  • how much is it normally ?

    • its not normally free delivery afaik

      • +1

why are you paying GST if it is coming from the UK ?

        • +1

And why isn't showing the GST inc price?

        • +2

i believe it's the AU site and perhaps the shipment is also coming from Sydney warehouse. not entirely sure.

        • +1

Pretty sure it's illegal to display retail prices ex GST

        • You could go to their UK site direct but suspect the post would kill any savings - http://uk.farnell.com/raspberry-pi/rpi-b-512-cased/sbc-raspb…

        • +4

I'd like to see a reference to that.

I think the logic is that companies like Element 14 mostly deal with businesses/ trade who can generally claim their GST expense back so when buying goods the GST component isn't as much of a consideration to them.

        • It's deceptive advertising

          http://www.fairtrading.nsw.gov.au/Businesses/Advertising_and…

          http://transition.accc.gov.au/content/item.phtml?itemId=7014…

          GST-inclusive pricing means that
a displayed price includes the GST. Prices should not be shown as excluding GST. Advertisements,
price lists, or quotes that specify prices without referring to any extra mandatory amounts payable, such as the GST, risk contravening the Act

        • +1

there are exceptions to the trade practices act which allows companies to quote GST exclusive prices. Two of these apply to element14.

          1. The obligation to quote all inclusive prices does not apply where the relevant representation is made exclusively to corporations.

          2. Products not suitable for personal, domestic or household use. The obligation to quote all inclusive prices applies only to goods or services that are of a kind ‘ordinarily acquired for personal, domestic or household use or consumption’.

        • ^ This

Sites like Element14 are aimed at dealing with companies and all of our pricing is dealt with as ex-GST when ordering goods.

        • Element14 definitely have an Australian presence -

          Their ABN is 95 003 211 345

          http://abr.business.gov.au/SearchByAbn.aspx?SearchText=95+00…

Previous trading name according to -

          https://connectonline.asic.gov.au/RegistrySearch/faces/adf.t…

          is -

          FARNELL ELECTRONIC COMPONENTS PTY LIMITED

That name Farnell ties in with the name at the top right of the website -

          'A Premier Farnell Company'

And they have an Australian 1300 number at the top of their screen also. Personally, I think they should be mentioning on the product page that the price is GST-free, like some IT resellers do…

        • not sure about the gst thing

        • +2

The person who has posted the deal has included GST, I really don't see what the big deal is!

        • +1

Business to business can display prices ex GST, but business to consumer cannot.

If you go on the website, search for raspberry pi, and then click on the links, it takes you to that website. If you are a consumer, they show you the price for consumers which includes GST.

Just because someone posts a direct link to the business listing doesn't make it illegal.

Also note: the consumer site has a minimum of $75 for free shipping. I have no issues ordering from the regular site, but I have an ABN, and I actually purchase electronic components (which is their main business…)

          From their T&Cs page: http://au.element14.com/jsp/bespoke/bespoke3.jsp?bespokepage…

The Company is predominantly a business to business supplier. This Catalogue and any specialogues and other product brochures produced by the Company are intended for use by business customers and not consumers (except for students purchasing for use in their studies or research at an educational institution at which the Supplies were promoted). By ordering, the Customer confirms that he, she or it wishes to obtain the Supplies:
          (a) for the purposes of his, her or its business and not as a consumer, and wishes to obtain the Supplies:
          (i) for the purpose of re-supply; or
(ii) for the purpose of using them up or transforming them, in trade or commerce, in the course of a process of production or manufacture, or in the course of repairing or treating other goods or fixtures on land, or
          (b) for use in the course of studies or research at an educational institution at which the Supplies were promoted.

          1. PRICES AND GST
Prices stated in the Catalogue for Supplies are in Australian dollars, exclusive of GST or other duties or taxes and any applicable transport and handling charges, which will be added at the time of despatch. The Company has used all reasonable endeavours to ensure that prices for the Supplies are accurately set out in the Catalogue but these prices are not binding and the Company reserves the right to change its prices without notice at any time. Prices charged will be those prevailing when an order is accepted. Where Supplies are to be made in instalments (‘Scheduled Delivery’) the price payable for them will be that applicable at the time of despatch of the first batch of Supplies but, where Scheduled Delivery may continue for a period of 90 days or more, the Company reserves the right to charge the Customer further amounts if the price of the Supplies increases before the end of that period.

The Company will issue a tax invoice to the Customer in relation to any supply that is subject to GST.

