 are grey imported except 24-70 (very good price from jb hifi + reclaim gst at airport).

    • Actually, if you look at grey import, the cheapest is $212. This is cheaper than grey. If you can find otherwise, i'll remove it from my description

      • Yep just realised their (CameraParadise) shipping is so expensive, that is crazy!

    • cameraparadise is coming up with $67.13 shipping, which makes it more expensive than harvey norman. (I'm not chosing a desitnation, it's automatically calculating the shipping)

      • yes i know. it is why i didnt comment on cameraparadise's price either. i wonder if some lucky one have a holiday in HK or mainland CN, they can may find really good prices there (dont need to pay expensive express shipping fee).

  • Welcome5 is not working for me, any advice?

    • Same. Is it expired?

      • So price should be $213.95, instead of $208.95. Still good price.

    • It worked for me, try all lowercase "welcome5".

  • a good and entertaining review if anyones interested.

    • Also, detailed specs here, http://kenrockwell.com/nikon/50mm-f18-g.htm . In summary, this lens works on all Nikon cameras including the entry level ones.

      • this lens will won't work on older film cameras (no manual control of aperture), but for modern cameras it is no problem. It will work on all Nikon DSLRs

        • You're right, (and I can't edit my comment). It works on all Nikon DSLRs including the cheap entry level ones that don't have a focus motor and the larger full frame models.

        • isnt it very obvious that it will work on full frame models?

it is a lens designed for full frame models.

  • Can I use this with my Pentax Q?

    • +1

Sure, if you manage to find an adaptor?
You'd have better luck getting a non-oem q to k mount adapter and putting a pentax 50mm on

      • So with 50mm on Q, I can have a 275mm f1.8 lens?

        • Theoritocally, yes. And manual focus.

Just like my 135mm will become 740mm.

Again, good luck finding the adapter.

Also, dont count on the 1.8 making buttery smooth bokeh. The Q's sensor is too small for good bokeh…

        • Theoretically it stays 50mm, only FOV changes.

  • any adapter for cannon?

    • Isnt the Canon nifty 50 cheaper than this anyway?

      • This isn't a Canon lens. This lens is quieter and faster to focus than the nifty fifty. There is another nifty fifty Nikon equivalent the 50mm F1.8D.

        • i have the 1.8D, a good toy.

  • This might not be wide enough for those indoor shots of family and friends.
In a small to medium sized room you may struggle to get them in the frame

    • Unless youre shooting FF. the 50mm is designed for APS crop sensors. It'll be approx 75mm on 4 digit nikon models, great for portraits.

      • 50mm lens will be 50mm on all formats. The perspective and characteristics do not change. The only thing that changes is the FOV, i.e. how wide the viewing angle is.

        • s/he means that a 50mm lens on a cropped frame is equivalent to a 75mm on a full frame.

        • zealmax is correct. The perspective and characteristics remain the same. Basically, the shape of a person's face is still shaped like a 50mm, not like a 75mm (which starts to reach the sweet spot for portrait photography).

It "may" look like a 75mm on the surface, but the perspective is still 50mm.

The photo on a cropped sensor is like 50mm on a full frame with quite a fair bit of outer portion cropped out, rather than a full image on a full frame with a 75mm lens.

      • 50mm on cropped frames is not versatile.

        • Agree, I had a 50mm 1.4 on my D90 and it was annoying a lot of the time.

I have just ordered a D600, but if I still had a DX SLR, I would much prefer the 35mm 1.8.

  • Great price, just keep in mind that on a crop sensor, the Nikon 35mm 1.8G might suit you better depending on your purpose. Picked one up yesterday after much research and very happy with it.

Alright, I just bought 3 from hong kong for my friends , 120aud each…….

  • A little off topic, but what is the best deal for the 50mm 1.4 people have seen around?

  • Welcome5 worked for me. Just ordered for $208.95
