  • how does this compare to free software like documents to go and kingsoft office?

    • +3

      Documents to GO isn't free.

Kingsoft didn't play nice with Swiftkey when I had it. The word prediction breaks when you try to type a document in Kingsoft.

So far Officesuite seems to be the most stable, renders documents the most accurate (i.e. keeps the formatting) and runs reasonably well on single core CPU's. But it still requires you to pay money to install a font pack (which is required to view or use certain fonts) but this is entirely optional.

If you only need a document viewer not an editor, I suggest Polaris office.

Why you would ever be typing a real document on a touch pad (except for fun and games) is beyond me…

you could always connect an external keyboard if you mostly use tablets for leisure but uses it for light word processing from time to time

i've seen someone who carries around a keyboard dock for their phone and whips it out to take notes from time to time. didn't help his personal image but i guess it's got its practical appeals

      • Good point

      • oops. Was going to +ve but clicked -ve. facepalm

      • I use a tablet case with a KB inbuilt when i take mine to uni - so much lighter than the lappy when i dont need all the kick. Father in law uses his BT KB with both his phone and Ramos w30.
        This is mighty temptin

      • Tycho from Penny Arcade wrote something on this just recently. His take is, he can write stuff just fine on a tablet (with a bluetooth keyboard), But editing on a tablet, at least for him, was "a concentrated NO".

So yeah, ymmv but don't expect to get too serious.

The ASUS Transformer Infinity with keyboard dock is no different from a laptop for me really.
I rarely use my PC for anything other than gaming these days.

      • or the new hp envy

    • I just bought dock for the TF101 (had it since it came out) so the missus can take it to uni. Combined the weight is 1kg where as her laptop weights over 2kg and don't really see the need in buying an ultrabook right at the moment.

So for her it'll come in very handy to type lecture notes.

    • I have an ASUS transformer tablet and it is like a netbook when attached to the keyboard dock, great for taking notes at uni lectures although I just write them using Google Drive so its all synced to the cloud I do use OfficeSuite Pro (got it from the 10cents play store sale) to look at the lecture slides (powerpoint format) and just task switch between it and Google Drive. Pretty handy.

  • Awesome, thanks.

  • Got this for free on amazon, but still a good deal. I don't understand either why you wouldn't use a real keyboard with this app, but each to their own. :)

Most people just want to be able to read documents on the go. I see very few who would actually use a tablet to edit large or complex documents.

Try loading up a 45 page Word doc (full of graphics, tables and charts) on your dual core 1GB RAM tablet — it really starts lagging and even the words you type take about a second to show on the page.

    Any better than polaris ?

  • showing up as 2.87 in your link?
OfficeSuite Pro 7 (PDF & HD)

Shows up as AU$2.87 (Australian Dollars) whereas the title/description is USD$2.99 (US Dollars). It's just an exchange rate difference.

  • I recently bought a Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 (using the combined HN e-waste and Samsung cashback deal)but it won't be operational until next week when I give it to hubby for his birthday. Never having had anything Android before, I have no experience of shopping at the Play Store. Will I be able to buy OfficeSuite now but pick it up later, as it were? Thanks in advance for any advice.

    • Yes…but it would be advisable to use his Google account….unless you can convince him to use your Google account on the tablet. The software is linked to the Google account that it is purchased from….

      • Right… so I'll need to set him up with a Google account of his own first. (I swear he must be the only person on this planet who has electricity but no Google account!)

And I suppose I had better use his name again to activate the Telstra prepaid starter pack I have here so that I can use (some/all?) of the $30 credit to buy this and other apps at the Play Store in his name/Google account name too?

Thanks for responding to what must seem like really dumb questions, but 'apps' and tablets are new to us. My first computer was a TRS-80 that ran programs downloaded from the radio to cassette tapes, and I haven't really progressed much since. Thinking about it, the radio that beeped out the software was mobile. Or portable anyway. So its all kind of gone reversed.

        • basically yes, dont think the google account and telstra account need the same name but they do need to be "linked" if you want to use your telstra credit on the tablet.

Also, you have to use the tablet to make the purchase apparantly if you want to use your telstra credit, otherwise you can just log into the playstore and use your credit card with his newly created google account…

          i had a TRS-80. It was good.

        • If you have to use the tablet to make the purchase, does it have to have the Telstra sim in it at the time? The tablet will be running on a Woolie's Optus sim and I was hoping that I could make the purchase on the desktop pc and just provide the Play Store with the Telstra account name/number to use the credit, and then download the app later to the tablet via Optus. This is fast approaching the "too hard" basket and I might just have to let Google know my credit card details.

        • you can buy from the play store online with a CC or a telstra account - yes, if you want to buy with the telstra credit, according to the telstra site, the device your purchasing with has to have the sim in it…
EG if i bring up an app on my phone i can buy with my telstra credit, if i buy it from my PC only CC is an option to pay with.