The amount of GST payable will be calculated by multiplying the sum of the price for the supplies plus any additional freight or other charges by the rate of GST applicable at the time of the supply. The words "supply" and "tax invoice" in this Condition 3 have the same meaning as that given to them in the A New Tax System (Goods and Services Tax) Act 1999 (Cth).

It was free shipping with element14 when I bought it. Raspberry PI is $38.

This one with case is fine for $50. The case is handy and will cost $15-$20 if buy separately.

        • Free shipping threshold is now $45ex, so buying it cased means you get it shipped for nix! :)

The cased ones are also the UK manufactured units…the discrete ones were Chinese manufacture when I ordered…the latter were a bit sketchy by all reports, so this way you guarantee yourself the better board! ;)

  • Why should one buy this instead of android usb stick?

    • +18

possibilities are endless with this, you can make all sorts of things out of raspberry pi. it even has the XBMC app called Raspbmc with 1080p out capability.

home automatiom, personal web server, etc
      http://pingbin.com/2012/12/30-cool-ideas-raspberry-pi-projec…

android usb stick just upgrades your TV.

Apparently you can also install android OS into raspberry pi - http://www.raspberrypi.org/archives/1700

      • +2

The biggest problem with XBMC on rasberry pi is that there is no DTS decoding licenced in the pi and DTS haven't come to the party yet.

If you are going to a home theater receiver or TV that supports DTS decoding then you can just set it to passthrough.

If your TV on the other end doesn't support DTS then you are out of luck.

    • +19

If you're asking the question you should buy an Android stick.

      • +1

I like these both. I can see why people would buy those android sticks. As far as I know these devices are mainly for tinkerers or people who like small do-it-yourself projects and learning about IT. There is no better way to learn about how things work AFAIK.

    • If you can code in Unix, you could potentially make all sorts of kit out of this. But for most people they simply use it for xmbc.

I will probably just wait for the ouya, myself.

      • If you can code in Unix…

        Python, actually.

  • Nice to see somebody is paying attention to the forums! ;)

    http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/96624

    • I've never thought of using one of those HP-NL40 things as a HTPC before! Why did I not think of this?!!!

      • I do. It's good.

  • +2

I found when I bought my pi, if I said I was a business than free shipping was at 45, else if I was a individual free shipping was at $50-60, also the pi was cheaper to begin with.
and they never checked that I was a business.

  • +1

Same price as always, not a bargain.

  • Looking to get one of these as a media player. Any other alternative choices I should also take into consideration?

    • Any of the Android USB sticks are probably more powerful and more compact.

      • +1

The Pi has an ethernet port, which is important if you prefer to go wired for media streaming, though an ODROID U2 also does. And as others have said, DTS is a problem on the Pi.

  • +5

Elemen14's metro delivery is very fast. I ordered a Pi from them in January (same deal as this) and it arrived at my office in Sydney the next day.

  • this post was the nudge i needed to pull the trigger

    ordered

  • How's Pi compared to Android stick? (mk808, mx1, etc..)

    • -1

The Pi has a very slow CPU but a decent GPU.

The Pi can't play all 1080p videos, like my Game of Thrones 1080p, it stutters.

      • It can play 1080p only at 30fps. Probably your video is more than 30fps.

        • +1

Err no thats silly Game of Thrones is not more then 30fps.

It can't handle high quality 1080p videos like Game of Thrones (4.5GB episodes)

Especially as they are DTS not AC3.

        • Then video alone shouldn't be affected as it can handle it, but yes, high def audio along with 1080p is hard to handle. Solution is, disable true hd audio from settings and you'll be fine.

        • Where are the true hd settings in xbmc?

I don't think what you are suggesting exists….

Most high quality content is DTS only, there really isn't much you can change about it to make it decode DTS faster.

        • +3

See the comment above re DTS decoding. Basically, if you have a DTS-capable audio system, the Pi will pass the audio through and the audio system will do the work. Otherwise, the Pi has to do the decoding in software which will lead to the stuttering that you have observed.

        • +1

Ok and there you go… the Pi can't do it and there's nothing you can do about it without a DTS capable system.

I love my Pi, but I'm just pointing out this issue so people don't think its the greatest media device because its not.

        • +2

It is worth noting that the Pi is physically capable of decoding DTS, the issue has always been DTS Inc licencing…which I believe the Foundation is working on even as we speak!

That said, the dev community is also working on DTS patches at various stages of development for several distros; it's well worth a google if you're interested! :)

        • the dev community is also working on DTS patches

ahh that i did not know.

do you have any idea if the same goes for the mpeg2 codecs that you currently have to purchase separately to get them to play? ive tried googling but the state of google/the fake dmca takedowns i never know if im just missing something.

