Want to take Kids to see Snow

Hi All

I'm really wanting to bring my kids to see snow this year. Don't really care where (Threadbo, perisher, mt buller, NZ) as long as it's cheap and convenient. Single father with a 6 and 4 year old, I don't want to travel 8 hours up a mountain or take 2-3 flights to get anywhere. Don't need any ski passes, don't need fancy accomodation. Please help.

Thanks

  • I think Newzealand would definately be worth a look especially as the aussie dollar buys around $1.24 nz at the moment.

  • In the same boat, single dad with a 7yo. Have been looking at NZ as well. Did the south island in a motorhome years ago and found the tourist park facilities to be awesome, quite a different concept to what we have here. Packages for airfare and motorhome hire out of Christchurch are well priced at the moment. Keeping in mind thats transport, accomodation, and cook your own food if you like , it works out really good. And when the complaints and demands begin you can just go elsewhere. Good luck with it.

What I did years ago (and we all thoroughly enjoyed ourselves tremendously; Nan (80s), son (10) and myself (single Mum), was book a day out with Mountain Top Experience to Mount Baw Baw; very reasonably priced. We met the 4WD vehicle (only takes max 8 I think) at Warragul station, and then it was all go. No waiting for chains, etc. (should have seen that queue of vehicles and buses getting fitted out!), by-passed that delay and straight to the top. Can hire equipment if needed; boots, etc. but seriously a good cheap pair of wellies will do the trick. I waterproofed a cheap pair of ughs for myself and Nan (we still have them), and hired my son the special boots. Kids do get very wet; no matter what they wear. Everything extremely close and handy, metres from a hot cuppa and food, which is a little on the dear side (ok; can take your own if you wish). Just try to get your kids away from that toboggan run so you can have a nice lunch. Ps. Take additional clothing, everything, especially for the kids. I bought water-proof pants (about $10 from Army Dispoals) and waterproof gloves (Aldi), so apart from their beanies and parkas there is not much to buy. They will have plenty of time to build a snowman, and you will all be thoroughly exhausted by leaving time, you certainly won't feel rushed. We were very lucky, although it was only 4C the Sun was out all day, and all that exercise on the toboggan keeps you warm. Nan enjoyed the jaunt out too.

  • Thanks for the advice

JediJan, Mt Baw Baw sounds like a fantastic idea. Thank you, I will take a serious look at it. Might spend a day in Melbourne too.
