LG 50" (127cm) Full HD Plasma TV - QLD Only - in Store - $493

140

Hey OzBargainers,

Saw this deal on TV earlier today and thought I might post it up. Not the best TV in the world, but $493 for a 50" Full HD TV seems decent to me. Comparable to the Changhong 50" deal, though that's an LED TV while this is a Plasma TV. Might be good enough for the kids or something.

Lowest price I've seen on the web here:

Hey mate just amend the title to include the price.

  • It is $5 cheaper than this I guess. http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/95442

    • It's back to $578 at The Good Guys.

    • Around Dec 2011 I bought an LG 42" plasma HD (not full hd) and love it. I imagine this one is bigger and better.

EDIT: mine has one USB port which plays most divx avis and all mpegs. Several HDMI. TOSLINK Optical audio out only.

  • TV price really dropping fast.

Hope to see Full HD 60" below 800 soon.

''Might be good for the kids'', I bet it would be.

  • Decent bargain for RT Edwards, most of their stuff is wayyy overpriced.

Agreed that it is a good price. However, I think it would be a good idea to consider the power usage of a plasma vs LCD vs LED. Over the course of a year (and even more so over five or ten) the power bills may negate any perceived savings on the initial purchase, especially considering the electricity price hikes which will hit soon. My friend's 55" LED uses less power than my 40"LCD which is less than 3 yrs old. And generally plasma technology is the most power hungry. Maybe include power usage rating for TVs in future?

If you're worried about a $30-$50 difference in your power bill per year, then you shouldn't be buying a $500 TV in the first place.

The biggest turn off (and only one in my books) is that you need a much darker environment to truly enjoy a plasma vs a LCD.

Actually, having owned a number of each type, we find plasma far and away the best in well lit rooms. Particularly if there are light sources (like windows) behind or to the side of the viewer. They're also much better if there is a lot of movement, or sudden changes, in the images.

        • So wait, I always thought if you had light/glare on the screen it's makes it almost impossible to see the image? I always though LCD/LED Tv's had better/brighter back-light.

However, I think it would be a good idea to consider the power usage of a plasma vs LCD vs LED.

Same discussion in every plasma deal. Short story: its irrelevant.