        • +1

AFAIK, as with VC1, because the licence deal with the MPEG has been concluded, nobody is working on patches for those anymore.

The main reason for the push for a DTS workaround of some sort is that DTS Inc are being somewhat recalcitrant in negotiating a licence deal with the R Pi Foundation!

    • If you just want to watch movies or play games Android stick is powerful enough to handle all the tasks. If you want to play around Linux system like Ubuntu then Pi is the way to go. Android stick has more powerful CPU, more Ram but having GPU driver issue with popular Linux OS.

    • alright, cheers guys!

  • Can you get it in a colour other than clear acrylic?

  • If you are not in a rush to receive it, you can get it from the UK cheaper :
    http://raspberrypi.rsdelivers.com/

They have them for GBP 21.60 + 3.99 for case + 4.95 for shipping.
Looks like a couple of weeks turnaround time though.

At current exchange rate, works out around $45 and you get a choice of case colour.

The accessories look pretty cheap here too.

    • RS are truly horrible to deal with and SLOW delivery. Only way to their attention is to whinge on their twitter.

Element14 are MUCH better, fast delivery. Highly recommend.

      • +1

Agreed. I had my Pi in under 24hrs from E14, no kidding.

  • I have been looking for this kind of device for a while, i dont think this could play 1080p smoothly. Any recommendation for android stick?

    • +1

      mine plays 1080p quite alright

      • it plays most 1080p content, just not all.

        • Let's not forget, playback is also mediated by the runtime environment. My other XBMC (Win or Linux) boxes have had difficulty at times with certain files…as have my standalone media players!

If we're discussing the hardware's ability to decode a 1080p video using a supported codec, the fact is that the GPU is indeed capable of performing this function; known issues with DTS audio bitstreams notwithstanding! ;)

        • The stuttering is from the lack of CPU though.

GPU acceleration still requires a lot of CPU when you compare it to how powerful the CPU is.

        • +1

The stuttering is from the lack of CPU though.

Incorrect. You should know by now that is only half of the story.

The stuttering only occurs on high bitrate files with DTS audio tracks for the reasons already outlined here. The issue does not occurr with other (supported) audio codecs, AAC for instance. Contrary to popular belief, DTS is not the only audio encoding scheme in current use!

I use passthru audio (to my Pioneer AVR) on my Pi, I have nil stuttering with any 1080p file. Frankly Sam, I surprised to find out that after all these years & bargains you do not have a DTS capable receiver/HT setup…upgrade time mayhaps??? ;)

        • If you are downloading 1080p it should be DTS…

I actually use a custom built media PC with 10TB of storage connected to my TV.

I use my Pi for other tasks as its really only suitable for a basic media pc.

        • If you are downloading 1080p it should be DTS…

Why? It's good but it's not the be-all & end-all…if you're just playing it back thru your TV speakers then it's a bit of a waste, isn't it?

As I said, I'm in a position where it doesn't matter to me, so yes I grab DTS if it's available…but if you're downloading for playback on any device that doesn't either do DTS passthru or decoding/downsampling then commonsense should tell you to select one of the myriad other audio options instead!

  • If the speeds are not up to your requirements, there's always the option of overclocking.

    • +1

Overclocking rarely helps unless it can already do what you want 90% of the way. overclocking will help you get to 100% for a smooth/stable experience.

  • Do you guys reckon that I could use the raspberry pi to open a network monitoring web page (opmanager running on another server)?

    • should be fine…. it's running a version of linux…. from a shell just type "$ sudo apt-get install chromium-browser" (or supported browser of choice) and go for it.

      • Thanks! Man, I hate linux. BAAAAD experiences with it. Alright.. that aside, any idea if this is the best option for what I'm doing?

        • +2

heh… it's a lot more stable than it used to be way back when…. and I've had issues with windows…. and osx…. and… well, nothing's perfect! As for is it the best option for you, well that's hard to say. You could use an arduino to hook up to a display that would use way less power - but would be a lot more complicated to do. If all you want to do is show a web page (displaying network status info etc) on a TV screen, then this would be hard to beat as far as overall cost is concerned.

        • nevermind

  • Can these mount and play bluray iso's yet? Till such a time, I won't rush to buy one.

  • +4

I have one of these and they are great. I got it cheaper than the above but….

Last month I could buy a case and board seperate (very easy to fit inside and put together) and now they package it for a higher price? Sorry but I don't see the bargain in it. It was here last month http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/93110 this one seems to have put its price up on a packaged deal and we are calling it a deal. Well sorry no deal from me.

  • +1

So I got Raspberry a few weeks back to tinker with and hook up with arduino etc… not to be! It has pretty much taken over as my media box of choice at the moment. I like the versatility of having different OS on different mem cards, but Raspbmc is getting most of the time on the unit. I liked open elec but it was slower than raspbmc which for me runs quite smoothly. I have also discovered online streams repos etc and it is awesome! I didnt realise how much good stuff was out there till I started (patiently) exploring repositories.

    • +1

I liked open elec but it was slower than raspbmc

orly. i found it completely the other way around. i have openelec on an old slow 2gb sd card and it runs everything just fine, i had to use my sandisk ultra (30mb/s iirc) for raspbmc to run smoothly.

were you using the same card/class for both of yours? might be time to pull out yet another spare card and give raspbmc a shot again. ditto on loving being able to use multi cards for different OS's and a couple of 2tb usb drives hanging off it with media on them :)

      • Yes I found it was maxing my cpu in OpenELEC with a movie sometimes not able to pull the fps needed (HD movie). In Raspbmc i am finding the cpu isnt copping anywhere near as much stick. Playing the same movie a lot smoother. The cpu indicator is around 10% to 30%when playing non HD content. I only have plain sound on as my telly is only a 2.0

And yes identical SD card Transcend 4Gig class 4. Maybe it was the latest updates that have sorted something out.
I did a network install and expanded the install to use full card. It has since done a version upgrade afer a week or so when new version came out.

One annoying thing I am seeing is a bit of screen flicker(very minor like a slight shadow and frequency like a hard drive light) when the unit is first trying to access something over the network.Maybe I have a power issue.

        • i think my old 2gb card is a class 4 as well and struggled with raspbmc, i did read the other day something about the resolution of the os being different to xbmc can cause 100% cpu so i wonder if its something like that causing both our issues (mine with raspbmc and yours with openelec)…. definitely time to have another play on an identical 2gb card i have laying around :)

after decades of only using micro$oft junk ive only just started using linux so its been a steep learning curve

  • -6

I agree with most. It use to be $37 with free delivery now they put a case on it with min $50 delivery.

    No deal.

    • +3

Where can you get the same deal cheaper???

      • -6

it is so annoying hearing people say where can you get it cheaper for this item, there are only 2 places in Australia you can buy it from and only 1 has it in stock. Fact is that they were selling it cheaper before, hiked the price, probably because they are the only ones you can buy it from here and then we get a post for a deal on it - go figure.

        • +3

Simply because an item WAS on sale ONCE does not automatically mean that a later deal is necessarily a ripoff.

FFS, Moots was once GIVING AWAY USB OTG cables, by your logic as soon as he then started charging anything for them it became a rort. Gimme a break guys!

        • If an item was a particular price at one time - I would be very disappointing if I couldn't get it for that price again.

        • well if you are willing to wait 2 weeks,

        • -1

mods on ozbargain are close relatives of the nazi regime

        • +1

Can't blame the mods for that, >5 negs & the vote is revoked automagically IIRC….dat's da community opressing you colaman! ;)

        • +1

ahh well, At least I take pleasure in knowing that I contribute to removing other peoples negs in others posts. Not fully fair, but then if that's the way it is, I can't argue :)

    • +3

It was $36 ex GST plus $8.90 ex GST for the case
So that brings it up to 44.90 exgst
      With GST the deal was—>49.39
So that actually makes it $0.88 more expensive.
The package deal was up last time but was out of stock and was cheaper than now… obviously there is price flactualtion in importing aus dollar etc… I think its safe to say element 14 arent exactly price gouging…

      • I think its safe to say element 14 arent exactly price gouging…

id be a little careful about saying that about farnells (what they used to be called)… while they used to always have everything in stock back in the old days they used to be anywhere up to 10 times more expensive on all items. its probably the reason for the change of name when they changed there business model?

  • Thought I might buy one to tinker with.

Getting "An error occurred while calculating the tax" after completing the delivery details page.

  • +1

But, what does it all mean Basil?

    • It's a bit nutty…

  • +1

Bloody hell, that was insanely quick! Ordered Friday arvo and arrived first thing this morning!

  • The fact that the hardware is by current standards slow and it costs $50 instead of the expected $25 I don't see why anyone would buy a RPI when they could get a Ouya for slightly more (keeping in mind you need a HID and PSU for the RPI adding $20-30)

    • +5

I can think of one reason - Ouya doesn't exist!
